New York Mets 2009-10 Winter report

Just about everyone I talk to likes Havens, especially his bat (careful saucy) :badgrin:what I like is his situational hitting; he has a real knack for elevevating the ball, and can be counted on to go up the middle. He has a wacked out stance like none I have ever seen, because of that pitchers often bust him inside.
His arm is decent but would be just adequate at short. But he for sure has the potential to be an excellent defensive second baseman.
In 2008, he earned third-team All-American honors and second team All SEC honors, unfortunately the year turned out to be a loss cause of too many injuries.
First came the elbow troubles and then leg problems did him in.

As for Davis, like I have said you are gonna love this kid.

Check him out

Thanks sonny for the update....maybe by September Reese is going to look like a real keeper,if he says healthy.Like I said, there's nothing wrong with being appreciative of both kinds of bats, btw!:p

Davis looks so good,so natural it's going to be fun to watch him develop and become a star.

Well no surprise to me The Mets have told JJ Putz they will not pick up his option for 2010. JJ was just never happy being the setup man for k-Rod, he said he was but I never believed him, he wants to be a closer. We were happy when he signed on and it looked great on paper, but it never really panned out. The option would have called for $9.1 million, and instead they will buy him out for $1 million. I am happy about this because as I said he was not a happy camper in that position and second it became just too much money to spend on him especially after that surgery. The Mets can now spend those bucks on something we really need like another starter or catcher. The only possibility left I suppose would be for him to the Mets on an incentive-laden deal.

I always liked Nick Evans and he sure has had his ups and downs, so I am happy to tell you is working hard and yesterday he got his first AFL homerun. Evans is 2-12 in the AFL with a double and a HR. He is playing LF but will prollly play some first as well.
Well,Putz wasn't as comfortable being a set up man for K-Rod and it probably is the best thing for all concerned the Mets won't pick up the option.Let JJ get the opportunity to find the best situation for himself, and free up very needed money in the process of improving the Mets next season.I don't know if he's interested in an incentive laden deal though because he has so many questions attached to him until he proves healthy and consistent he may well have no choice but to take one from wherever he does sign,Mets included.

The Mets especially though need all the extra cash to improve next season....they may spend a little more but will not drastically raise the payroll, thanks to that weasel Madoff.Whatever savings they can muster has to be used wisely to help the Mets move forward again....they owe that to their fans after the collapses of 2007 and 2008,and the dismal performance from this past season.

Sonny, though I've posted the new Hot Stove thread, and we'll touch upon Mets news there too...this is the place I'll be for in depth updates and analysis of all the Mets doings this winter.Always love what you bring here!..|

Carlos Delgado and Brian Schneider were the first two eligible Mets to file for Free Agency yesterday. Gary Sheffield, Fernando Tatis, Alex Cora, and Ramon Martinez are also expected to file Free Agency in the next few days. Figure on the Mets not standing in the way of these players either retiring or signing with other teams. Incumbent teams have until November 20th to resign their Free Agents exclusively. Other teams may contact them during this time, but no contracts can be signed until the current team either decides to re-sign or let them pursue other contracts.
It boils down to if the Mets offer salary arbitration to any of these three players, and if they decline it and sign with a new team, the Mets will be rewarded one additional draft pick for each player in the Sandwich Round, which occurs between the first and second round of the draft
I am expecting Alex Cora and Ramon Martinez to file any second now.

The Mets picked up Mike Pelfreys option for next season, although he will only get $500,000, which adds up to a $850,000 pay cut. Pelfrey's four-year, $5.25 million contract expired after the 2009 season and he is not eligible for arbitration until after next season

So the winter meetings have begun and like most Mets fans the outcome of theses meetings is very important to me. What will Omar do??
I have said before, my main concern is for a second starter, that has to be #1 then we need a catcher and one more power bat. That is my wish and hope that comes out of this.
In fact Minaya said the Mets will be very aggressive in the free-agent market this winter with the top priorities being a slugger for the middle of the lineup and more starting pitching. I am so on that same page.
Minaya also said there are few restrictions being placed on him regarding how much he can spend. Last year, the Mets' nearly $150 million payroll was second in baseball behind the Yankees, who spent $201 million.
Omar went on to say "If there's an opportunity we like, we're going to pursue that player," he said. "It's not that we have a set dollar figure, a set number."
I am not going to go into the whole Delagad/Murphy first base thing, I do not want Carlos back not even if they could get him for just one year, I want Murphy to be our first baseman.

In the lets get excited portion of our post I have to tell you that Omar will meet with Scott Boras tonight to at least gauge the price on Matt Holliday. Keep in mind this is the first meeting and there will be a lot of dancing and jerking but for sure no happy ending here just yet. Not sure the Mets want to spend the money on him but Omar seems to indicate that he has what ever money he needs so who knows. Same would apply to Jason Bay who would also come very expensive which may lead the Mets to pursue second-tier free agents.
Expect Omar to discuss Alex Cora with Boras as well; prolly want to resign him as backup middle infielder

I have heard about Veritek but now I hear he would exercise the option in his contract, keeping him on the Red Sox next season. Even though we need a catcher who can catch at least 100 games, can Varitek’s body can hold up to a regular grind? I am not interested in him. I would be much more interested in Bengie Molina and Rod Barajas. The Mets need to obtain a No. 1 catcher so that Josh Thole can open 2010 at Triple-A Buffalo, but the free-agent class does not offer all that much, it’s gotta be Molina or Barajas..

As much as I love Luis Castillo, I would not be surprised to see him gone as a way to create room to sign Orlando Hudson.

I should mention here that Gary Sheffield filed for free agency. So he is gone goodbye

I know you are probably tired of hearing me go on and on about Ike Davis, but I love this kid and he continues to make me proud. His swing as I have mentioned before is perfect and a joy to see (I actually told him that) ;)
Davis is raking at .348/.380/.636 in 16 games in the desert with seven doubles and four long balls

Want goosebumps check out this video

You actually SPOKE to Ike Davis?!!!:D

Never tired of your praising the kid...I'm a big Ike Davis fan,too(!)...as you know sonny!;)

Mets are reportedly talking to Scott Boras about Matt Holiday, and also interested in Jason Bay at least publicly but there also is talk the Mets aren't going to go all out for those players, and settle for a second tier player like Marlon Byrd of Texas or Jermaine Dye,cast off from Kansas City.

Well, adding a complimentary piece as the talk is will not cut it for Mets fans. This illusion that our guys are enough once they come back healthy bit us in the ass so many times last year.We still DON'T know what to expect from them....and must be aggressive on securing one or two top flight players to rejuvenate the ballclub.Whatever we get from Jose Reyes or Carlos Beltran is gravy then.Don't forget we need to hold the fort this year probably with Daniel Murphy for Ike at first,so we need another masher to ease the pressure of performing at a top level from the start once Ike arrives for 2011.

Scott Boras has reputedly said Matt Holliday isn't turned off at all by the thought of playing at a more pitcher friendly park like CitiField. If he loses some homers,he gains more doubles in the gaps....and I think that it's silly to think that home run totals for Matt or David Wright will necessarily remain low in that kind of park. They're strong enough to get their share and if they will not hit 40-50....20-30 still would be in reach.I think David got too psyched out by the park....maybe you really have to drive one to get it out early in the year but it didn't play that badly at all for opposing team homers and there will be times the ball carries well enough. We're not talking Comerica Park in Detroit here cavernous distances.

I got a Text from a very excited Cyclone player last night which said WE GOT WALLY!!
It looks like Wally Backman will be the new manager for my beloved Brooklyn Cyclones, there should be an announcement in a day or so. Hot damn!

The Mets bullpen area is undergoing a full renovation. The bullpens had been set up so that the Mets' bullpen was in front of the visiting bullpen, but this led to an obstructed view from the visiting bullpen, which the Padres and others had complained about. The renovation will put the bullpens are side by side on the field.
Soooo what will this do to the dimensions of the ‘Mo Zone’ area in right field…

Omar Minaya hopes to travel to Puerto Rico to see Carlos Delgado in Winter Ball next month.
So ok, I guess it won’t hurt to see what Carlos has left but I don’t want him back, I’ll stick with Murphy and eventually Davis.
Omar also said he expects Jeff Francoeur will return in 2010 and that he wouldn’t rule out a contract extension for Francoeur. Umm when was that even a question??

In the get him the fuck outta there department, On Tuesday, former Mets pitcher Victor Zambrano’s mother, was rescued in a commando-style raid after being kidnapped Sunday from her home at Victors farm in Aragua. She is one of several relatives of baseball players who have been kidnapped for ransom in Venezuela in recent years.
So then why the fuck are our guys including Josh Thole still there?
The Mets are consulting with Major League Baseball’s security department and intend to provide Thole, who plays for Leones de Caracas, with all the information to ensure his safety, whether he comes back or remains.
Minaya said “We’re doing our due diligence regarding the entire situation, and are looking into it to make sure Josh knows what’s going on and we know that he is safe.” Josh is scheduled to come home Dec 8th.
Fuck that, bring him home now!

I wanted to write some of my thoughts about the Mets players in the 2009 season. I will post a few players every day Please join in with your thoughts. So let’s start with pitching, (of course) Obviously a new starting pitching should be #1 on Omar and the Mets agenda this winter. So what do we have left over from 2009

Johan Santana

Through the first two months of the 2009 season, Johan Santana was unstoppable. In fact, his first ten starts were masterful. At the end of May and through eleven starts his ERA was 1.77, but his record was 7-4 due to the lousy Mets offense and piss poor pen which had to be used because of his high pitch counts. Then in June I started to notice him beginning to move away from his successful strategy of pitching to contact first and going for strikeouts second. That led to his increased pitch counts. But still his pitches per plate appearance were solid though, his pitches per inning did increase. Also noticeable was his balls to strikes ratio and he was not getting outs quite as quickly as he did before and he was not getting nearly as many strikeouts.
But so what? He was still better than most pitchers in the game. He was still a bull Then came all the Mets injuries and with so many players dropping ;like flies Santana remained standing, taking the ball every five days and competing like only he can..What we did not know although suspected was he continued to pitch through an elbow injury that was hidden for much of the year. Ultimately it ended his season when surgery became a must.
So what can se expect in 2010? Everyone is saying the elbow surgery to clean out bone chips was a success, and he will be ready by spring training. What he had done is fairly routine these days, and pitchers almost always return without missing a beat. I guess the only thing that concerns me is that he had a similar problem and surgery prior to the 2003 season; I believe he tore his elbow flexor in 2001. So could this new surgery be a result of the way he pitches that his elbow can’t handle? Oh by the way that the last time he had elbow surgery, he won the Cy Young Award.I want to believe that his surgery has given his elbow new life and he will be back better than ever. And lead to an awesome 2010 season.

Mike Pelfrey

Was it me or did Mike Pelfrey turn a corner the moment Dan Warthen became pitching coach. Mike was on the verge of a breakout season. I even thought he was ready to be our #2 starter when the season began. But then he ended he season with a 10-12 record and a lousy 5.03 ERA. Keep in mind that that Dan Warthen had little or nothing to do with Pelfrey’s turnaround in 2008. Rick Peterson was the pitching coach when Big Pelf beat the Phillies in his first start of the season, and when he threw 7 shutout innings in his second start. But Pelfrey was wildly inconsistent over his next 7 starts, only two that I recall could be graded as really good. Then came his turn around in early June with a 7-inning, 2-run performance against the Dodgers, and continued with a winning stretch in 8 of his next 10 starts Warthen took over in the middle of that run.
You may not remember but Mike had a lower ERA and a better won-loss record in the first half than the second half of 2008. September was only so so for Mike when he was 0-3 with a 4.06 ERA. But Pelf did improve dramatically in 2008 when you compare him to 2007. Pelfrey made us a little nutz in ’09, inconsistent, going back and forth between dominance and disaster, and a few outings that were average at best.
Then there was the “yips” factor that affects Pelfrey from the stretch and bam, there we have it, he can’t pitch from the stretch. As soon as there are base runners he falls apart and starts wiping his brow talking to himself and coming all unglued. How many times did you guys hear me bitchin about that last year? The result was a rise in his ERA. I looked this up; batters hit .325 against Pelfrey with runners on in 2009 which is about 50 points higher than in 2008. Also hurting Pelfrey in ‘09 was that right handed hitters batted close to .300against him which ls also nearly 50 points higher than in ‘08 Don’t ask me to explain that one I have been tearing my hair out all season over that. I do remember thinking he was throwing more four-seam fastballs in the middle of the strike zone and not enough sinkers that move down and in on the righty hitter’s hands that would also explain the drop in double plays. I am only sayin here I don’t really know what went on with him for sure. But all in all he did not scare me when I knew he was pitching like Perez. Pelf had his great days to be sure like going 7+ innings 11 times and winning 10 games. Who can deny that if Pelf had had some support from the offense he might have pulled out a 12-14-win season.
But what about 2010? Will Pelf move forward, or has he hit a wall?
He needs to polish up one of his off speed pitches, he used to use more of his heavy sinker, needs to get back to that AND…..FOCUS WITH RUNNERS ON BASE. I do not expect him to be our #2 starter in 2010 at least not in the first couple of months after that hey ya never know. I think he can still do it someday.

John Maine

Oh Johnny Johnny what are we to think of you? What happened to our rising star. John will be 30 soon so we can no longer call him a young pitcher on the rise. That ship has sailed, that train has pulled out of the station, that…..well you get what I mean.
Maine has gone backward since 2006. His ERA has increased from 3.60 to 4.43. His walks per nine innings have risen his hits per nine innings went from 6.9 to 7.4 Strikeouts per nine innings have dropped from 7.1 to 6.1. He has suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery, and I was encouraged by how well he returned but we did not see enough of him to say he is back on his game. But his drop in velocity did go from 95-96 to 91-92 MPH. But even before the injury, Johnny was regressing , I suppose it was a result of the injury itself .I recall he did win 15 games in 2007, Something you can’t miss is that John did not have strong command of his fastball, his breaking pitches were inconsistent, and his change-up was not all that impressive and I suppose below average. John needs to get back that 96-MPH rising fastball, that was the pitch that many undisciplined hitters could not lay off of. Without that I just dono if Johnny will really return. He does not have all that much else going for him.

Oliver Perez

OMG make him go away.
You could not even say that Oliver Perez had a difficult 2009 season. It was a disaster.
Perez spent most of the season on the disabled list, and pitched like crap when he did pitch, um throw, um what ever the fuck he was doing. Ollie’s troubles started long before opening day, Remember he supposedly allowed himself to get out of shape during the World Baseball Classic and in turn was blasted by both Dan Warthen and Johan Santana. Well it went all to crap from there on.Ollie was one of the first of the starters to go down which for me was a blessing, that supposed knee injury kept h from going past 4 innings, and then our mighty, or as saucy calls it, poison pen came in. Perez was at best mediocre in 9 starts before undergoing season-ending surgery. Ok so I can say that a painful knee would have caused Perez to alter his mechanics that would of course result in lack of command and a dip in velocity. So if Perez is to come back healthy he working with Warthen will have to re-discover the mechanics that made him a dominating pitcher. You know the problem with that: no one is sure which style best suits him. Not Ollie, not Dan not anyone. See Ollie’s biggest issue has been an inability to repeat his pitching motion. He has too many moving parts that have been changed too many times, to the point where he’s not even sure what’s right, er wrong, err oh to Hell with it. Getting back to Warthen who was given credit for “fixing” Ollie, but Perez had his best year in 2007 under Rick Peterson. So, what happened to this crazy ole fool? We have seen him show an awesome arsenal of tools that can dominate hitters for long stretches — to the point where he could have been considered among the top 5 lefthanders in the NL in 2007. But that was then and this is now. Which Ollie will show up in 2010? I have nightmares thinking about it.

Nelson Figueroa

Who could deny that of all the late season auditions, Nelson Figueroa was the most impressive. There was no doubt that Nelson is capable of pitching well enough to give his team a chance to win.
He was spectacular in AAA with a 2.25 ERA through 17 starts, but as it sometimes happens Nelson made 10 big-league starts that were well not so good. But his late season starts make him good enough to warrant consideration for a 2010 MLB contract. One of the things I love about Nelson is Santana like calm and an unflappable calmness when faced with adversity. Compare that to Oliver Perez, Mike Pelfrey, and you can see what I mean. Nelson may be a little short on talent, but he’s long on savvy and knows how to get the most from what he has.Though he had a couple tough outings, for the most part Figueroa was strong as a starter, His complete-game shutout in game was his best as a big leaguer, and capped a strong finish to his season As I recall he allowed only 4 runs in his final 22 innings. Do you realize he had a decision in all ten of his starts? That tells us is that he hung around long enough in every game to either get the win or loss. If you think that’s not such a big deal remember that’s not an impressive fact for a frontline starter, but for someone who would compete for a back-end rotation spot, it’s an indication that he’ll keep his team within striking distance That is what Nelson Figueroa is about, not a superstar, and will rarely win a game all on his own. But, he is a team player, and will be as good as the team he has behind him. Let’s not also forget he fields his position extremely well, he backs up bases, he bunts well, he runs the bases well, and he is not an automatic out at the plate. Basically he does all that he can do. that aint no little thing.
So what do we do with him for 2010? I think the Mets would be smart to offer him at least a minimum-salary, guaranteed MLB contract. Give him a shot to be the long man or possibly the #5 starter.

Tim Redding

When the Mets signed Tim Redding in January 2009, he immediately assumed the #4 spot in the starting rotation. Crazy as that was, that’s where he fit in we had little other choice.
You will recall that at that time the Mets were still scrambling to fill out their rotation behind Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, and an injured John Maine. And then of course Oliver Perez realized no one else was going to sign him even though the Mets seemed happy to bid against themselves for him .WHAT.
We all thought that when pitchers and catchers reported to spring training, Tim Redding was the Mets’ #3 starter unless he would be #4 if John Maine returned at 100%.
But he had several injuries in spring training and began the year on the DL with a shoulder injury. He made his first start as a Met in mid May and as I recall held the Dodgers to 2 hits and 2 runs in like 6 innings. I though hey, we have a replacement for crazy old Ollie Perez. But then came his next starts where he gave up 15-16 hits and about13 runs, basically unable to get out of the fourth inning in either game. And that’s pretty much the way Redding’s season went By July he was relegated to long relief, but returned to the rotation in late August when the Mets ran out of pitchers. He happily shut out the Phillies through five innings before the dreaded bullpen blew the game, and then really started to come around. He was able to go 6 or more innings in 6 of his last 7 starts, and his ERA had dropped to just over 3 He even managed to hold batters to a .216 AVG. in September.
So what’s next? For sure the Mets have to spend a few minutes thinking about Tim Redding.
Now I am not sayin Tim is someone you have as part of the 2010 rotation. But, he for sure is someone you consider as backup depth when things go south again. And oh lets’ be real here they so easily could.
So give him at least a minor league deal full of incentives and send him a welcome wagon to attend spring training. Maybe he will take it maybe not. Maybe put him in the Buffalo rotation, I mean who’s he gonna replace anyways. I would like the insurance. I just don’t want him signing with another team in the NL East (Nationals)
To be continued

In what was a surprise to me is the news that Dave Jauss has been set to be Jerry Manuel’s new bench coach. Jauss has spent time working for the Dodgers, Red Sox and Orioles, ranging in positions from first-base coach to bench coach to minor-league field coordinator.
I say I was surprised cause I was sure Razor Shines would get that job and I am not happy he didn’t. After Razor I thought maybe Sandy Alomar Jr. would get the position. Either would have worked for me. Speaking of Alamar I am sad to hear that he has now left the Mets to join the Indians, their gain our loss. He will be missed especially by the guys who loved and respected him as a Met bullpen catcher and catching instructor.
I dono where this leaves Shines except maybe first base coach which is a fucked up choice. If they were not gonna give Razor the bench coach job they shudda left him at third.
Getting back to Jausds, don’t think for a minute he will eventually get Manuals job. I’m thinking that will eventually go to Wally Backman after he proves everyone wrong and dos a great job as manager of the cyclones.

It’s official The Double-A Binghamton Mets announced today that Tim Teufel will be their manager in 2010.

I got a couple of messages about continuing my analysis of Mets players which I started a few days ago. I am working on it more to come soon. Thanks for the support. Means a lot.

The Mets especially though need all the extra cash to improve next season....they may spend a little more but will not drastically raise the payroll, thanks to that weasel Madoff.|

Just need to make a clarification here. The Wilpon family withdrew their funds before the collapse of the ponzi scheme and actually made a $25 million profit. That profit would be the only money they could stand to lose, not the principal of approximately $500 million that they had invested.

Now to weigh in on the upcoming season. A platoon of Murphy with Nick Evans at first will likely be what the Mets go with to bridge to Ike Davis. Left field will be pursued through free agency. A number two pitcher is desperately needed. We've all given Pelfrey 2.5 years of patience and Maine is clearly an above average number 4 or 5 pitcher. Neise is not a lock but could be a number 5. But we'll never catch the Phillies, Marlins or Braves unless we get much better performances from our starting pitching.

Thank you gambit for the clarification. There was much speculation during the season that the Wilpons were holding the line on salary because they took a huge hit, potentially several hundred million dollars, because of investments with Madoff. If what you say is true, there is NO reason for the Mets not to add in a responsible manner somewhat to the payroll....after all the collapses, poor play and untimely injuries, the Met fans deserve a real commitment to provide a winning club, especially with the division getting more competitive.Playing it safe won't do AT ALL.

Hope Murphy can win the job outright....hit lefties better as the season went on I believe. But if he gets into a funk against them, probably will share the first base duties with Nick Evans. Both do have the potential to be good hitters, best defensively if left at first...but Ike Davis is coming on like a freight train and potentially can be an elite hitter/glove at first base.Hopefully the Ike Davis era begins late in 2010 for the Mets with a callup and taste of big league learning experience before taking over in 2011 at first.

Agre with you on the pitching staff.Santana has to be healthy,as is expected going into spring training.Pelfrey looked more confident in 2008 over most of last year. The psychological hangups have to stop. The guy has the talent....will he have the head to progress to the nerxt level?Maine may have peaked already....can he regain some of the velocity that made him a tough rising pitching star a few years back?He was slow to round to form after the previous season's shoulder bone spur procedure and hopefully has had enough rest armwise to feel confident and strong pitching to his strengths.Hope Niese can continue to build on the impressive progress he was displaying after he returned to the rotation after a dismal spring, derailed by that horrible hamstring tear. The velocity was good making his mix of pitches even more formidable....they need him to be at that level again for the long haul.

Sonny's analysis on the pitching staff was spot on and you know he really observes and understands what's going on,and I am like everyone here looking forward to his continuing comments on the state of the Mets following this discouraging season.God,I wish I had the insight he does(plus the fact he knows a few Brooklyn Cyclone players and got to meet David Wright rehabbing there after his concussion last year...I am SO jealous!!!)

I know he's going to be following the Cyclones even more intently with Wally Backman set to manage them this summer....there's going to be a ton of pressure on Jerry Manuel to get a LOT more out of this club next year, regardless of its makeup or Wally could well make it back to the big club as the new skipper.

gambit you are absoultly correct about the pitching. Like I said it's number one priority. Halladay or Lackey will be a dream come true, hey about this: Halliday,Lacky and Marquis, Can you imagine? I am salavating. There is still talk about Delgado coming back maybe a one year deal, no no no no. Murphy, Evans and then Davis.
Sorry Carlos, you were amasing and I love ya to death but there is a rocking chair in a nursing home with your name on it.

Saucy, thanks for the kind words, and you got that Wright (right) about my Cyclones. I have gotten to know a couple of the boys really well and keep in touch over the winter. It all started with one pitcher who I have bonded with who has introduced me to a few more. I am looking forward to meeting up with Wally Backman and talk to him about the Mets 08-09 seasons, and checking out that ’86 championship ring. Hope he is personable and makes himself available at games.

I often write about my boy Ike Davis but have neglected another kid I met at Keystone, Reese Havens who got off to a slow start in the Arizona Fall League, but now has stated to hit, in fact he has raised his average to .324 Just yesterday, he went 3 for 5 with a double and a triple which comes on a six game hitting streak. Right now he is a taxi squad, so he only plays a couple of games per week.
Look for Reese in 2011

So in case you haven’t heard the Mets are getting new home jerseys. They are a cream colored and pinstriped jersey for the 2010 season, Actually they resemble the one worn by the Mets in the 1960’s, also they are getting rid of their current white pinstriped jersey with the black shadow. The jersey will have the players’ last name on the back and it will also be a Cool Base model, which is the new mesh jersey that teams have been wearing for the last few seasons, and the same material that is used for their batting practice jersey.

Here is Backman obviously reading from a script but sounding determined..

Continuing with thoughts on Mets players, continuing with pitchers

Jonathan Niese

This was a major blow for me to have waited for this kid to get his shot and see him blow it. After three starts in September, Niese did not show us much. Maybe this was one if the cases where the Mets moved him in to soon or he just could not take the pressure. After his move up to AAA he only pitched about 6 games before making his first MLB start. So here4 he was in the middle of a pennant race and crashed and burned. Nerves? You bet. I had seen him pitch well in both AA and AAA and is capable of much more than we saw. Then he pitched a gem against Atlanta, as I recall it was eight innings of shutout ball. I expected more like that cause teams had not yet seen him and usually that gives the pitcher an advantage in their first time facing teams, since the hitters haven’t seen them before and there. Plus their aren’t really any scouting reports. Niese had 5 starts. One was outstanding, two were pretty good and two were pretty bad. Then their was that awful night when he pulled that hammy, So what do we do with him, well for sure I want to se him get another shot, I know he has more than we got to see in 2009.We just need to see how the hammy healed. He is a big kid with a smooth overhand delivery I love and a mean curveball, inconsistent as it was, which shows me he has the tools and the talent to make it big. .What I remember is he needs to get better command of his fastball, and I would wanna see more consistency in his curveball needs to be more consistent. Next I would say he needs more work on the change-up. I think he will figure out what pitch is best strikeout pitch. I am anxious to se his at bats as well, what we have seen in the minors is that he can hit rather well, but I have not seen what he can do with bunts and holding runners. Me, I wanna see him pitch again, his season was cut to short.

Ken Takahashi

Ken Takahashi is a pitcher with pretty ordinary stuff, who will not have much of an impact on a championship club.It all started with Manual and his lefty/righty match up. While I agree with the need for it I don’t always subscribe to it as much and with the intensity of a Jerry Manual. Especially in cases like with Daniel Murphy who Manual refuses to allow to bat against lefties, but that’s another story. Ken was brought in cause the Mets were in need of another lefthander but son of a gun if Ken didn’t end up pitching better against righties that of course had Manual scratching his head wondering what to do with Takahashi. I don’t expect to see him in 2010

Brian Stokes

Brian was a big player in 2009, I looked it up and was surprised to find he pitched in 69 games. He was everywhere, long man, short man, mop up guy, setup man, in middle relief, and of course situational / matchup guy. Whew, the only thing the kid did not do was start. In fact there were times that Manuel used him in back-to-back games, and I am pretty sure I recall him used in three games in a row, but then Brian would go like a week or more without appearing in a game. Obviously Manuel and Warthen did not know what to do with him. Ya had to be impressed with his. 96-97 MPH fastball and shit load of secondary pitches, to bad he can’t strike batters out. He has had an interesting career, shifting from the bullpen to starting and back to the bullpen.
What I saw from him was a fastball which is like a straight line, If needs to have a little sink or lateral movement on it. Also his curve, slider, and change are all inconsistent, Not to say he is without promise, I see him as a good setup man. What does he need to do? Well, work on his fastball grip, and choose one secondary pitch to focus on. If he does that I could see him as a 7th-inning reliever.

Francisco Rodriguez

Ah Frankie, Frankie, This is our closer, and I love him even though he gave us a few scares last year. He only had about 40 save opportunities. 7 of em blown and his ERA increased by a run and a half not to mention his losses doubled. Kinda unusual, cause generally, pitchers who move from the AL to the NL improve their
overall numbers. So what happened, has he worn down, his fastball was in the 95-97 MPH range, occasionally flirting with 98. This past year he was usually in the 92-93 range, hitting 95some times. What I heard K-Rod say was that the drop in velocity has to do with improving his command and the way he masked his change-up. Interestingly is that he gave up about as many hits and walks as he always did. Then there is the fact that Frankie always allowed too many base runners, but, and this is key, he’s having a little more trouble pitching out of the jams he got himself into. But still, even with a drop in velocity and more guts seeing and hitting him, K-Rod is still among the best closers in baseball. Consider also the Jerry Manual effect, before he came to NY Frankie was almost never asked to pitch more than three outs, fact is he never retired more than three batters in 2008. Also he was not used to being used more than three games in a row. But now Jerry Manuel had K-Rod pitch multiple innings at least four times during the year, Something Frankie was not used to at all. The Mets have K-Rod for at least another two years plus he’s a near-lock to be a Met in 2012 as well, an option that option is guaranteed if he finishes 55 games in 2011 and 100 games total between 2010 and 2011 and is declared healthy by doctors. That’s a substantial investment we gotta protect.

J.J. Putz

The Mets signed Francisco Rodriguez to be their 2009 closer, in a move that had to be made to get their bullpen back to where it was before Billy Wagner blew out his elbow. I remember how excited I was when we signed him. But what we did not know was that J.J. was damaged goods. Dono how but The Mets completely ignored an elbow issue that kept Putz out of action for over a month of the 2008 season, which by the way was an issue that could be traced back to 2006. In what turned out to be an irresponsible show of self-denial,(how often did we see that) the Mets continued to ignore Putz’s elbow issues in fact Jerry Manuel rode him hard, even after a mysterious drop in velocity in spring training, a flare-up revealed in an MRI taken in May, and when JJ admitted to have Pain in June. As it turned out, the whole thing came crashing down and the Mets season began to spin out of control. Of course JJ’s failure wasn’t the only thing that destroyed the Mets in ‘09, but his inability to perform, and what we now know was a questionable deal that brought him in made us wonder about what was going on in Mets management. What a huge disappointment, we never got to see the one two punch of Putz and K-Rod that we had salivated for. It must have been difficult for the Mets to let Putz walk and call the deal a wash.So here we are back again in need of someone to hand the ball to K-Rod. Bobby Parnell? Jenry Mejia?

Bobby Parnell

Did you guys know that Bobby was a shortstop converted to relief pitcher? His career as a pitcher after being drafted by the Mets was he was a reliever converted to a starter. Then converted from starter back to relief. Then, he was converted from reliever back to starter. And before the season closed, Bobby was back in the bullpen.Talk about getting jerked around, But the Mets are good at that, Aaron Heilman and Grant Roberts for example What is it about Mets management and their inability to make a decision one way or the other about Bobby,You had to notice that his velocity drops dramatically when used as a starter. In both roles his fastball often has heavy sink, you can see it often sits flat and high in the middle of the strike zone. I don’t remember him having much in the way of an off speed pitch if any. Slider sucks as well. I remember Bobby as a relief pitcher, showing some brilliance but he was inconsistent. His biggest issue I am sure you will agree is his lack of command and then there is his secondary stuff. Problem is once batters realize all he could get over the plate was the fastball, it was so long good bye, they plain and simple just sat on it.
Then there was the WTF time when the Mets moved Bobby to the starting rotation after failing in the bullpen. How did that turn out…. DISASTER that’s how. You guys know about starching out a pitcher, but he went from throwing 15-20 pitches per outing, about 3-4 times per week, to throwing 80-100 pitches once every five days in like two weeks. That’s’ not stretching him out that’s wearin him down. What happened to conserving pitch counts, especially with the young guys? Bottom line, Parnell did not establish himself in either role, part of that should be blamed on the way he was handled. He needs more time to develop. The question is what would be best for Parnell, to pitch as a starter, or to focus on relief?

Fernando Nieve

When things were beginning to fall apart in June, Fernando Nieve was called upon to fill a huge hole in the starting rotation, but only lasted a month. His leg injury came ay a very bad time, his ERA was 2.95 through 7 starts and 36 innings. He was spectacular going 6+ innings in each game and allowing only about 3 earned runs through 18 innings. He was on his way to becoming one the Mets’ biggest success story, and then the Mets injury curse kicked in and his quadriceps muscle gave out and he was off to the DL.So what’s next, first he has to come back 100% healthy from what is a major tear in his thigh. What worries me there is that he has had to heal and rehab under the Mets’ guidance, which based on their record scares me. Maybe (hopefully) in the off season the Mets will make better decisions are made in his rehab. Come to think about it we have heard nothing about him since he went down. I hope and assume he is working on his game.Another thing to consider is that Nieve had Tommy John surgery in 2007; I think it takes about two years to make a full recovery. But that’s without the addition of a leg injury so you gotta add time for that.
He was touching 96 MPH occasionally; a little lower than 98-99 MPH velocity that made him a top prospect with the Astros is questionable. But of course good enough to be successful, plus there is that killer change-up. I believe Nieve has the stuff to fill a role on the Mets pitching staff. The Mets need to have a little patience here.
So let’s start him out in AAA as a starter and let him get in the innings needed to sharpen up the rough edges, then he could be back as either a decent back end starter or a strong middle reliever / setup man.

Pat Misch

I was waiting and waiting for this kid to come up and when he did I was so stoked. Who could forget that first day with him a d Thole, But the teaming of Misch and/ Thole had its good days and bad days, including that shutout I will never forget. But As a LOOGY out of the bullpen, Pat was ineffective especially against the Left handed hitters we saw it all with him, great outings, awful outings, and average outings. But that was taken from a very small sampling.Misch rarely reaches 90 MPH, and he has to have his off speed pitches working well. His control is very good, but his command within the zone not so much. We also saw him throw too many hittable pitches over the middle of the plate. I always liked him and feel he can be great. Let him join Nieve in AAA and sharpen his game. Look for big things from him.

Sean Green

I always shook and sweated when ever Shawn was called to the mound, I mean this kid could be awful. He did not come as advertised; we were told he was a sneaky fast, sinker balling side armer who would knock our socks off. What we may not have known (or did we) is that he had to be used judiciously. He tended to weaken in the second half, and his performance dropped considerably when overused. So of course Manual did the same thing he did with so many others in that situation ride him till he dropped. In 80 appearances his ERA was about 8 But he did improve holding opposing hitters. I think Manuel tended to use him as a specialist against right handed hitters, but in fact left handed hitters had a lower batting average against him.Because of his inconsistency, Green never really had an established role in the bullpen. Manual would use him for several days in a row, then not use him at all for a week. In fact Green was used with no rest or one day’s rest in about 50 of his 80 or so games By the end of the season, he was so out of out and burned out that he tried pitching from a much lower release point, sorta like closer to submarine style. That worked well, and he raised his ERA to 2.19 ERA and allowed only 7 hits in his last 17 appearances. So what do we do with this guy, I sorta want him back in the Mets pen in 2010. I wanna see more of him with that further down under delivery, it worked well for him I recall thinking maybe he has something there..

To be continued…

The Mets have announced plans to expand the presence of club history at Citi Field next season in a variety of ways including renaming areas of the ballpark after Casey Stengel, Gil Hodges, Tom Seaver and William A. Shea.
In addition, The Mets also have re-formed the Mets Hall of Fame Committee, and will increase the number of visuals commemorating great players and moments both inside and outside the ballpark. The Mets previously announced a 2010 opening of the Mets Hall of Fame & Museum at Citi Field.
The Mets will rename and visually theme Citi Field's VIP entrances and outfield bridge after individuals who made an indelible mark on the club. First Base VIP will be named after Hodges to honor the manager who led the Mets to their first World Championship in 1969. Third Base VIP will honor Seaver, the Hall of Fame pitcher and Mets leader in wins, earned run average and strikeouts. Left Field VIP will be named after Stengel, the first manager in Mets history. The outfield bridge will be dedicated as Shea Bridge, honoring the legacy of the man who was the driving force to bring National League baseball back to New York after the departure of the Dodgers and Giants.
The centerpiece for Mets memorabilia will be the Mets Hall of Fame & Museum, located adjacent to the Jackie Robinson Rotunda and accessible from both inside and outside the ballpark. A re-formed Mets Hall of Fame Committee will evaluate potential inductees, and is comprised of a combination of media members with a long-standing connection to the club and Mets front office staff.

Good news! I have been waiting for word on Keith Hernandez and if he will be back in the booth with Gary and Ron. Finally yesterday an agreement was made that will extend Keith on through at least 2011.
You may remember at the last game of the season Keith he hinted that he might not return for a fifth season in the booth. "I've enjoyed the four years, I'm in the middle of negotiating my new contract.. hopefully, I'll be back, If not, it's been a great four years." Ron Darling and Gary Cohen are under contract for the 2010 season. I am not sure how long we will have Kevin B. But he will also be back in 2010.
The news made my day cause I love love Gary Keith and Ron in the booth and Kevin on the field and in the clubhouse. No game would be the same without em.

NLB is looking to hold regular-season games in Puerto Rico in 2010, teams. Not sure who thee Mets opponent would be, but in past years the Florida Marlins have shown interest.

Let me finish up with my thoughts abut Mets pitchers

Pedro Feliciano

Here is a guy I did not shake and quake about when he was called in from the pen. He was for sure one of the One of the few bright spots on a scary relief pitching staff. I think I read somewhere that he set a New York Mets record for appearances with 88 and Walks per 9 IP .He is also the guy Jerry Manuel used whether he needed to or didn’t, and always in matchup situations against left handed hitters. But that’s cause although he was called a LOOGY; Feliciano was pretty effective against right handed batters as well. In fact it’s hard to imagine a Mets bullpen without Pedro Feliciano. Come on…he is the master at retiring left handed hitters, Ya have to think this guy might have the ability to be a solid setup man. But with Manual, that ain’t ever gonna happen. So we prolly won’t ever know….at least not with Jerry.

Elmer Dessens

God ole reliable Elmer was the go to guy the Mets bullpen down the stretch, oops, can I say stretch when talking about the Mets?? Anyways we did not get a whole lot of playing time for us to really analyse the guy. I seem to recall most of the game he was brought in to pitch were on an occasional blowout, and he rarely pitched under duress. The Advantage and probable reason for his good numbers came from the fact that hitters knew so little about him I wonder how well he’d pitch after the scouting reports caught up with him.So what we will have in spring 2010 is an almost 40 journeyman with a sketchy past, but the Mets don’t have a shit load of pitchers banging down the door so it can’t hurt the Mets to offer Dessens a minor-league contract for 2010, and stick him in AAA.

Lance Broadway

I only saw Lance like about a dozen times so it’s hard to talk much about him.
The kid does have a sinking fastball with excellent movement down and in to the right handers, but I don’t recall seeing him go above 90 MPH, plus his command was inconsistent. I don’t recall him having much in the way of secondary stuff, maybe a cut fastball/slider, that’s about it.I do however remember thinking Lance was cool and calm on the mound he seemed very much the pro and pretty much unflappable that can go a long way, as it’s something that few pitchers can develop if it isn’t already part of their makeup. Are ya listening Pelf, can you hear me Ollie?? For lance to make it I think with his high-80s low 90s velocity, he needs to have pinpoint control and develop a plus off-speed pitch. Did not see that in ’09. But he can work that out, and considering the Mets’ lack of depth in the upper levels of the farm system, they pretty much have to start him in AAA Buffalo in 2010 and hope for the best. It probably makes sense to keep him in the starting rotation as a minor leaguer, so that he can spend more time and innings developing command of his fastball and a secondary pitch.

There is not much to say about any of the pitchers like Toby Stoner and Darren O’Day so t won’t

Next up, the core players. Guess who I will be starting with?? ;)

Speaking of core players, the Mets are rumored to be close to re-signing Alex CORa to a one year with option for a second year contract. He is a pretty reliable utility guy as long as that is the use. He got injured and wore out as an everyday guy this past year.

Thanks syam for the update on the Mets re-upping Alex Cora.If everyone is healthy,Alex will be great backing up several positions. He plays hard and before he got hurt did an admirable job starting and leading off, even if he is best suited as a jack of all trades, albeit a good one.

Always appreciate sonny's perspectives, and as usual not much to quibble with.Your dedication to the Mets and well founded observations and perspectives come not only from a fan who loves the game but is deicated to the appreciation of the nuances of how the game is played. We know there are many question marks for next year, and hopefully most of them are answered....can't wait for your analysis on the rest of the club.I'm guessing that the first will be a certain Mr. Wright?;)

Glad to see Keith Hernandez re-up for the Mets broadcast booth the next three years. In the local paper it's been mentioned that both Ron Darling and Gary Cohen, the remainder of the Met broadcasting team really appreciate how Keith adds to the group with his ability to inject humor at the right time,to really add some intelligence yet levity to the proceedings.Ron Darling has stated if it weren't for Keith, the game experience would be that much less enjoyable because both Ron and Gary are by nature more serious, more reserved than Keith...and his playfulness and humor brings a more jovial, entertaining effort out of the group as a whole.Keith is great at what he does, and his perspectives are more solid because he doesn't take himself as seriously as he does the game. His incisiveness is even more pointed, packs even more punch when he makes criticisms....direct,honest,but always constructive as he was in the shoes of the players here for several years as a main part of their success in the 80's.And with the stuff the Mets have put their fans through over the past few years, any bit of humor and entertainment in the process of watching a Mets broadcast is very welcome indeed.

The Mets are going to have three home uniforms next year ....including the new cream colored retro-feel pinstripes.Love the way the organization on several fronts is going back to honor the heritage of the best Met clubs,on several fronts. But it would be nice if they would settle on a regular home uniform.....best yet if they would just play hard, inspired, never say die, smart baseball far more often than not in the upcoming season.

I like the Cora deal as well, he got a one year contract for the 2010 season,
with a vesting, club option for 2011.Perfect!
Cora had some nice things to say after the announcement that he was excited about coming back and that we have a lot to prove as a team after what happened last year. He also felt he had unfinished business.
For him having been hurt a great deal of the time (he had season-ending surgery in August on the torn ligaments in both of his thumbs). And felt he really wasn’t able to perform like I knew he could.
I also loved that he said “We all have something to prove.”
He did well at second filling in Reyes but was also great for us as a pinch hitter going .417 in 16 plate appearances. Good instincts and leadership.

You are Wright Saucy, David will be up first, maybe in a day or two
I will get that up. ;)

Love how you worded that, sonny!David is most definitely worth getting up to.;)(Ya knew I couldn't leave that alone!:p)

Yeah I knew Getting it up would get your attention, I think it’s why I wrote it that way and you did not let me down you dog you.
I was privy to some great cyclones locker room stories from when David was there last summer. Nothing sexual, just wish I coulda been there. ;)

Brian Schnider will joining the Phillies in a two year deal. Brian will catch when Carlos Ruiz has the day off.We knew Brian would not be a Met next year but did not know where he would end up. I can’t wish him luck since he is now a Phillie but I will say that although his bat was mostly cold his catching skills and ability to call a game was always first rate. I loved the way he worked with the younger pitchers, Pelf in particular.

Phillies backup catcher Chris Coste has signed a 1-year contract with the Mets, but the contract only guarantees him a spot on the 40-man roster, but not the Opening Day 25-man roster.

Still no word on Molina after much speculation that he would be the Mets catcher in 2010. Molina is in a type A classification which means the Mets would have to give up a draft pick plus cash for him. He did have 25 hrs last year but he is 35 now and lets face it, the poor tubby can’t run. :( The Giants did not offer salary arbitration to Molina, although they have said they would like Molina back for one more year, to help break in 2008 first-round draft pick Buster Posey.prolly offer molina a one-year deal, wiith incentives, which is prolly what the Mets offer him maybe with an option for 2011.

The Atlanta Braves have signed Billy Wagner, who is a Type A free agent, to a one-year, $7 million deal with a vesting option for a second year.

The Mets have decided not to offer salary arbitration to free agents Carlos Delgado and Fernando Tatis. Bye bye Carlos good luck in the American League. It’s Murphy's shot knoe (I hope) and then of course Ike Davis. I don’t usually like dropping names but my Cyclone buddy got a call from Ike over the weekend and I got to speak with him again. I Ended the call with “see you at Citi soon” After I hung up I wondered…
he knew I meant on the field right? :D

Baseball America has posted its AFL Top 10 prospect list.
The Mets are the only team with 2 players on the list.

1. Stephen Strasburg – RHP – Nationals
2. Buster Posey- C - Giants
3. Dominic Brown – RF - Phillies
4. Dustin Ackley – OF – Mariners
5. Josh Bell – 3B -Orioles
6. Jenrry Mejia – RHP – Mets
7. Freddie Freeman – 1B – Braves
8. Yonder Alonso – 1B – Reds
9. Starlin Castro – SS – Cubs
10. Ike Davis – 1B – Mets :=D:

Mejita has had a rough start, very rough but then has performed well. I Love his changeup and once he masters his secondary pitches…watch out.

Davis is a future superstar I have watched him play and for sure Right handers have little chance at beating or even fooling him. He knows he needs to improve himself against the lefties, it’s a challenge he will most certainly overcome.

So I heard today that the building D Wright has his penthouse in has a vacancy, it’s on the fourth floor and can be gotten for a cool $4.2 million. Hey David, it’s me from downstairs can I borrow a cup of sugar?
I haven't been to that building since last summer when me and the boys went to try and catch him hanging around somewhere. Ya know, like My fair lady "On the street where he lives"

I am such a girl
