New York Mets 2010

Along the great news about Ike in his regular season MLB debut,,some more developments also worth talking about:

Jon Niese was very impressive yesterday, not sharp but confident and able to make big pitches to avoid trouble. And even more impressive,he mixed his pitches masterfully to keep Chicago off stride. He is growing ever confident in his repertoire of pitches.5 and two thirds innings allowing just one run despite allowing eight hits.

Tonight,Mike Pelfrey continues his welcome, surprising return to the promise of his rookie year, shutting out the Cubs over 7 innings allowing just three hits.Mets beat Cubbies 4-0.Another case of developing secondary pitches to becoming deadly weapons in his arsenal.,Mike now has shut out the opposition 19 straight innings!

Jose Reyes finally broke out tonight, four hits including a clutch two run triple,,stole a base and looked every bit the dynamic offensive force that drives the Mets. His return to form after missing additional time this spring to a thyroid problem has been slow but hopefully tonight's breakout performance helps give him some confidence he's about ready to start the Mets engines again.

Big two run home runs....last night by Angel Pagan to give the Mets breathing room 3-1 over the Cubs(eventually winning 6-1)...another tonight by pinch hitter Fernando Tatis.Coming at the right times, after last year's relative power shortage at CitiField these homers have been energized the Mets, raised their confidence level. They can be momentum builders and changers and the Mets have used them to their advantage so far.

Funny thing Saucy I was going to jump in here today and write about the same thoughts you did yesterday.
Two brilliant minds think alike I guess. ;)

A couple of things have happened the last couple of days that give me hope. Fist of all has to be Mike Pelfrey, Pelf allowed no runs on 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 6 in his 7innings pitched. But the best news is he has for sure found an offspeed pitch to compliment the fastball. He is changing speeds and the split finger that he’s throwing now is completely working for him. . His fastball was topping out at 94 mph and, more importantly, his off-speed stuff was effective. I have always thought Mike relied heavily on his fastball so watching him mix in the splitter, changeup and even the occasional curveball was great to wee. All of this has to be building his confidence, which I think will push his performance to another level. His ERA is down to 0.86

Next is Jose Reyes, I have been a bit worried about that kid cause he just was not the same ole Jose. He was struggling at the plate, not really running as well as he did and basically his timing was off, just was not right. But I wanted to be patient; after all he had little to no spring training.
Well yesterday it happened he went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI and a triple. Welcome back Jose we missed ya dude.

Then three is Angel Pagan who has been doing it all and doing it well. No more goofy base running and loss of direction (which base do I throw to?) All that has disappeared and he is playing spectacular outfield and getting good at bats as well. Just hope they play him every day and let Matthews sit.

Ike Davis is here and the whole clubhouse has just come to life, he brings new hope to the team and adds a spark we really needed. What this means for Murphy is sorta up to what Davis does. So how does Murphy feel about Ike? Well he very candidly said that Davis is the best option at first base right now. Daniel; also said he would readily accept a lower-profile role once his rehab is complete. Murphy’s rehab is coming along but slower than he thought and any pain he has is completely tolerable. He understands that The Mets don't want him to come back until it feels the way it's supposed to. He also said that every day it gets better. There are no sharp pains just kind of a dull stretching of his knee. Murph had a very good workout on Monday, taking ground balls and able to go side to side completely pain-free. He understand the possibility of losing the first base job to Davis, he fells although he can accept that and wants to concentrate on putting “more bullets in my gun. He knows if he is able to play other positions, it gives Manual more flexibility. Maybe even a few more at-bats.
How can you not love a kid like that? :D
As for Davis, he has complimented Murphy's treatment of him during spring training. He said the relationship wasn't uncomfortable, in fact Murphy showed Ike around telling him what he needed to do, where I needed to be, "It's never really been awkward."

Now we come to Jason Bay and David Wright who have been struggling at the plate. I dono when Bay is gonna break out but I am getting a bit tired of waiting, so far he is a bust, but on the positive side has been outstanding in left field. Wright is lost at the plate again, he is back to chasing pitches low/away in the zone, and he does not seem to be able to lay off the slider away. His batting stance seems to change with each at bat. Is it me or is he more crouched than he once was, his hands are lower in his stance, and there is a lot of movement in the box But I gotta believe that both Wright and Bay will come around.

On the injury front, Beltran has not been cleared for baseball activities after his visit with doctors in Colorado this week. This can’t be good, like a lot of you I kept wondering why he hasn’t made any progress, and this news has me worried about him.
Igarashi strained his left hamstring, and will have an MRI on Wednesday.

In case any of you guys missed this

Now all Frenchy has to do is take his light, low key approach to his at bats, sonny!Great link showing Ike almost having eyes in the back of his head knowing Jeff was going to get him!;)

Thanks for the nice words about my post sonny but I just wanted,as you do,to show that Ike,while potentially very important to the Mets's future success is nly but a part of it.He isn't going to turn things around just by himself being there...as tonight's loss top the Cubs demonstrated, the Mets still have a lot of flaws to work through. The lack of command by Ollie Perez(no surprise there, how long could he pitch efficiently?) and the relief staff allowing so many walks and giving the Cubs an easier route to victory...nothing like the previous two nights of tough staring and relief efforts that left Chicago's offense flustered and flailing.

And Jeff Francouer who was scorching to start the season is now slumping terribly, what is he now....0-22?He has got to relax, take his low key approach to the plate as I mentioned and not press.Bay's not there yet,David Wright is also off his game....they were talking about it and sonny I'm sure has been noticing what he is doing wrong as well, with his knowledge of the technical, mechanical parts of the game.Ike struck out in the eighth facing a lefty, probably trying to do a little too much. The Mets starting staff, especially with Mike Pelfrey and Jon Niese have shown strong improvement and give a basis that the staff could be really competitive this year. But now the offense has to get into some kind of flow, where there is more balance and where if some aren't hitting, they're taking walks, being patient and moving runners along and others are picking up the slack.

It's not losing, that's gonna happen even to the best teams...it's how you play and how you keep fighting and not make it easy for the opposition.Tonight was a regression but tomorrow let it be forgotten and just take a smarter, more aggressive approach.

I do have to mention that Ike had his first highlight defensively at first, sure sonny can get the video link.;)

.....and he sticks the landing! Great effort. Not so much by the offense last nite. I guess the pitching was due for a "stinker", the bullpen has been outstanding of late, so will just mark this one as an off nite. Still need the hitters to get going, hopefully today's the day. Let's go Mets!!

Ike is adjusting well to the big leagues, what is especially important his 3-4 day yesterday is the fact that 2 of those hits were against lefties. Ike would tell you one of his biggest goals was to the problem he had hitting lefties, he had been working hard in AAA to conquer that. Besides the hits yesterday half of all his hits in the majors have been against a lefty, looks like mission accomplished to me
Take notice and you can see it when he stands in the box against lefties, he is now a middle of the plate in hitter as opposed to when he hits righties where he covers the outside of the plate. Yup, he has it all figured out. Pitchers know what a challenge he is and so he sees a lot of pitches away.
Ike is on his way to becoming very dangerous to pitchers who pitch to him down and in, make that mistake and they will pay.
Ike has been destined to be a major baseball player, as far back as when he was a toddler he would take a saran wrap tube and use it for a bat. Yup, this kid is going to be a superstar.

Congrats to D Wright on his double yesterday which tied him for the club record of 225

Tonight we go against Atlanta; I am really looking forward to seeing that new kid Jason Heyward.
The Braves rookie has been tearing it up. I wonder how Maine will pitch to him.

Jose Reyes will bat third in the lineup against the Braves this weekend.

Pigging out the next coupe days on baseball, today we head on out to Citi field and Sunday its open house in Brooklyn where the Cyclones will host an Open House at MCU Park.

Was nice to see a couple of clutch hits last nite, a break on the error by the Cubs 2B certainly helped. Great job by KRod to finish it out. What I like about Ike's hitting is that he goes to all fields, some to right, some up the middle and some the other way, like his double to the left center gap. Glad to see D Wright get that double and knock in a run, hopefully he'll be a bit less anxious at the plate and lay off the down and away sliders. I know he feels like he has to carry this team with the huge slump by many players, but let the game come to you. Need to see some hitting from Jason BAy!! Let's go MEts!!

I had a feeling sonny would love that defensive gem!Ike's pretty coordinated for a big guy....he only has average speed, but he could have made a solid corner outfielder with his arm and instincts. He's going to develop into one of the best defensive first basemen, maybe Gold Glove caliber in time. The great thing about him is how he takes pride in his defense as much as his offense.

Jerry thought about a shakeup but decided to hold off,as Johann was pitching and it turned out to be a good call not panicking but showing patience.I loved that description about Ollie:lol:,it's spot on!He'll tease and he'll give you a tightrope effort which he bends a lot but doesn't break....but his lack of command is so damn frustrating.

And yep,we've got top get a consistency to the efforts...too often the pitching and offense don't work in synch.

Ike is incredibly mature for his age,not only being the son of a big leaguer(reliever Ron Davis, had some great years with the Yankees)but being taught well and having terrific instincts and ability. He works very hard to get to being where he is,and he wants to prove those who doubt his ability to hit lefties(with whom he did have some problems but mostly just needed to make adjustments, which sonny notes so well)and he is showing results.

His dad Ron actually considers Ike to resemble most John Olerud, like Ike a tall, lanky lefty with a sweet swing that while capable of 20+ homers, was a tremendous doubles machine(500+ in his career,as opposed to 255 home runs who was also an outstanding defensive first baseman.I like the comparison but see Ike eventually capable of 30-40 homers to go with forty or so doubles a year.He has to keep working and making adjustments but his makeup suggests a very willing, dedicated baseball player...which as sonny pointed out, started almost as soon as Ike could walk!;)

Yep,congrats David on that milestone,225 doubles...he'll have maybe triple that when he retires.A great record for Ike to shoot for!;)

Jason looks like the real deal,a physical apeciman at 6'5,240 who shows marvelous offensive and defensive skills, and incredible power potential,A rookie to keep an eye on trying to get Atlanta back on the winning track.

I think Jose will do really well batting third, certainly he seems to be excited by the challenge and ready to show a more consistent, dynamic Jose...if Angel Pagan keeps playing well especially setting the table at leadoff, this could prove a very dynamic move for the offense overall.

Have a great time at the game tonight sonny and enjoy the Open House with the Cyclones in Brooklyn Sunday...sounds like a wonderful baseball weekend!..|

Yep syam,K-Rod did a great job getting the last five outs....the best closers in the past would fairly routinely go the last two innings when they had to,rarely seen today in the age of the eighth inning set up man.Good to see him enjoy the challenge and put the kibbosh to any thoughts of a Cubs rally.

Clutch hits, timely hits, getting breaks, solid pitching(by Santana and K-Rod,at least)...that's what marks a good, strong contending club.Great to see it last night and the first two games of the series, and hopefully it leads the Mets to playing better, more consistent ball.

I agree,David just has to let his talent take over and not put undo pressures when Bay and Francouer are struggling.Happy that Francouer got a big hit and RBI and just has to believe the positive results since he came to the Mets from Atlanta are more of what he is capable of.Atlanta gave up on him, questioned his toughness and makeup but I think he was being pulled in so many directions that he was totally screwed up especially at the plate and the Mets believed in his talent and potential...now he is in a far better environment to build up his game.He already has the positive clubhouse presence, just needs to work to maximizing that combination of stellar defense and potent power bat.

Ike has been amazing, and that he is a smart hitter that will go to all fields makes him potentially such a dangerous bat ...he will make adjustments, and that is the sign at his young age of someone who knows he wants to get the best out of his talent and work at it.He looks to be someone with a professional, mature approach.

Needless to say, let's get going Jason Bay!;)Though I think he'll be all right once he eases out of his funk. He's another guy with an even keeled, professional approach to things so I'm not worried about him.

I swear,I didn't even look at the score updates in tonight's game, didn't tune in and find out until late ...but I'm so glad for tonight's effort!

Just hope John Maine is okay....even though it appears his problem was with his non pitching elbow, and not too serious...the guy's been so snakebit and been through so much can't help but feeling for him.

But I'm certain that some real good stuff from tonight's game will be posted later today!A very happy recap on a number of fronts, especially someone launching one huge moonshot to right center!;)

Congrats Mets fan!!!
Ike Davis getting his first home run . way to go IKE!!!

It's always great to beat the Braves!! Congrats to Ike on HR #1!! A nice effort by all last nite, Takahashi out of the pen, some clutch hits by Reyes, Bay, Wright, Ike. Baserunning that actually helped us instead of killing us, and by Pagan no less! Good to see other teams screw up instead the Mets. Let's hope that we're onto a good streak and the hitters are coming around. I'm kinda befuddled on the Maine injury, how the left arm got injured, and how it would cause him to want to come out of a game? I'm wondering if Johnny is just becoming a "head" case. Anyway, a very good nite. Let's go Mets!!

An awesome night at Citi last night, the boys and me had a great time. It was Ski cap night, got my cap.
John Maine had a better start than he has had although his delivery still seems to be kinda flat, and somehow different, a shorter stride maybe, not sure just different. And his velocity on his fastball which was up at first but then began to drop. When he faced Heyward you could really see his fastball speed falling, I swear it looked like 80 MPH. It turned out he was feeling spasms and pain in his left elbow. A couple of batters later Manual and the trainer came out to the mound and Maine was done. What I was told later was that John was unable to generate power because his left arm kept him from making his delivery. He had spasms in his left elbow and couldn’t bring his arm down, it petty much just got stuck and he had trouble throwing. Actually this has happened to Maine before I think it was in ’08, that time he missed at least one start and then was ok again. Lets all hope that’s all it is this time, poor kid just can’t cut a break. I loved that he owned Jason Heyward last night that was fun to see. I even saw a sign that read "Who’s your daddy" directed at Heyward. Jason was underwhelming going 0-4. It broke my heart to see Johnny leave the game after just 3 2/3 innings.
But the night was saved by an outstanding performance by Yakahashi

Of course the highlight of the game had to be Ike Davis and that 450 foot shot his first major league homer, the crowd went nutz chanting "We like Ike” and it just sent chills through my whole body, Awesome!

The other fun chant was for Chipper Jones, of course we boo him when he comes to the plate that’s just a given, but yesterday we had a lot more fun when he dropped that ball to make his second error of the game. CHIPPPPPPPPER was rocking the park. Very fun.
Speaking of that, how did that mix up happen? Reyes hit a fly ball and the umpires called the infield fly rule making Jose out. But when the ball is dropped, as it was last night, the runners can advance, they don’t even have to tag up. So WTF where the Braves thinking. Hey Bobby Cox, I think your team needs to refresh them selves on the In-field fly ball rule. What a bunch of numb nutz.
In fact, The Braves committed four errors last night. Can I get a chop chop.
Speaking of Reyes, he seemed to be just fine in that three hole, 2 for 3 with a double and a triple with a run scored. He must even loved that out he made on the fly ball that went so badly for the Braves. As a matter of fact I think all of the changes went well (see, I told you Manual, was gonna shake it up);) the offense came somewhat alive maybe we will see more of that this weekend. Even Bay got a hit, and the crowd cheered, even though it may have been, at least with me it was, sarcasm.

All in all, a good weekend for the Mets. The starting pitching is holding up very well, nice bullpen work, and the offense....it's still offensive. A sweep of the Braves nonetheless is great! Pelfrey walked a tightrope all nite last nite, but came out of it just fine. Now let's take care of the Dodgers, their bats are struggling too. Let's go Mets!!

Yup Syam Mike Pelfrey did not pitch all that well, especially with that high pitch count of over 100 through five, 70 of em in just the first three, but he did throw 60 shrikes. His command was not as good as it was in last couple of starts, he walked five. But I liked the way he battled and left stranded a bunch of Braves. Last year with all of those guys on base Mike would have had a meltdown but Blanco was there for him keeping Mike calm allowing him got the job done and out of trouble. Now while I am not happy about the men he allowed on base I am very happy to see him handle it so well, a big step for Pelf .I sure love his 4-0 and 0.69 ERA, he is tied for the league-lead in wins and he has the best ERA in all of baseball.

John Maine says he is good to go on his next start and has had no pain in that elbow, I dono, I have to see that to stop worrying about him. If John has problems again we need to start thinking about replacing him, I mean enough is enough. I wanna see us bring up a guy like Dicky who is down in AAA I have seen him pitch many times in Brooklyn and also recently in Buffalo and I love this kids stuff He’s had no problem going deep into games with an average of 7.1 innings per outing. I usually don’t care for knuckleballer’s but I have had this kid on my radar for while now.

Mike Jacobs has been added to the Buffalo Bisons active roster.

I want to send put a special thanks to Chipper Jones and that throwing error that ultimately gave us the win in that rain shortened game yesterday, thanks Chipper:p

Looking forward to our series with the Dodgers starting tonight. That outstanding team is off to a not so outstanding start and it would be a great time for us to take advantage of their offense which is not hitting all that well. Another advantage for us is Manny Ramirez, who was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a strained right calf and who will not be playing in the series.

Just a thought I've had about the Mets pitching, I wonder how much of the improvements might be due to the new catchers this year. I'm never sure how much credit to give them on how they handle the pitch calling, working with the pitchers, etc. I have to think it is more than a coincidence that the starters are pitching pretty well, and so are the relievers. Blanco and Barajas seem to have the confidence of the pitchers at a high level.

Hey,our first series sweep!:DOkay,it was helpful too that A.The game was rain shortened
B. Chipper Jones didn't play too "chipper" in the series, and has been making up to the Mets for all the heartbreak he has given them in the past;)

Yep,Mike Pelfrey didn't pitch well relatively speaking, but he like you said sonny was able to battle his way through five not giving up any runs.Too many pitches and you don't want him to make a habit out of that(same for Jon Niese Saturday, not very good command but tough and determined)and maybe a big part of that are Rod Barajas and Henry Blanco and their ability to work with pitchers.Mike not only has that sparkling ERA and win numbers, but now has a 24 inning scoreless streak.Who would have thought, with his uneven spring training and his meltdown last year,Mike Pelfrey would be among the best starters in baseball in the early going of 2010?Whatever has got you going Mike, keep it going!..|

John Maine says he's ready to go for his next start, but that left elbow injury was odd(I know two years ago he had a similar experience with his left elbow, muscle spasms and it effecting his whole motion and all that)and who's to say it can't recur?I really wish the best for him with all the woes he's been through but he has to produce,or the Mets may have to look at an intriguing inside option like Dickey(I remember sonny recently raving about this guy)and that knuckleball of his.

I hope sonny eases a bit on his sarcasm on poor Jason Bay;)Seriously,I do think he is coming around....I do think Jose Reyes looking good in the third spot could be very crucial for Bay's production as he will have to see more fastballs as Reyes will keep pitchers and defenses on their toes.It may really be a good idea....if Angel Pagan produces like last season leading off,and Jose continues to excel getting comfortable batting third, this could help deepen a very interesting lineup. We have to get David Wright "right" again though...whatever is causing his slump(punctuated by his starting to get alarming strike out rate)is probably much more psychological than physical, but he cannot keep allowing that to play with his head.I know he hears the boos, and everything he's given the Mets I don't think anyone believes he deserves it,but fans will warm up again when the production returns and David knows the deal about how things are played in New York.He loves it here and he loves and appreciates the fans, and understands their passion, good and bad...but he's got to clear his head and start fresh and get going again. He's got to relax and not let it build too much.

My biggest concern is Wright on the delcine. From a psychical standpoint at 27 he's fine, but players lose their skills at different times. But actually my biggest fear is David is a player that needs a change to regain his form.

I'm very worried about him right now.

Loved the last start by Big Pelf. He didn't have his best stuff and battled through it. Last year it would have been ugly.

I like Maine, but I think injuries took their toll and mentally he's shot. If by some chance he's out of the rotation. Forget Dickey. He's not very good I say give the kid Dillon Gee a chance. Time is now to give it up for the younger players mixed in with vetrans.

Actually there is a Mets fans site,Hot Foot.com(named after the notorious prankish"hot foots" reliever Roger McDowell would administer back in the days of the contending Mets teams of the mid-late 80's)that diagrammed the various stances David has employed between his outstanding 2008 campaign through today. He seems to have dramatically changed his stances and the slump, which I thought earlier was more a psychological thing but just having reading it there may be a mechanical component to his slump as well...his swing looked good in spring training and despite his strikeouts and inconsistency last year still managed to hit .307.I am concerned about David right now as well but don't believe his skills are starting to fade.He does have to get a handle though on things and make the necessary psychological and mechanical adjustments to return to being one of the best of the game.

Sonny has seen Dickey and knows about him,as well as having knowledge on Dillon Gee.Dickey may be useful as a swing guy,Gee I'm not as sure about but sonny follows the progress of the minor leaguers with great interest and knows his stuff so on Dickey maybe he has some additional comments on why he might make sense for the club.

Pelf's mentality is MUCH better this year, even when he has to battle and doesn't have the best stuff or command like Sunday night.Yep.last year the first sign of trouble there would have been a train wreck. That he can remain confident, tough and focused even struggling is a very hopeful, positive sign for him and the Mets this year.

Well, after the postponement of Monday night's game against the Manny Ramirez-less LA Dodgers,we get a good old fashioned doubleheader(no lame ass day night, charge two admissions split crap, thankfully!)and hopefully the rainout won't slow down the momentum of the sweep of the Braves over the weekend.
