New York Mets 2012

Saw the Mets in a boring night game with Atlanta Braves this past Friday night. Man, the backsides of their outfielders.....hot and muscular. When I was a kid, I had a crush on Bobby Valentine.

Yay!! They closed it out with a victory, some nice pitching from Hefner, and the long balls from Ike and company. 2013 baseball season won't get here soon enough.

Once again, THanks!! for a superb job by Sonny for the updates and such, and Sausy with his timely inputs, helps make the season more enjoyable to commiserate with fellow Mets fans. Looking forward to the "Hot Stove" thread.

Thanks Syam for the kind words I appreciate it.

Yup I too and looking forward to Burhardt’s Hot Stove return in November, it’s like I told him it is the bridge that gets us thru the long winter to spring training. Mets pitchers and catchers report to Port St. Lucie, Fla. Feb. 13. Position players report five days later. The first Grapefruit League game televised by SNY will be Feb. 23 which is early this year so we will see more games, gotta love that.

The Mets season may be over but I will be very involved with some of the guys over the winter, I will spend time with Murph we have a couple of golf games set up and then I will be at spring training most of March so I should have plenty to tell you guys in my Mets winter thread which I will start up in a few days. So if you want to know what the guys are up to this winter as well as the latest info I have on trades and such that will be the place to be. I have plans to go out to Arizona to Ike’s and spend some time in the Arizona league checking in on what is happening there I will also visit with Thole who will be training very hard this year to get ready for 2013. Josh was disappointed in his season and is determined to get back on track and return strong. He will be training in Arizona but will also be going to Denver to spend time with his buddy Todd Helton , Todd as you may know plays for the Rockies but was shut down this year with problems with his back But he plans on playing one more year before he retires. Todd who is a 5 time all-star and winner of 3 gold gloves has plenty to teach Josh I think this will be very good for Thole. He needs to improve his game if he is to be our everyday catcher and he knows that. I expect the Mets to go out and bring in another catcher, clearly after 6 weeks Kelly Shoppach ’s 15 mins are up and he needs to go, I loved the way he handled the young pitchers and in most cases he called a good game but his offense was disappointing and one does cancel out the other.

What the Mets will do this off season is still very much a question we know we need a leadoff hitter; Tejada just does not have the speed for that, and at least one solid major league outfielder who could lead off. I see no need for any changes in the infield The Mets would be nutz to trade Ike and they will need to make a decent offer to Wright or lose him I say give him 7-8 years at least I know the Mets are not inclined to do that normally but David is a special case and he need and deserves a long term deal so get it done Sandy. Second base with Murphy certainly works for me he has done an outstanding job mastering that position and although he still needs a little work I am sure he will get that from Teufel next year. Murph finished up the year bating just above .290 had 40 doubles, the first lefty batter in Mets history to do that in a single season. One of the things I want him to do is pay more attention to his positioning when he turns the double play he must stay away from the front of the bag he still does that now and again and it makes me cringe cause he is vulnerable to another hit like the one he got last year But of course the Mets might trade Murph something I would be opposed to but if there is enough interest and the deal is too hard to pass up ya never know. We do not need starting pitching but the pen need to be fixed it is a mess and is probably the most important issue Alderson will have other than signing Wright and Dickey. I would hang on to Parnell who I still have faith in with that 100 MPH fast ball and 2.60 ERA he is a reliable late inning reliever with a great curve, may not be good as a closer, not enough strikeouts, I guess we will have to suffer thru another year with Francisco, what I want to see is a major improvement in the pen, another catcher and a solid lead off outfielder. I also want to keep Hairston who could platoon with Bay, Duda or Baxter I also want to give Nieuwenhuis another shot in center field, Torres like Shoppach 15 mins are up and he needs to go I never felt he really took over the position well from Pagan it is time to move on, Kirk is already working on his weaknesses, he knows the pitchers got him figured out last year when they found holes in his swing and started getting him swing at just about everything especially the hard stuff inside he just could not seem to lay off those pitches resulting in too many strike outs Then of course his other weakness is hitting lefties which was a big problem for him. Somehow I can’t see him as a bench player like Turner or Baxter I want him in at least a platoon situation in the outfield. Speaking of Turner he has got to be back on our bench where he did an outstanding job, besides who will throw the pies :D seriously thou JT contributed so much playing 1st 2nd third and short not to mention his pinch hitting in clutch situations Baxter played a nice outfield and was good in pinch hit situations as well he just has to watch those strikeouts.
The GM Meetings, which is the start of trade discussions, are Nov. 6-9 .and the winter meetings are Dec 3-6

The votes are all in for the NL CY Young and the winner will be announced Nov. 14,

See you guys soon in Mets winter report 2013

So with football season here bffs Davis Turner and Duda threw the ball around before a game recently
check out the arm on Ike ‘Manning’ Davis

Great vid of the boys playing some football...really nice arm on Ike!Thanks sonny for that nice touch to end the season. Speaking of Ike, proud of how he responded after the poor start and all that Valley Fever stuff. 32 homers, 90 RBI is a great finish and hopefully any talk of trading Ike is just ridiculous talk now. Whatever doubts about Ike's ability to drive the ball out of the park and knock in runs he just demolished. You don't just see that kind of power anywhere and even Sandy Alderson has indicated he won't trade Ike unless he gets a compensatory bat of that impact back....and Ike will be 26 and is under the club's control for four more years til free agency so I just don't see him going anywhere. He's a great guy, team oriented and great with the community and I don't ever want to hear talk about his so called partying or "uncoachability" ever again. You build clubs around talents like Ike....not give up on him. He's got the temerament and approach to play well in this city......the game where all the stuff was being talked about in the papers he responded not by shrinking but smacking two solid hits. We love Ike and hope he will give Mets fans thrills for years to come!

Proud of Daniel Murphy,too...over .290 with forty doubles,65 RBI and the best thing was how steady he was becoming defensively.I know you still have a wquibble or two about his occasional habits with the double play but he really turned some gems and showed instincts and range. My only thing was his erratic streak s with the bat, much more up and down at the plate than usual. I hope gets the chance to build on that, not get traded unless it was for a key piece the club doesn't have yet. Like you though sonny, know it's a business.

Ruben Tejada showed a lot this year, hitting .289 and showing the ability to handle the bat as well as superb defense at shortstop. As he gets older he'll get a bit stronger and drive the ball more but he'll be a plus offensively even if he doesn't have the explosiveness on the basepaths as his predecessor Jose Reyes.

David Wright was amazing in the first half, carried the club but it's so hard to maintain that pace all year. Still finished with a .306 average,21 homers,93 RBI, and broke Ed Kranepool's Met all time hit record of 1,418 finishing with 1,426. Defensively was Gold Glove caliber all season and definitely has to be extended. Around six or seven years between 120-130 milllion should do it. Mets supposedly are starting around $100 mil but definitely room to go up from there. Reading that the Mets would like to get David signed by the World Series, and hope that talks progress quickly and without snags.

Many question marks for the outfield.... Scott Hairston a plus with timely hitting and 20 home runs in part time action but is he good enough defensively to commit significant money for the next two or three years? Lucas Duda has to show that swing from his first year that resulted in a .290 average...he was so lost the second half but did come back with some nice home runs late. He's such a good natural hitter he shouldn't struggle like that. He's strong enough he'll hit a good number of homers without trying. Jason Bay....well,enough said. Great teammate and character, plays defense and plays hard but has been one of the biggest signing disasters ever not only in Met history but baseball history. Kirk Nieuwenhuis hopefullly gets a shot again too...got injured but after a solid first couple of months just gave up too many at bats with strikeouts and weak swings after that. Plays hard, with passion and is a plus defensively and on the bases. He has to get it together at the plate though to have a role even as a regular platoon guy. Mike Baxter....another possibility who plays a solid outfield and a sweet swing, but occasionally strkes out too much. Jordany Valdespin...another athletic type with power, speed and passion. Hopefully the Mets can get a relatively inexpensive but solid bat and presence the trade or free agent route.

Josh Thole has to improve at the plate....Mets cannot afford a .240, no power presence with all their offensive difficulties. Glad he's going to work hard back home to revive his hitting approach but there is a lot of work needed if Josh is ever going to remain at least a platoon player behind the plate.

Our relief needs work...who knows what we will get out of the current crop of guys on a consistent basis so we may need more outside help here.Still want to hold on to Bobby Parnell but only as a regular seventh or eighth inning guy, not a regular closer.

Our starting rotation can be a great strength especially getting back Johann Santana healthy and rested after the nagging injuries and the possibility of fatigue from pitching too many innings early on(topped off by his 134 pitch no hitter June 1)set him back and eventually out of the rotation the last couple of months.

Gotta sign RA Dickey. What a competitor, what a story, what a person. Just so happy for him going 20-6 with a 2.73 ERA,over 230 strikeouts and revolutionizing the knuckleball. Two or three years is reasonable...gotta reward him for going above and beyond expectations. Remaking himself as a pitcher in his mid 30's...then goingfrom a solid rotation piece to Cy Young contender......remarkable achievement. Jon Niese has grown into a dependable #3 type at least....13-9 with a 3.40 ERA showed the Mets were right to give him a five year extension. Matt Harvey with an incredible start with one of the lowest ERAs in the history of Met rookies, great power arm with poise, dedication and talent who wants to be excellent and not settle for good. When he gains command of his secondary pitches and location of his fastball he will be a monster. Dillon Gee is coming back and was showing solid progress and Jeremy Hefner after several poor atarts ended the season with back to back strong effforts. With Zack Wheeler, Jennry Mejia, Jeurys Familia and others on the horizon our rotation can be deep and strong in the near future.

Can't wait for sonny's Hot Stove thread and want to thank him, syam and everyone else for their passion and contribution. The Mets WILL be "amazin" again real soon!..|

Great post Saucy you apparently agree with much of what I posted recently which goes to prove great baseball minds think alike:D

I liked saucy assessment of our players and what we can expect next year, the question of course still remains who will stay who will go. I certainly agree that Dwright has to stay but I dono if the $100 Million number that has been thrown around is going to cut it. David is looking more at $125-$150 and as import he wants a long deal. He wants to stay with the Mets until retirement but he has not ruled out the possibility of testing free agency. Keep in mind that if there is no deal the Mets still have an option on Wright for 2013, so they can decide then whether they should retain Wright for 2013 or get rid of him through a trade, although I think losing Wright would be the last thing that the Mets want.

In addition to Wright and Dickey the Mets have to keep Davis and Murphy. Saucy and I have written many times about Ike and his importance and worth to the team and as a Mets fan you do not want him gone. The same would apply to Murphy who although has always been able to handle the bat Some have argued that Murph is not giving us enough power with that bat, I say what Daniel Murphy lacked in power, he made up for with 40 doubles, hitting .292 with a .339 OBP. Now I agree that the OBP will need to come up if Murphy continues to not be a great power threat but smokes the ball all be it not over the fence. His line drive percentage was about 25%, which has consistently gotten better over the years. If he can improve his OBP and continue to hit for average while racking up all them there doubles, I am a happy Mets fan.
As to how he has handled his glove I am very impressed with what he has accomplished at second base keeping in mind his natural position is third base, he may not have the softest of hands and God love him he is not always graceful, but he has improved his range, working on that is why he plays so deep at second. No one can say his defense this year wasn’t impressive. I could see watching him and speaking with him that he got more comfortable as the year went on. Check it out, he made nearly every routine play, with a strong arm, become adept at turning the double play and you can expect his errors to drop next year he knows the number somewhere around 15 was a bit high. With the biggest hole in our lineup in the outfield and pen I just see no reason for the Mets to make any moves at second why should they when they have Murph. Daniel is arbitration eligible for the first time this offseason. He made just about half a mill in 2012, so his salary will go up in 2013.

I will see Murph in a couple of weeks he is coming up for the benefit for our sweetheart media relations Shannon Forde, who sadly is battling breast cancer. Shannon is loved by so many in the Mets organization which she has been a part of since 1994. A lot of players and broadcast people will be in New Jersey attending the dinner to help raise money to help our beloved Shannon. I will prolly roll out my Mets winter thread right after that event with info on how it went.

A few days after the dinner I will be heading out to Arizona to see how things are going with Davis Thole and the Arizona Fall league and hope to have plenty of news from out there. Then after the holidays I am off to Florida to check in again on Murphy and before ya know it I will be reporting from spring training again. So stay with me kids I will do what I can to keep you up to date on what the Mets are up to over the winter and into spring training.

Sonny and I agree too much, we need a little controversy.I like Bobby Ojeda on SNY!:p
Anyway, on target with your perspectives as always and look forward to all the good stuff coming up in your winter thread!..|

HOLY CRAP! Jason Bay and the Mets depart ways. Didn't expect it so soon!

Better mean the Mets are freeing up dollars to get a solid bat/defensive presence in the outfield. You don't have to spend crazy to get a good, solid piece to help bring the Mets to a more competitive position. But you have to spend at least SOMETHING.

Shocked me, too...didn't think the Mets would do anything this dramatic but credit Jason Bay for seeing this as the best move for both parties. Great guy, great teammate, played the game right but couldn't stay healthy and never performed offensively to any standards deserving of that 16 mil per season salary. Hope he can get himself into a good situation and have a few quality years left elsewhere even as a solid complimentary player.

The Mets still have to pay him the rest of his contract money, so it be another year or so. Heard he wants to go back to the Soxs. Funny but sad truth is, watch him be good where ever he goes now. My boss is a Mets fan (orginally from Brooklyn), we like to bust his balls bc he is a Mets fan. Office is split bw Yanks and Soxs fans. The life of living in CT. Cant wait to get his opinion on this when he returns from vacation.

Yep, heard he does get the money for the remaining year and option buyout ...it appears the Mets do want to have roster flexibility. Bay was so good replacing Manny Ramirez in Boston for a year and a half, sure a lot of strikeouts but played well in clutch situations and a lot of power. Yep he may just break out again somewhere else, but certainly things had just gone as wrong as it possibly could go but really who expected Bay to find himself again with the Mets ? Maybe a return trip to Boston is just the ticket as their depth is depleted since that infamous trade with the Dodgers last summer.

Connecticut is primarily AL territory, then? I know Matt Harvey the young, exciting Mets starting pitcher is a Connecticut native ...think Yankee fan growing up. Not many Mets/NL fans in Connecticut, gtru?

Jason Bay certainly dissappointed in his stay with the Mets. I've read where much of his money owed by the Mets will be deferred down the road, so it should free up some money, which will help the Mets get a deal done with DWright and RA Dickey, and perhaps allow them to get some decent help for the outfield and bullpen. Duda had surgery to repair a broken wrist earlier this month, which he got from an accident while moving. Was Sonny helping him move???? Where is Sonny??? Did Sonny trip Lucas Duda??? We need some answers!! Now!

LOL!Sonny we need Hot Stove dish now!!!!:p

Yay!See you all in the Hot Stove thread!
