New York Mets 2009

A couple of you folks have mentioned about the Mets calling up prospects, well, Wilson Valdez, has reappeared, which tells you where we are at with major league ready talent; not so much in the cupboard. Ike Davis and others are probably at least a year away, which is okay. Josh Thole, a catcher, may be ready for a part time role next year, he's had a terrific year at Binghampton. Get some of the injured guys healed for next year, make some moves for improvement elsewhere, then start reaping the bounty of guys like Ike, Holt, Thole, etc. As for Livan, he's given the Mets about what one would expect, a few good games, some bad ones, and some where he kept the team in the game. He was signed as a fifth starter, not a front of the rotation guy. The sad thing is that there is nobody in sight as an improvement.

Thanks syam....I have heard that Wilmer Flores isn't as universally well thought of as I expected.Appears there are a number of holes and while he may still yet pan out we should definitely not consider him a sure thing.I don't know what to expect of Fernando Martinez....maybe he can develop, but he didn't take the world by storm the first opportunity.Maybe he wasn't ready...maybe not all that as a prospect.Again, who knows?

Davis intrigues me and so does to a little lesser extent Josh Thole.Brad Holt I'm hoping comes around really quick and knocks on the major league door come next September. What about Jesus Mejia? How far apart is he from the majors, and what kind of a realistic impact once here can he be projected to reach?

With very few sure crown jewels in the system, whatever positive news we can get on the farm system front would be most welcome.

i was about to turn off the television tonite, when i decided to stick around for the bottom of the fourth inning. :gogirl::gogirl::gogirl:

that was a lot of fun hammering Lowe, who probably should've had Ollie's spot if Omar had common sense. Oh well, im not as bitter because of the 8 ER in 4.2 innings!!

Go Mets! At least give us some fun games to watch in the meantime till next year starts!

Nice win by the Mets last nite, especially knocking D. Lowe around in the 4th. Nice bullpen work from Dessens in relief of Ollie. As far as some of the prospects go, let's not forget that they are very young, Martinez only 21, Flores still a teen, give them time to mature both physically and mentally, no need to rush them. I think Martinez, after his "cup of coffee" in NY will be better able to handle the majors once he returns. Even Daniel Murphy has only played basically one season, is young and still maturing. Too many people want instant gratification, the Albert Pujols' of the world only come along once in awhile. Let's go Mets!

The priceless moments in last night’s game

David Wright in the dugout again all smiles and laughing

Derek Lowe dripping in sweat during that awesome 4th inning thinking WTF is going on here?

That awesome 4th inning

The ten hits in the fourth inning which is a new Mets record for hits in an inning.

Lowe later in the dugout looking dazed and confused thinking WTF just happened out there

Bobby Cox in the dugout watching Lowe get creamed thinking WTF is going on out there

Perez attempt to cover throw to 1st and Murphy’s smiling are you kiddin me look on his face.

Jeff Francoeur sticking it (with love) to his former teammates

The Mets banging out 17 hits.

A fun game to watch for sure.
Dan, I am as glad as you re you stuck it out.
Syam, you are exactly right about the youth, but it is why I go to the Minor league games to watch those kids scrap and hustle. It is a joy to watch.
Saucy, I dono what you heard aboyt Wilmer Flores but do not believe everying you read or hear. I watched him play Short in Brooklyn and he was awesome, both in defense and offense. He is just a baby, give him time and then sit back and be amased.

Ollie Perez may have hurt his knee on that play to cover first; we will have to s how he feels today.
DL? Well why not; there are more Mets on the DL than are active right now.Perez only walked one and Manual smart enough to pull him as soon as Ollie was eligible for a win.

With Alex Cora on the DL,Wilson Valdez was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo to replace Alex. I wanna see what that kid can do, can’t rely on Anderson. In 35 bats at AAA Valdez was .400

Tonight Parnell will hope to repeat his awesome outing last week aga

So I laughed a lot last night, that’s right Laughed. I mean what else could I do, it was a disaster. Poor Bobby Parnell, the dude can not pitch against left handers and well maybe not so much righties as well
I think what bothered me the most is not so much his lack of control but his reactions which shows him very shook up. Shades of Pelfrey
Look, he’s a kid, he has potential, lots of it. This ain’t Ollie Perez, Bobby is better than that. He will survive. Shake it off Bobby get back on that horse.
What did not help yesterday was the incredibly rookie defense. My GOD, Luis you are supposed to cover second, what were you thinking?!

I am done talking about last night

I complained the other day about the Johan’s reaction to David Wright getting hit in the head. Yeah I know the unwritten rule of baseball yata yata, but I do not condone that behavior AT ALL!
Apparently neither did MLB. Johan has been fined but not suspended for throwing a pitch behind Pablo Sandoval and then hitting Molina.

D Wright will be going back to the Hospital for Special Surgery today for a concussion test, if all goes well he will be cleared to begin physical activity. I am holding my breath today for news of the outcome. David said last night he “felt great”

More on David, the Staten Island (where I was born and raised) little league team recently advanced and is in the little league world series. Apparently David heard about the teams success and sent a note of good luck and said how happy he was for them, David also invited the team to Citi Field.
Our David, he just loves kids, man-oh-man what a great dad he is gonna make some day.

J.J. Putz faced batters Monday in St Luice yesterday and thinks he is ready to advance to minor-league rehab games. I am sure he has Billy Wagner’s return on his mind.

Speaking about Wagner, The Mets placed Billy on trade waivers, that that means is those waivers would expire at 1 p.m. Friday, hours before Wagner is scheduled to be activated
Look at it this way, Billy is due a nearly $3 million this season, no team is likely to claim him so, once he clears, the Mets then have the freedom to trade Wagner to any team they’d like…
But, if Billy is claimed, the Mets will have until next Tuesday to work out a trade with the team who claims him.
Billy made an interesting comment yesterday, he said he is ready and willing to fit in on the roster anywhere the Mets wanna put him this year. “This year” is the important part of that statement. He went on to say that” next year he expects and wants only to close”
Got it Billy.

In case any of you have been wondering, like I have, where the heck is Maine, he throwing but has not returned to a mound. Johnny said his shoulder feels as good as it has in two years. But there is still little hope he will be back this year. More likely The Mets will re-sign the Maine, who is arbitration-eligible, this winter. Then if John is still having problems come spring the Mets can cut him as they did Sanchez. If they do, the Mets will only be responsible for only one-sixth of John’s $2.6 million salary.

Tonight it’s Johan against Kawakami .

A coupe of awesome things happened lat night.

First, Tom ‘The Franchise’ Seaver was in the booth with Gary and Keith and I was in pig heaven. I wish I was around when he pitched, I only have some old videos to show me what a powerhouse he was. My dad called him “Tom terrific” and often tells me stories about that great man. Dad says he is the greatest pitcher to ever wear a Mets uniform.

Next up Billy Wagner, I just got chocked up when that bull pen door opened and he came running out to the cheers of the crowd and “Enter Sandman” blaring. Entrance music for a reliever in the 8th inning, now that’s respect and just plain thrilling. Now him of course Wagner, unlike Seaver, I have seen pitch, he floundered about in the last season but we now know why. Well last night he was “Billy terrific” what a performance, throwing 96 MPH gas and a commanding slider. What is important to remember here that a slider is a breaking ball which puts stress on the elbow, so seeing Billy, after his surgery, throw that pitch with what appeared to be no problem was very encouraging. We will have to wait and see how Billy feels today and tomorrow to be sure he is back to his old self. I think Manual wants to wait two days before using Billy again so we will have to se if that holds true. If he does wait two days that will mean Billy will pitch again on Sunday with Perez getting the start. With Ollie on the mound there is little doubt that Billy will have an opportunity to pitch. Hey, that’s the same day Pedro Martinez pitches for the Phillies. How bout that.

But getting back to Billy and that breaking ball, It also showed his confidence after almost a year in his catcher, cause that pitch does not travel straight like a for example a fastball, it will have some downward motion to it which is more difficult for a catcher cause sometimes the ball will hit the ground before making it to the plate
(I do that on purpose). So Billy had to have trust in his catcher to, if need be, block the ball in the dirt.
Watching Billy was one of the highlights of the year for me, to see him pitch again and so well. I dono how long he will be a Met, as I wrote about yesterday he may or may not be here next year. A lot of teams who would love to have a good lefty closer are going to be interested in Billy. You can believe there were plenty of scouts at Citi last night.

Santana was good last night, he had trouble with the Braves Lefties but as a lefty that is not so unusual, even Santana struggles with the left handed batters. What was important is that even when the Braves hit him Johan never lost it, always staying in control of the game I mean 60 strikes in just under 80 thrown is pretty darn good. He also made some awesome defensive plays as well last night. In fact there were some outstanding defensive plays last night, a welcome change from some other days.I did think Johan’s fastball may have been a little low at times and his velocity was down again The velocity is the only thing I really worry about with Johan as I have written about many times before.

Wacky situation with Sheffield, apparently he went in yesterday and asked for a contract extension, which is odd this time of year. The Mets said no and Gary went into a funk and asked for the day off to “get his head straight” He did pinch hit in a critical time in the game but did not deliver. Now I have not always been a Sheffield fan, I was not happy when he was brought in (neither was Nick Evans) but he has been getting the job done in the field and at the plate I think he has done a great job for us. He needs to chill and not become the pain in the ass he has always been with other teams towards the end. There is no place for that now, Behave dude, be a team player. I know he basically has been a good boy but it looks like that is about to change which what always seems to happen with him.

No new David Wright news, someone I spoke with yesterday said it is still a day to day issue The good news is that David seems to be feeling remarkably well, but that can be misleading, and they will continue to monitor David over the next week to assess his readiness to return. I am of course on top of this keeping up with his progress everyday.

Tonight the Phillies come to town and we will have Pelfrey against Hamels.

After being so great last time,Parnell was brutal the other night....I know he's got great stuff but if I'm correct sonny the problem is developing enough other pitches besides his top notch four seam fastball.Maybe they can send him to Arizona Fall League to work on developing those pitches more.He definitely though needs to work hard to gain the consistency needed to be part of a starting staff.

Didn't see the game because of work last night....appears Johann, while not being overly sharp still pitched well enough to win.Unfortunately the delapidated offense couldn't do much for him.Billy Wagner was magnificent upon his return, looking every bit like someone who could be gold in a contender's bullpen for the stretch drive. Also who could again be a very strong closer again....stuff was really electric for a guy a year removed from serious elbow surgery.

Hoping David Wright is cleared to resume baseball activities and returns from the disabled list after the 14 days.I wholeheartedly agree sonny,David Wright is such a classy guy who gives so much to the community, especially the kids he seems a natural to be a great dad.It appears he should not have the problems returning that can at times plague someone returning from a concussion.Speaking of this, wtf does Jerry Manuel have against Ryan Church?Ryan had very serious complications after his concussion and granted his concussion wasn't a result of being beaned but a head injury playing the outfield.....but he certainly wasn't a dog out there,a lazy whiner and tried to play through his complications. He was the Met MVP of the first two months last season, when we should remermber he was battling to keep the club, which had all of those disabled now healthy and in the lineup but just NOT producing.Ryan loved New York and the fans, just not the reckless way the Mets dealt with his situation(like making him take a cross country flight to be with the team,a no-no for people who had just suffered a serious head injury)And this was his second concussion of his MLB career, which called for being extra precautionary which the Mets organization was mind blowingly not.

Hey saucy, did you read the post I did a few minutes before you last one?
It speaks to some of what you wrote
Hope you had a great birthday babe (*8*)

Aww,thanks sonny(*8*)I did and got a little sidetracked responding to those who posted in the nice birthday thread Scrub!oops!(my favorite Phillie fan, btw;))and I'll get back to everyone.

I'll go back over that one, sonny and give some additional comment to what you had to say.I know it will be spot on...|

The whole Gary Sheffield fiasco gets worse.....the Mets pull him back from waivers earlier in the month and now can't trade him I believe, and get a decent prospect for him....Wtf were they thinking?Being on his best team oriented behavior,Gary was unhappy but assumed that meant at least he was in their plans for next year.....only to be told by Omar Minaya he was definitely NOT in their plans for 2010.So why keep him....why not get something for him as he has played so well a contender would definitely give something of worth for his services the remainder of the season. It's so bush league and incomprehensible....now they'll probably be forced to release him and get NOTHING for him as for all intents and purposes, they've disrespected am lost him now.Anfd this time,Gary has nothing to be sorry about...teams out of the hunt usually trade off still valuable veterans to help build up the organization for the future.Just typical Minaya front office insanity here.....get Omar out now and put the well respected John Riccio in now as Mets GM!

Wow, you guys are diehards.

I live in NY (I'm not a Mets fan) and the local fans have given up on this team over a month ago.

Kudo's to you!

Oh hell,I took a long time to give up on the current squad, but after that five game winning streak last month that gave false hope for a glimmer there may be a turnaround,we started losing again and I was done.David Wright's terrible beaning in a way seemed symbolic for this season....the one Met who hadn't fallen this season goes down for two weeks after the most terrifying thing a baseball player fears occurs....thank God for batting helmets and the fact David seems to be doing so well now.

It doesn't take away from my love and dedication to the Mets,my hopes they can still play well enough to end the season on a hopeful note as we wait on a new opportunity for redemption next spring.Certainly I am fervently hoping that Omar Minaya and his disastrous administration are history very soon and the Mets can move on the field and as an organization to a more cohesive, consistent, winning future.Mets fans deserve that after the debacles starting with our infamous, ignominious historic collapse in September,2007 which Omar Minaya never seemed to take nearly as to heart as he should....not even the ownership and this culture of ennabling Minaya thankfully looks like it's about to come to a welcome end.

That is something I'm sure sonny and all our passionate Mets fans share. But we will NEVER quit on our Mets. All we ask and have every right to expect in return is that the Mets don't quit on us,either.

Yeah saucy after I posted that yesterday more information about Sheffield came along
He never really asked for a contact extension but did want to know what the Mets plans for him are for 2010. He was understandably upset and confused after learning that the Giants offer had been turned down leaving him basically in limbo. To be claimed and then not traded and then find out the Mets have no plans for him had to have pissed him off. The Mets felt that the Giants offer was not going to be enough and that it would be better for the Mets if Gary would finish out the season especially with so many guys out. Omar felt that losing Gary would have been tough to do unless the offer was well worth the while which apparently it wasn’t. But at the same time this was not fair to Gary, after all, now he has no team and nowhere to go in 2010. I am guessing something will come along for him next year, which is why he needs to act more professionally. The Mets pretty much fucked him over, but people will be watching, as everyone knows Gary can be very difficult in theses types of situations He has a history or that. So the first thing he can do for himself is not act the primadonna. Yesterday Gary said he had thought it through and decided to be a team player and finish the season with the Mets. But I am not believing that, not coming from hm. Look at what he did yesterday, in three at bats he struck out with the bases loaded, hit into a double play and then struck out again. After the last strike out he acted the child slammed down his bat and got ejected. Way to make a good impression there Gary. The Mets will prolly come out the losers here cutting him and ending up with nothing.

File this under, that was quick, Yesterday Billy Wagner was claimed by what appears to be the Boston Red Sox who claimed him off waivers yesterday.
The Mets can either work out a trade with the Sox, allow Wagner to leave without getting anything in return or pull Wagner off waivers. The Mets have until Tuesday afternoon to work out a trade. If they do not, the Mets would either have to let Wagner be claimed without receiving compensation or pull him off waivers, after which they would be unable to trade him.
I am saying “appears to be” cause I have not heard anything official and in fact Wagner said he hadn't heard anything about the waiver claim.
I support moving Billy; the Guy wants to be a closer, he will not return to the Mets in any other slot. K-Rod ain’t goin anywhere and even if Billy where to settle for the 8th spot (and he would not) JJ is coming back in 2010. So this would be good for Billy and depending on the deal good for the Mets as well.
We will all know in the next three days.

Now on to last night’s game
Pelf showed a lot of aggression last night and has finally developed more movement on his sinker was able to move away from the left handed hitters and pounding them. Once again he was able to skillfully mix his pitches and expand the zone; I especially like watching him move batters off the plate. But he also showed that thing he does when ever there is a runner on base, it makes him uneasy and he gets stressed out. He still seems to have trouble throwing from the stretch which with a man on has to do. I don’t get it he does it every time it drives me nutz.](*,)
Ya hadda love how he pitched out of that sixth inning with the bases juiced Pelf beat Francisco and Rollins.
See kids that’s now it’s done. :=D:
I liked the glare he gave to Hamels after getting hit by that pitch, but Cole of course did not do anything intentionally, I mean why would he want to give the opposing pitcher a free pass to first base, it just makes no sense, Mike was 0-2 when he got hit. But I liked Pelfs reaction. Although the home plate umpire did come out to the mound at the start of the next inning to kinda give Pelf a “come on now behave talk” but I still would have enjoyed maybe give Cole a little brush s back when he came up to bat.
So it’s back to back wins for Big Pelf, I am encouraged.
Oh, and by the way Cole, who’s the “choke artists” now and how many times have w beat you now punk. :p

The bullpen was awesome, fortunately Redding did not pitch. Of course Frankie had to give us some drama, but how about Pedro Felliciano and Brian Stokes who were just magnificent. Feliciano has become an outstanding setup man, that changeup is Nasty with a capital N.

Another ridicules bad call by an umpire last night, Second base umpire called Franciour out on a stolen base attempt; even though the tag was never made (not even close) he got called out. You could see Jeff’s lips saying “He never touched me” I was glad to see manual go out there and give the ump the business I did not even mind that he got ejected, it was the right thing to do, I was proud of him. Jeff was safe, every fan in the stands saw it, as witnessed by the loud boos, every player saw that, only the ump did not see it. What an idiot.

I want to ad to saucys comment about the post made by Rimmer, first of all thanks for that post, Yup, we are die hard fans, when we are in the position we are in with all of our core players out you have to support the irregulars who are playing their hearts out and trying to win games. Theses guys are hungry and trying to prove themselves. We gotta support that, Even if/when it becomes mathematically impossible for us to win anything there will still be a lot of fun baseball to watch. The reason for that is we become the spoilers; our job will be to fuck with every team in the NL East, making em sweat and making the battle even harder. Especially the Marlins, we have to fuck them up good, they have it coming.

Tonight it’s Redding, who will fill in the spot left by Ivan, against Happ.
I worry that Redding will be no match for those Phillies batters, they will eat him alive. I hope I am wrong and pleasantly surprised, I’m just sayin

I did not see the game live yesterday I only watched the outstanding ’69 Mets show and then went out and was busy getting busy, ya know what I’m sayin ;)
But I saw most of the game this morning and Redding was pretty darn good, I was pleasantly surprised. He can’t go deep yet went 81 pitches and seemed to tire out. Gee, even in little league I was allowed 85 pitches, but his performance yesterday was very encouraging.

What a great year Luis Castillo is having.

And is anyone having more than fun than Jeff franciour?

Most improved player? Well with an eight game hitting streak and impressive first base plays it’s Gotta be Daniel (the Irish Hammer) Murphy. My man Brandon Tierney gave Murph that name. ;)

More encouraging news on DWright, Jerry Manuel said he expects David to come off the disabled list as soon as he is eligible to do so September 1st at Colorado. Wright has been cleared by doctors to resume light physical activity. "He seems to be doing extremely well," Manuel said.
CLEARED TO RESUME LIGHT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY ..|:=D:

JJ Putz is also expected to be back with the team on Sept 1st in Colorado.
I will be going to see JJ pitch in Brooklyn Tuesday when the Cyclones play the Vermont Lake Monsters, I will let you guys know how he looks. Maybe get to meet and speak with him.

With the expanded rooster in September, we can expect to se guys like Josh Thole, Eddie Kunz and maybe even Nick Evens brought up. We need Thole, cause Schneider is clearly gone cold and in fact is now batting .182, while Thole is now at .322. Evans has improved his game and is now hitting .282 in Buffalo. and of course I would love to se Kunz back up.

Today should be a lot of fun, Pedro pitches for the Phillies, and it will be good to see him again. He has been pitching well but has only pitched twice; I will be interested in seeing if he still has anything left in the tank. Hey Mets fans at Citi Field, lets give Pedro a big NY welcome today :D We have Ollie Perez on the mound and of course anything can happen. But with Pelfrey and Redding turning in great starts what we need now is for Ollie to do the same. Wagner will prolly be in the game today as well.

Jeff Francoeur said it best “That’s some shit, is all I can say”
That unassisted triple play in he 9th to end yesterdays game was the craziest thing I have ever seen in a baseball game. A thing like that could only happen to the Mets, am I Right saucy? (saucy has said that)
I mean there we were bottom of the ninth, down two runs with no outs with two men on, you gotta think, hey we got a real shot at this. Then KABOOM it happened. Poor Jeff Francoeur hit a shot right to the second baseman and next thing you know…. the game was over. :help:

There were four of us guys watching yesterday’s game, we were supposed to play yesterday but got postponed, so we thought. Let’s watch the Mets game. Well when that triple play happened we all just looked at one another, then one of the boys said, " WTF just happened". At that point I just broke down in a fit of laughing; I mean I was bustin a gut. Come on, what else could you do. I mean it was hilarious. Maybe at a time when we were in contention for something and the game was really important I might have reacted differently. But given the circumstances we are in now I just could not help but thinking, this could only happen to the Mets and crack up. Soon all the boys were laughing cause I mean it was just too funny. I called my dad and asked “did you see that”, I kid you not he was laughing too.

There was a lot of humor in yesterdays game, like when Pagan ripped a ball in the gap that got stuck under the padding on the outfield wall and Shane Victorino thought it was a ground-rule double, but only it wasn’t’. By the time Shane got clued in Pagan scored for an inside-the-park home run. Hilarious.
Is it any wonder why I love baseball.

Then here was that poor sap Ollie Perez who was worse than terrible, pathetic is more like it. Six runs in the first inning, including two three-run home runs. He looked completely clueless, confused and hopeless. Good GOD, WTF are we gonna do with this guy, we have ho for two more years.
Time for him to go to the Bull Pen and sit, don’t pitch, Don’t even warm up, just sit.
Seriously Ollie, 47 pitches in two thirds of an inning? Then you get a 3-0 count on the pitcher Pedro? Manual nearly fell off the upper steps racing to the mound to stop him from throwing (yup throwing not pitching) any more balls.
But lets not let all that get in the way of the fact that the Mets scrapped and fought throughout that game and did come back a couple of times, it was a fun Game, just very strange and very funny.

Gotta mention the great outing from Misch, his 4 scoreless innings were a breath of fresh air. Nice job!

Billy Wagner did not pitch, prolly will today. As you know, the Red Sox put in a claim on him and have until tomorrow to trade him to Boston, release him, or pull him off waivers and keep him.
But reports last night are suggesting that the Red Sox’s chances of landing Wagner are in serious trouble. We have heard Billy say that he would waive his no-trade clause, but what he is saying to Boston is that they must guarantee him they will not pick up the $8 million option on his current contract for next season. See, that would allow him to sign as a closer with a new team, which is what Billy wants to do, which is close, he does not want to remain in Boston as a set-up man. But wait there is more, Wagner has also asked that the Sox to not offer him salary arbitration, that way he will be more attractive to a new team in the off-season, Oh Billy you crafty devil you. Now it gets more interesting for Omar, cause if he isn’t able to get a package from the Red Sox, which is better than what he believes he can draft with the two compensatory draft picks he is likely to get when Wagner signs with a new team this winter, he prolly will wanna keep Wagner now and not trade him to Boston. Are ya with me so far???
I think the Red Sox want Wagner, but with this new wrinkle will they may not wanna giving up any prospects if there is a chance Billy can just take a hike at the end of the season. Which is a real possibility.
On man *rubs hands together* I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I mentioned yesterday that D Wright was given the go ahead to begin physical activity. Well now it got better, he will today or at the latest tomorrow begin doing baseball drills. Friday he did work on an elliptical machine and a stationary bike and now has been cleared to run outside. The best new is that after the activities he has started he is still feeling great. David is expected to move on to taking swings off a tee. David is officially scheduled to play next week in Colorado.
I get chocked up when ever someone calls or sends me new info on how David is doing. I have got everyone in baseball I know keeping me up to date. Can’t wait till September first when I see him take the field.

Today it’s Bobby Parnell against Cliff Lee

I didn't see the game yesterday, just the "highlights", what a bizarre game, and that term has been used too often this season with the Mets. Ending a game on an unassisted triple play, who'd a thunk it. Glad to see they fought back after Ollie put 'em in a hole. If the Sawx won't give up a decent prospect or a young player currently on the roster for Wagner, then screw 'em, keep him. and let him become a free agent and take the draft picks.

The Mets injuries just keep on a comin
Late today Johan Santana was pulled from tomorrows start. He has discomfort in his left elbow and will see the doctor on Tuesday morning. Johan has had this discomfort since the All Star break but fought through it. Now he has said it is not getting any better and it is time to have it checked out. I have noticed a drop in his velocity and he has not pitched as well in the second half as is his MO. It may not be anything to be alarmed about yet but the fact that Johan asked to see a doctor is very telling. Johan is a bull he would not allow anything to keep him from pitching so this can’t be good. I wanna think that he is doing it not because the pain is so bad but rather because he knows he has not been pitching as well as he should and wants to fix that. We should know more tomorrow, all we can do is wait and hope for the best.

As if that were not enough, Jeff Francouir injured his left thumb yesterday and today was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his left thumb. (He throws righty) Jeff will play as did Cora when he had a similar injury. The Mets will have to watch him closely to see if the injury affects his swing. The doctors have said that playing will not make the injury worse but I hope Jeff and the Mets are careful not to let the same thing that happened with Cora happen again. So expect Jeff in the game tomorrow we will se how he handles the bat. Figueroa will get the start for Santana

I’m tellin you guys the Mets are cursed

not sure what is worse .........

losing out the last 2 years at the finish line - lamenting lost opps

or realizing that the team now is irrelevant

and playing out the string

what is worse?

IMO this is much worse

So we wait and worry while Santana gets checked out by the doctor today. As I posted yesterday he has been feeling more discomfort the last few days and in fact has not thrown a ball since his last start. We are also hearing that he has not has not thrown between starts in a while now. That in it self although unusual is not alarming but it does add to the speculation that he is hurting. When I spoke to my dad last night he said “I have two words for you, Tommy Johns”
Oh man I hope not cause that would mean he would be lost for most if not all of 2010. He already had an MRI which was negative; we can only hope it’s not that serious. But with the luck going the way the Mets have lately….well, the odds for good news are not that good.
The Mets have said the doctors will decide if Santana pitches again this season.

I wrote about how impressed I was with Pat Misch going four scoreless innings the other day. So what do the Mets do? They sent him back to AAA Buffalo and called up the 40 year old reliever Ken Takahashi.

More on the story I wrote yesterday about Billy Wagner, who does not want the Red Sox to offer him salary arbitration. But isn’t that what will happen with the Mets if he stays? Anyways now he has blocked the trade using the no-trade clause in his contract. Billy was on his game for a second time yesterday throwing a hitless eighth inning. Seeing him pitch yesterday releaved my mind a bit about Billy cause
I wondered why he didn’t Billy pitch over the weekend against the heavy lefty hitting Phillies? He did warm up but never got the call. Manual said it was because it wasn’t a close game and decided to “save him” for another day. BUT, what if he had trouble with his warm up, or he was having some kind of problem. That opens a whole other can of worms cause if that was the case than the Mets by rule have to withdraw him from waivers. He has to be pulled. I’m just askin
We will know early this afternoon what comes next cause the deadline is 1PM today.
Expect Billy to be in Florida today when the Mets play the Marlins
I guess we know now how Billy would react to being sent to Boston for nothing, in an effort to save the full $3.5 million on his contract, which Billy must approve before it can happen. Soooo much drama, including the war of words between Wagner and Papelbon ….stay tuned.

Tonight it’s Figueroa who will pitch in Santana’s spot against Sean West

David Wright will not be making the rip to Florida or Chicago. His rehab work is going very well and it would be better for him to continue that in preparation for his Sept 1st return than go to Florida and sit in the dugout. David has had enough of that thank you very much and is very much enjoying working on his return. He’s havin fun again.
Here is a couple of pictures of David in the dugout unable to play but giving support to the team, and also of David working on his rehab program.
