New York Mets 2009

You guy's are still here?

No worries, I've been an O's fan for life, I know what it feels like. :(

Mets injuries continue to go on and on and on

It is looking more and more like the first player to come back will be Billy Wagner who is expected to begin a rehab assignment next week.
Billy is chompin at the bit and wants very much to join the team in any capacity they want to fit him in.

Meantime, Carlos Beltran will have his knee re-examined in the next few days, he will get another MRI on his injured right knee to see if the bone bruises have subsided. Beltran has been slow to recover. He has been mostly limited to pool exercises Carlos is getting fed up with the way the Mets medical staff ha been treating his injury and is beginning to speak out about it. He basically blames them for handling the injury poorly and may have contributed to making it worse.

Wanna bet Beltan is out for the season.

Jose Reyes hit in the simulated game against Billy Wagner and is close to running the bases again
Oh Joy Jose will actually finally run again.

Wanna bet Reyes is out for the season

John Maine, will be getting a second opinion on his injured shoulder. Seems like he has had a second and maybe even a third opinion already. But ho can keep track of this mess. You need to keep a scorecard just on the daily injury reports.

Wanna bet Maine is out for the season???

Gary Sheffield is thisclose to going on the Dl, Well why not, if you re a Met it seems to be the thing to do, rather sheik. His sore right hamstring continues to bother him. But the wacky Mets were willing to put him in last night to pinch hit if they needed him

Alex Cora, re-aggravated his right thumb injury. He had been playing with a torn ligament in the thumb since early June.

Are they trying to kill these guys????

JJ Putz, who had surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow, is throwing long tosses off flat ground.
Mid August looks likely for his return.

Carlos Delgado, who is recovering from hip surgery, is progressing. He worked out indoors Friday in Florida. Looking good for him to be back about the same time as Wagner and Putz.

Really excited to see Jon Niese pitch tonight.

my bets are that beltran and maine are done for the year, reyes will come back eventually full speed and not be able to hit at all, billy wagner will fill in the setup role nicely, and putz will come back but not be overworked.

niese pitched a beautiful game tonight, he's looking better and better. sheffield is now officially on the DL (duh at this point) and im expecting a quick recovery because of a phantom injury. sheffield was not happy with this move, but he's being quiet and just saying "yes sir, no sir" to the brass.

i was impressed with Jerry's decision to put murphy in the cleanup spot. and he delivered big with the RBI double and francoeur followed up the spot nicely. it seems like francoeur was a solid move, if for nothing else than the power we weren't getting from church. frankie did his best to make the game interesting

hopefully a win tomorrow, livan vs. chad moeler, and then we're returning home to take on the wild card leading rockies. :help:

Sheffield is not happy about going on the DL but is being a team player about it. But he is NOT happy at all. Putting him on the DL makes sense for two reasons, first of all he can’t play everyday, he is still feeling the pain and playing might aggravate the situation and make it worse. Funny how a Mets player can go from a “strain” to the DL in just a short time, but that’s our Mets. The other reason it makes sense is we needed to make room on the roster for Jon Niese and rather than loose someone in the pen or a bench player, taking Gary off made good sense.

Niese did not disappoint and was excellent. I was so looking forward to his coming up and watching him pitch was a thrill for me. He struggled a bit in the first inning but came back strong and in command.
That curve is amazing, he slows it down to about 70 MPH and then they way it moves making it difficult for the batter to keep focus on the ball, as it comes at em, is perfection.
Add to that his ability to pitch both up and down in the strike zone and you have the makings of a great pitcher. He can throw a decent cutter as well. Of course that 90+ MPH fastball ain’t bad either. His balls to strike ratio was excellent as well at about 35/65 He retired 16 outta the last 18 he faced.
Gotta give credit to Santos who called an excellent game, and was outstnding at the plate as well. Prolly won't see him today though I expect Schnider to get some work. Did you know Jon was born to be a Mets? He was born on 10/27/86 witch is nth day the Mets won the championship.

Yeah, K-Rid gave us some drama, I dono why Jerry even put him in. The pen could have easily finished up. Now we may not be able to use him today if we need him.

I like Murph in clean up as well. I especially like Pagan in leadoff followed by Castillo. Hey, we may be on to something here. We had Reyes, Castillo, Wright, Beltran and Delgado but now we have Pagan, Castillo, Wright, Murphy and Francoeur. I am beginning to see hope in that line up.

I loved the great all around team play the past two wins.Niese looks like a premiere young pitching stud again(sonny is so great at picking up strengths and weaknesses, especially of pitchers and I know Niese was one of those who along with Brad Holt just light his eyes up with their potential).Hernandez showed what a great veteran professional does...he tends to have rough starts but right now he keeps bearing down, pitching enough innings to not tax the relief staff and shut the opponents down the rest of the way.

The offense?Three home runs Saturday night....I saw the David Wright shot live(got home late after work)and cheered getting out of my seat in the Living room watching that bomb fly!He had two more hits and two RBI today, and is looking MUCH more comfortable again.Castillo,Pagan,Murphy yesterday,Francouer with that missile launch yesterday, two more RBI today,Santos' rocket....I'm loving this exciting, assertive approach and hope it continues as we get at least some of our guys back from the DL.

A bit down because of John Maine's seeming inability to get healthy....hopefully the second opinion from Dr. Andrews he's getting early this week won't provide too serious a blow.Hopefully he can recover and resume his career,if not this season certainly next. But it is a bit worrisome....and the way the Mets have handled injury situations concerns me and their approach must improve and they have to regain the trust of their players and fans that they have a handle on how things must be resolved when it comes to openness and sound medical practices to limit the seriousness of such situations.I do like the move to hold back Sheffield until he gets a full chance to heal that hamstring.Much better judgement than they've shown previously, even if Sheffield believes he can go out there and play right now.

Excellent points saucy, I joined you in jumpin out a my chair seeing DWright hit that homer, it was sooo good to see him running those bases again.

I too would live to see Maine get good news, but I worry about how unhealty he has been for most of the year. Too bad, cause when he's healty that kid has some filty stuff. We shoukd hear something soon after the doctors visit on wednesday.

As to Sheffield, he will get over his disapointment as soon as he realises he needs to rest and to get well, he ain't no kid anymore. The question will be what to do after the 15 days, who do we loose to keep Niese?
It has to be a pitcher cause we just don't have any bench players to spare, I would have been ok loosing Redding but he is not going cause the Mets don't want to lose any starting pitching depth. Stay tuned

I am happy you like my pitching posts. I have been obsessed with pitching ever since my unlce stared to teach me how to pitch when i was 10. Sometimes it's alll I wanna talk about. :D

Now about yesterday's game, our boys keep on a hittin and are 4-6 on that road trip. Of course the best things that happened yesterday was Livan Hernandez who after a shaky and scary first inning came back strong and in command of his 4 seam fastball, and that was all the adjustment he needed to go seven strong innings. He even managed a base hit. Feliciano and Green were outstanding finishing off the Astros.

The Hernandez/Schneider match up was perfect. One hand always knowing exactly what the other is doing. I love seeing that. Compare that to the Astros pitcher Moehler and catcher Pudge, they were totally out of sync, confused and bewildered by one another, and that ain’t no exaggeration
But Mauler seemed to be confused by a lot of things yesterday; did you see him hold back on his pitch when he realized Sullivan was on third? It looked like he did not know whether to throw from a wind up or stretch. Seriously, with a man on third he could not make up his mind on that?? He did not immediately just go into a stretch which is of course what a pitcher has to do in that situation. I mean come on dude. Ask any little leaguer they will explain it to you.
I have said it before watching a pitcher and catcher work well together as Livan and Brian did is like a beautiful symphony to me. Watching those two Astros and tere lack of communication was pathetic to watch.
Speaking of pathetic, I have often laughed about Ollie Perez and his hitting, but that kid Moehler at the plate makes Ollie look good. Did you see his swing? OMG! Yeah I know he’s a pitcher and not expected to hit all that well. But a lot of pitchers are excellent hitters, he could at least spend a bit of time with the hitting coach cause his at bats are an embarrassment.

Yesterday I mentioned what a great job I thought Pagan is doing replacing Reyes in the lead off spot, but you also have to give him credit for the outstanding job he is doing in center field replacing Beltran. That awesome throw to the plate too nail Blum was right on. Schneider making a great lay at the plate there as well. Gee, a Reyes and a Beltran all rolled all into one?? Well maybe not but close enough for me.;)

Well its Perez tonight. Do you guys think in light of Mets resurgence that Ollie might surprise us and come through big time tonight? He has done it before and while even if he does I would not expect it to last into many future games, tonight would be a great time for him to pitch a winner.

Tony B is fired
Omar goes after Daily News writer (Adam Rubin) claiming he wrote stories about Tony B cuz he wanted his job

WOW

so much for the boring Mets ;)

Mets fire executive Bernazard

ESPN.com news services

The New York Mets fired vice president for player development Tony Bernazard, who has been implicated in recent outbursts involving the team's minor leaguers and closer Francisco Rodriguez.
Omar Minaya announced Bernazard's dismissal at a news conference Monday afternoon in which the general manager and New York Daily News reporter Adam Rubin squared off after Minaya inferred that Rubin wrote stories to try to get Bernazard fired so he could take his job.

The news conference took a bizarre turn when Minaya said that Rubin, who wrote the initial story about Bernazard's confrontation in Binghamton, had lobbied in the past to get a personnel job with the Mets.
Rubin told Minaya he was "despicable" for implying that Rubin wrote a story to get Bernazard fired so he could get a job with the Mets.

Glad to see Bernazard gone, seems like he's nothing but a boarish bully. Nobody should be allowed to act in the pompous manner he has appeared to. Supposedly, he was the reason Delgado didn't come to the Mets as a free agent several years ago, in addition to some of the rumored back stabbing of Randolf and "spying" in the clubhouse. But, what was that crap trying to put blame on Adam Rubin for writing stories about Tony B. Stupid mistake, taking on the media. Idiots in control. On to the game of baseball.....Well, THREE in a ROW!! Gadzooks! Good hitting, nice bullpen work, and of course the clutch SLAM by Tatis. Nice to see some things come together in a positive light instead of waiting for things to go wrong. At another time Tatis would have hit into a DP. Good effort all 'round. Let's Go Mets!!

i resisted posting yesterday, afraid of jynxing it but im happy theyve won 3 in a row, first time since mid-May :gogirl:

Sonny is right, I'm starting to like the Pagan, Castillo, Wright, Murphy, Francoeur lineup. Especially after Danny Murphy's PERFECT sacrifice bunt!!

When Jerry pinch-hit Tatis, I was furious, whole heartedly expecting a double play, inning over. That pitch had DP written on it. The swing looked sac fly, but he put enough power to make a majestic Grand Slam. (!) Loudest I've cheered watching them on a Tv in a LONG time. Frankie closed it up nicely, good bounce back. I LOVE bringing him in with a 4-run lead, it tends to work, lol.

Tomorrow is Marquis (12-6) vs. Pelf (7-6). Pelf could use a nice start here to build on is last start, which was good but still a loss. Mets fans may remember Marquis as the Cubs 5th starter last year who hit a grand-slam off of Johnathan Niese on September 22, 2008. I remember, it was the last game I ever saw at Shea. #-o

Here's hoping for a 4 game run!!

47-51, 10.5 out of 1st place behind Phillies, 6.5 behind Rockies for Wild Card

Omar Minaya is a punk!

We have all know that for a while now but yesterday the low life cocksucking little twirp proved it.
As you know by now tony Bernazard was fired. That was the good news, but instead of coming to a news conference to announce that the Mets had made a decision to fire Tony B and were now going to focus on rebuilding the minor league system and is hopeful for a bright future in our farm system. Omar instead decided to use that format to attack NY Daily News beat writer Adam Rubin.
Omar basically said that Adam was responsible for Tony D’s downfall and was probably did it for his own gain. Omar said he thought Adam was going after Tony’s job
Of course the truth is that Omar was pissed because he got busted and had to fire Tony B because of Adams reporting. As I wrote before, I firmly believe that both Omar and the Mets front office had to have known what was going on with Tony B. Not even Omar is that stupid or ignorant. So Omar was embarrassed and humiliated and had to take action.
But to go after one of the best beat writers in NY Omar has probably alienated himself from all media. He will be a target now for sure and hopefully they will make his life more miserable than it all ready is.
Adam did in fact contact Fred Wolpon for career advice, testing the waters to see what might be out there. Adam is only in his mid thirties and has aspirations for a future in sports other than Writing. In fact yesterday Wolpon admitted that he had those types of conversations with Rubin and went on to say that Adam is not the first writer to ask him for job advice. and feels those types of questions from people on a fairly regular basis. For Omar to then turn that around and basically state that he felt Adam was after Tony Bs job is the thinking’s of a very desperate man and had no validity what so ever.

Hey Wolpons are you listening to what your GM is saying and doing?? Are you fed up with him yet??

Tony D did a despicable thing in AA with that ya wanna fight bullshit, but as it turns out there have been several other similar incidents. A VP can not behave that way, it sends a very unprofessional message to the field, and is totally unproductive. Add to that the fact that Tony D has dome so little to develop the minor league affiliates. Omar bankrupted the farm system and Tony ran it into the ground.

Tick tock Omar, you need to go next.

*Sonny steps of his soap box now*

Another nice win last night, Oliver Perez was not terrible but not great either I liked that he pitched out of a couple of jams but worry about the idea that he got into those jams in the first place. He just does not seem to be getting a whole lot better but at least he is not getting worse. Oh Ollie, what are we to do with you. Stokes looked great especially his slider, and commanding his breaking stuff. Feliciano and K-Rod had no problems finishing the Astros off.

Luis Castillo continues to rock, did you hear how the Citi crowd always gives him cheers when he catches a ball?? Thing is, ever since that dropped ball in Yankee stadium Luis has been on a tear and playing great baseball. He also catches fly balls with two hands now. He has nine hits in his last four games,

Daniel Murphy executed an absolutely awesome bunt. This from a kid who not so long ago could not bunt worth a hoot. It shows his dedication and hard work at perfecting his skills.

Then of course the hero of the night Fernando Tatis and his grand slam, the 8th of his career. Manual had to feel good about the decision to put Tatis in to replace Sullivan to face the lefty Morales, it was a gutsy move considering we had the bases loaded and Tatis as been struggling, not to mention his propensity lately to hit into double plays. But the decision turned out to be a great one and Tatis rewarded Jerry’s confidence in him with a blast to the seats.

That 8th inning was a blast to watch. First of all the Astros pitcher Rincone was drop dead awful. He could not throw strikes and our boys took full advantage of him. Scoring four runs in that inning.

The Mets have won three in a row from tough teams and all without Santana.

Tonight it will be up to Pelfrey to keep it going. Hard to say what he will do, the kids got the stuff but if he gets off to a bad start his head will stat messin with him again and he will pitch poorly. Fortunately our offense can over come any Astro runs Pelf may give up. But Big Pelf could also be positively brilliant, we have seen that before and this would be the night for that brilliance to come out.

OUR OFFENSE WILL COME THROUGH! Wow, how long has it been since we could say that? :D

Atta boy Dan, never give up.;) Although I can not agree about omar, I think he ha made a lot of poor judgement calls as I have agonised in this thread over time.
We have no depth, nobody to pick up the pieces. I saw Tony Bernazard at the Cyclones game this week and wanted desperately to speak with him about that problem. Someday I will get my chance to vent to him.

I guess you're going to have to do that if you find him on the unemployment line. Good riddance to him.

I agree with you Sonny that Omar has to go. Given that we're much worse off than when he took the reigns (Mets second to last, with our AAA team in last and our AA team in last and currently a PR nightmare). We have now been cast as a club with such a screwed up front office with things out of control that players would have to be crazy to come here.

UNFORTUNATELY, I believe Omar has a three year extension on his contract and where else in the organization can he go that he wouldn't screw things up. I don't think the Wilpons will eat three years.

I think at worst, they will keep him away from a microphone for a while, lay low with the press and work towards rebuilding the reputation of the Mets front office.

It's a shame that this is coming as the team is beginning to play well. We don't need the distractions.

the press conference and subsequent mea culpas are the stuff of ..........................

hard to believe omar minaya is in control of the ny mets

his personal meltdown over this incident is beyond unfortunate

IMO it proves that he is def not the man to bring the franchise to great heights

he appears very much over his head

Jeff Wilpon was interviewed today and apologized to the fans and Adam Rubin for the way Minaya has handled things and the damage that Minaya has done to the organization. He said be patient and that Minaya will address the press and personally address Adam Rubin. Wilpon restated that Minaya is the GM and the "Face of the Organization".

Should it really be necessary for the owner to do this? I thought these executives got the big bucks because of their professionalism.

Guess not...

Another nice game last nite! Pelfrey pitching into, but better yet, pitching out of jams. Stellar relief, enuff hitting to get some runs, a couple of lucky plays, Castillo's hit off of second base and being called safe at the plate for run #4. Nice to see the breaks going our way for a change. Defense was good, superb double play started by Murphy with Pelfrey on the back end. A good string going, lets see Santana keep it going. Let's Go Mets!!

It looks a few of you are on the same page as I am regarding Omar.

I appreciated Jeff Wilpon’s news conference and his apologies to Adam Rubin. I also needed him to say basically that Omar was wrong in what he said. But I did not find his words all that sincerer, I think he was more annoyed by how Omar handled Tony B. and embarrassed the front office and less about what was said about him, and that is disturbing. No one has talked about the miserable job Tony B did with the affiliates or explained why he spent so much time meddling in the Major league camps. I still need answers to that.

But we move on,
Last night, Mike Pelfey was as good as I have ever seen him, he threw hard. Pounding the ball. He got into trouble a couple of tomes got out of trouble brilliantly. Getting Barmes to pop up twice was a thing of beauty. He had that 4 seamier going which he threw hard as well as his sinker.
A very important element to last nights outing is that Pelf did not come unglued at all, even with loaded bases, and no Baulks. He did not stress or talk to himself, just hard concentration, and that is very comforting and encouraging to see. The only thing I still see is when he has to throw from the stretch rather than the windup; he still seems a little uncomfortable. Of course with as many guys a he had on base he could not throw much from the wind up. He needs to get over that.

Our bullpen was great again.

Murphy once again a great game, I especially liked that double play assist. Early yesterday Daniel worked out with Carlos Delgado on fist base skills. What a thrill for Murph to have Carlos out there showin him the ole tricks of the trade. Carlos is a big Murphy supporter going back to when Murph first came up. A lot of the veteran took to Murphy including Beltran who was coaching him in the outfield. In fact, as I think I may have mentioned before Delgado gave Murph his first base glove which he still uses every day he plays first.

Today it’s Santana and Hammel.

Tomorrow we get to see Niese again, Jon has been working with Worthan on concealing his pitchers. Jon has been guilty of tipping off batters to soon. I will be looking for what he does to improve that. Jon is a tall kid at 6’4, so I imagine he has long fingers. (No jokes please) That means it is easier for him to grip the ball. A better grip on the ball means more of the ball is covered by the Jon's hand, soooooo it is less likely the batter will be able to detect the release of the ball. At least that’s the way it should work. Being tall is a plus for a pitcher. Like with Jon his height means he stands higher on the mound. That makes the angle of the ball as it crosses the plate confusing to the batters and can even throw off their timing. It is also true that being tall enables you to better conceal off-speed pitches. Think about how the larger arm motion is distracting to the batter and will absolutely affect the timing of the swing.

I love pitching :D

Sorry Sonny...I lost track of what you were saying once you said that... :-)

As to the Wilpon press conference, Jeff (who is active in terms of club management) is just as guilty for having indulged Bernazard's behavior for 4 years so he said what he needed to say without further implicating himself. The Mets have a very unprofessional atmosphere. If the Mets spend any money this winter, it should probably be with consultants to help model the business organization after Boston's and creating clear roles and responsibilities. Should there ever be a time that Omar holds a long press conference? That's why Jay Horowitz is there. The VP of Player Personnel should not be allowed to spend any time with the major league club until the minor league seasons are done (let alone an all access pass into the clubhouse and open door policy to the owner). There are so many other examples but my fingers are cramping as it is...

Whoops. Meant VP of Player Development not VP of Player Personnel. Development role is clearly to "Develop" players to reach the majors.

Good post gambit we are for sure on the same page.

Tony B always bugged me with his hanging around the Mets clubhouse, he was a distraction during the Randolph years. Willie complained about Tony’s interfering with him with the some of the players.
I mean it would be one thing if we had a good farm system and tony had been developing guys and making progress in deepining our farm system, but he was not. He did a miserable job in player development, and for that alone should have been replaced. It is very odd to me that The Wilpons allowed this to go on for so long and I thank Adam Rubin for exposing Omar and Tony and bringing all of this out the open.

As for Omar, no that he has embarrassed the Mets and the truth about how he allowed Tony B to run the affiliates into the ground is out in the open I really do believe he will be toast by the end of the year.
I was not fooled or impressed by the whole “vote of confidence: thing he got from the Mets front office, too may people took that to mean that his job was secure. I do not believe that to have been the case then and it certainly is not the case now. A vote of confidence was the nothing more than the Wilpons saying we back up our guy……..for now. It no way suggests to me that it meant any kind of job security. Remember, Willie Randolph got a vote of confidence too, and we all know what happened to him. Expect Omar to be gone next season, prolly before the end of the year.
Wilpon doesn’t want to make any waves right now especially with the Mets playing well. He will wait it out until the Mets season ends.
While I dono how they will handle Minaya’s has a three-year contract extension, Omar will be the next Major League Baseball general manager to be fired.

Encouraging news from Carlos Beltran, he was seen yesterday wearing a knee brace and hitting in the indoor batting cage. Furthering the hope that he could return in a couple of weeks. I had thought he would not be back, those wacky conflicting medical reports were confusing and not very encouraging. It was only just lat week when Beltran said the bone bruise on his knee has not improved, and yet, he has been hitting, throwing and running in a pool and seems to want desperately to get back on the field.
The trouble with that is that the doctor advised Carlos against increasing his workload because the pain and bruise will not go away until he stops activity altogether. Carlos is ignoring that.
Reyes is still looking to return in about two weeks followed by Beltran, Delgado, Wagner and Putz all about the same time.

Lotta baseball today, double header with Santana and Hammel on the mound for the day game and Niese and Jorge De La Rosa pitching the night game.
This is the first time Santana has ever pitched against the Rockies. My only concern is Johan’s fastball which has been very inconsistent. We have seen him throw 88-90 MPH one day and then 93-94 the next which is puzzling to me. The other problem with that is that variation in his fastball speed effects greatly his change up speed, His strike outs have also diminished. Really looking forward to watching him today. I wanna see a more consistent fast ball and relative change up speed today, then I will feel better. Even if he does not yet strike out a lot of guys if he gets that speed under control I will be satisfied.
The Mets offense will have their work cut out for them tonight against De La Rosa, he leads all Major League pitchers with eight wins since June 1. He throws a lot of strikes, with very very few walks.
But even if our boys fail to score too many runs I have confidence in Neise keeping the Rockies off the scoreboard.

Two great games today, and a chance for our boys to make some ground in the wild card.

Just hours away from the trade deadline, which is 4 PM Friday I still don’t expect any big moves by the Mets for all of the reason I have written about already. But we are dealing with Omar who is desperate to get back on the Wilpons and Mets fans good side again. The thing is we have been doing well lately with our Muts, it took a little time but they are clicking now and we can do without a trade and get through till the big boys return.
