New York Mets Winter Report 2011-12

I'm sure those guys will be back before too long. Harvey just needs a little bit more seasoning, and working on command. Kirk, den Dekkar, and Stinson may also reappear either due to injuries or poor performance by the guys who start the season in NY, and/or great performances by them while at Binghamton or Buffalo. Let's hope we get to field our starting infield together before April.

I agree with syam,sonny....Kirk and Matt will be here before long.No need to push Matt especially too hard right now...let him continue developing his other pitches and he'll be up sometime during the season. It's a growing process but I'm glad you are there to help lend support and encouragement.

I know Dillon has worked on his conditioning and eating habits this offseason and spring training and is physically looking good...glad to hear he is also looking more comfortable on the mound after a rough start.Bettering his conditioning is going to help but it's always important to be able to refine pitch selection, and very important in Dillon's case because though his stuff is really pretty good velocity wise,he can hit 90mph...he isn't a power pitcher and has to rely on movement and control. He has shown when he has it working,he can do a very solid job in the rotation.

Yeah guys of course I know those boys will be back it’s just tough when the cuts come is all. In fact Terry Collins told Matt if a starting pitcher goes down he would get the call. Matt will remain here and will pitch in prolly two more Grapefruit League games, that cause he is allowed to be borrowed from minor league camp because he is not on the 40-man roster.
For sure Harvey is the best available starting pitcher in the event of any injury to one of our starters. Common sense says Matt has nothing to loose and everything to gain by waiting it out and ensure regular innings in the minors refining a few things. One of things Matt wants to do is improve on control and do a better job holding runners. His mechanics at least up to his release point are great but he is going to work about his follow-through, he will tell ya it is cut off quickly and for sure puts stress on his arm. He has improved that by putting his legs and back more into the deceleration basically imagine those larger muscles helping his arm and slow it down after he releases. We know he has a live fastball with a really good sink and he needs to hide his secondary stuff not allow the batters to catch on to what he is going to pitch.

As to Kirk Nieuwenhuis I don’t get it. Why the Mets prefer Adam Loewen and Mike Baxter makes me nutz, I can not be the only one who think that Kurt is better than both those guys. As to that other outfielder, I think his name is Bay  I will give him that he plays a mean right field but how sick am I of watching him come up to the plate only to strike out. Oh wait, I take that back he does make contact with the ball when there is a runner on first and hits into a double play. Please.

Couple more guys sent to minor league camp late yesterday Zach Lutz and Valentino Pascucci

The boys are back in camp today to pay the Tigers; Santana will pitch, others on the card today are Torres, Murphy, Bay, Davis, Duda, Satin, Thole, Johnson and Cedeno will dh. You can also expect to see Bobby Parnell, Jeremy Hefner, Frank Francisco, Ramon Ramirez and Jon Rauch pitch today.
You can see the game live this afternoon on SNY

If you were wondering how Reyes did yesterday in his first meeting with the Mets as a Marlin, he only had one at bat against Dickey and hit a comebacker on the second pitch he saw, following that they had an almost one hour rain delay and Jose never cane back. I like hearing that when Collins spoke to Reyes pretty much all Jose wanted to know about was how DWright was feeling. Jose also called Jay Horowitz asking about Wright.

Well, I see the Wilpons and the Picard sides have reached a settlement where the Mets have to pay $162 million to the losers of money to Madoff. They don't have to pay for 3 years. I'm not a lawyer, but I guess this is done for now. Will be interesting to see how this will effect the Mets now and in the future.

The Mets will be hurting for a few years..I don't get how the Wilpons can still stay in control of this team after all the damage they've done to it.

Well guys ya know I don’t usually comment on the Wilpon’s or the mess they got into but I will say I am relieved that all that is now over. Really no surprise to me how it all came down, after all the settlement was the way I expected it to go, for one thing Picard knew he had nearly impossible thing to prove and of course the Last thing the Wilpons needed was ugly trial. Only good can happen from here, Wilpon and Katz can now mingle in money from their other investments and holdings and help the team, they were not allowed to do that during the investigation. Fred Wilpon made a comment yesterday the first order of business and the first priority will be getting down to spring training camp and bring the Mets back to the prominence that our fans deserve.
Um, tell ya what Grandpa stay the Hell away from the team just write a big fat check and give it to Alderson.

Yesterday was a day off for the players a great day to get in some golf and try and not think about the lousy spring we are having. We all hoped for a quick start and fast getaway out of the gate this spring but that is not happinin We have just lost 9 games in a row and have reached the half-way point of spring training with the worst record in baseball at 3-11-1. We are last in slugging percentage, our in OBP we are 27th out of 30 teams YIKES.:help:

While we have had some very positive outings from Santana I am very concerned about Mike Pelfrey, I missed his last game on Sunday which was a road trip but I later saw the tapes of Pelf. It was beyond ugly, his third bad start. .On Sunday he gave up 8 runs on 8 hits and walked 4 in just 2 2/3 innings. Pelfrey’s three day total is 20 hits, 6 walks and 4 HR in just 9 2/3 innings, and his ERA is now 14.90. Good Grief!
We have to worry about Pelf I am still waitin and a hopin to see him finally develop a good secondary pitch and I am very concerned about the fact that he has not gotten a single batter out in spring training. His fast ball Sunday was only 87 mph and in trying to overcome he overthrew the ball trying to up his velocity. I am trying to figure out why he stopped using his sinker, I mean what I see now watching the Sunday tapes he did not get on top of the baseball to drive it downward. What he did was sorta like throwing a Frisbee and getting on the side of the baseball and not finishing the pitch which stayed flat and in the middle of the strike zone. Then it got worse when Pelf threw what I can only think he meant to throw in a down the middle two-seam fastball, he musta meant it to be an inside pitch, but it ended up resulting in the three-run homer. That pitch was off by at least half a foot.
And it does not stop with him, the bullpen ERA is now at 9.20. Frank Francisco is at 7.20, Jon Rauch at 9.53 and Ramon Ramirez leads the mess with 11.25. We are in deep ka ka kiddies.

Hopeful Tim Byrdak will be back sooner than later,I saw him on Sunday after his surgery this past week and said he could be back sooner than the 6-week’s we had originally been told. He looked great, some thought he would need a cane for a while but he was walking around just fine thank you very much. In fact he was already walking around his hotel room the night of the surgery Tuesday without crutches. Tim said he would expected to be tossing a baseball by the end of the week but also called Opening Day a long shot,.

As I said I hung out here instead of traveling to watch the team I wanted to watch my minor leaguers cause that’s what I mostly came down here to do. Watching the up and coming superstars is like the most fun I have had here. Yesterday was especially fun I was watching the pitchers and all of a sudden out of no where Johan Santana showed up to show the kids a few things and offer encouragement. I mean how great was that?? Of course the guys were thrilled and you had to see their faces as they huddled around Johan hanging on his ever word
it was just awesome.:)

Dwright came out as well, earlier in the week I watched David do some fielding but he did not throw taking it nice and easy one step at a time. But yesterday my heart went a little pitter patter cause he came out and hit off a tee and swung a bit at some soft tosses in the batting cage. He is planning on turning it up a notch today (Tuesday). Ruben Tejada is also expected to be back and play today. Another sight for sore eyes was Reese Havens who has been out with a back problem he was out there taking groundballs.

The Mets game tonight is against the Nats facing Stephen Strasburg. Dillon Gee will be on the mound for us. The Mets/Nats game can be seen tonight on SNY starting at 6.Tonight’s game marks the return of the master himself Gary Cohen who will do the play by play his basketball commitments now done. On that subject I have to give a big shout out to Kevin Burkhardt who did an outstanding job filling in. KB has come a long way since calling those games in Brooklyn for the Cyclones he has really gotten comfortable in his skin and makes listing to the game enjoyable to be sure. He will go back to field reporting and filling in for Gary when needed.

I thought about this picture I had of Kevin and wanted to share, it’s from last year, just as Kevin was about to go on air with a field report the skies opened up and it began to pour, ever the pro Kevin tried to get the job done off camera

You can hide KB but we see you. :D

Been traveling all over the place with the boys, yesterday I went to see Santana in Jupiter and the news is very good. He continues to not only pitch well but improved on every start and the best and most important thing is there have absolutely no setbacks he continues to feel great. I’ll tell ya I see no reason why he can’t be the opening day starter at this point something I never expected at all but how amazing would that be? Yesterday he pitched 6 innings an allowed only one run on six hits and one walk I think I counted 7 strikeouts, actually if I got it right it was 46-48 out of 70 pitches for strikes. He said later that he feels really good, mentally and physically, that he expects to pitch opening day.

I have been running with the minor leaguers and of course keeping up with Matt Harvey, On Tuesday he pitched the Marlins AAA team not a bad outing although hr did give up three runs in six innings. I spent some time with Kirk Nieuwenhuis who is still feeling the effects of that strained oblique he says good days and fair days but he is able to at least throw. The timing on this injury sucks cause with Torres out it would be a god opportunity for Kirk to return to the Mets to fill in at center. He did say he is going to try hitting today. Matt den Dekker is coming to fill in at center for today’s game against the Astros. Torres is day to day.

I saw Zack Wheeler he said his sprained ankle is no biggie, so sad cause he did not even hurt it in a game he sprained it running up stairs. (what a Jewch) ;) But he is good and only expects to miss maybe one or two games is all. In fact the day I saw him he threw on it and it didn’t feel so bad.

David Wright was in the cage this morning and yup kiddies he was hitting taking batting practice so that news continues to get better. David thinks it is a good shot at finally playing in spring training game this weekend or for sure early next week.

Today’s game against the Astros will be televised on SNY at 1pm the lineup will be
Ruben Tejada, Daniel Murphy, Jason Bay, Ike Davis, Lucas May, Vinny Rottino, Rob Johnson,Matt den Dekker and R.A. Dickey on the mound

I have to mention Ike Davis Is 25 today. Yup there will be cake :D

Yesterday I told you that Matt den Dekker was called back up to fill in for Andres Torres who is day to day, well after the game he got the news that the Mets officially put him back on the roster something he did not expect and was really excited about. Of course it’s temporary but still it’s nice to know they have confidence in him. He will remain till either Andres Torres or Scott Hairston return
In another move Josh Satin and Omar Quintanilla Fernando Cabrera and Chuck James had been sent to the minors. With Josh gone Ike will need to find a new fishing buddy.
I’ll tell ya for sure that won’t be Murph he hates that sport.

Good show tonight at 8:00 on MLB’s 30 Clubs in 30 Days, John Smoltz talks with Johan Santana. also interviews with Jason Bay, David Wright, Ike Davis, Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese and Terry Collins, R.A. Dickey will do a tour of the spring training camp.

I did not travel to see the Mets Braves game and it's just as well I got a couple of text messages and it is not going well. Neise having a rough time and the outfield is a disaster with Loewen Duda & May all having bad days. Sounds like a good game to miss but when everyone gets back I will find out more and write about it tomorrow but as of right now it ain’t pretty.

As I said with Ike’s birthday yesterday there would be cake well….cup cakes here is a look.Justin Turner took video of Ike getting his cup cakes on his phone but messed it up pretty good I can’t show it to you yet.

I had to make a choice today to stay here and watch Dillon Gee’s start in a minor league game or travel to watch Matt Harvey pitch against the Nationals in Viera at Space Coast Stadium Thing about the Viera game is that a lot of the future stars of both the Mets and Nats will be playing as well as having Stephen Strasburg pitching for the Nats. Dillon was supposes to pitch against the Nats rather than Harvey but the thinking was that Dillon is scheduled to face them in Game 5 of the regular season and Gee has already seen Washington twice in spring. The decision came easy even though I love my boy Dillon I just can’t miss a chance to watch Harvey, I just can’t.
Plus Murph and Ike are both traveling with the team to play in that game as well so I gotta be there. :D

I watched David Wright again yesterday he is up to full workouts now and is the third day in a row David was out there doing full pregame work with the guys. I am not privy to just walking up to David and asking how he feels but Murphy is and Daniel told me that David feels just great no pain what so ever and as of lat night David is thinking he will finally play in a game on Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves. Today David will stand in the batter's box to take pitches from a pitcher possibly start out by just tracking balls without swinging which is something he really ha yet to do and is part of that whole process of spring training that he has missed put on. It’s stuff like that that David wants very much to do he feels he had enough spring training time to play but he needs to experience the whole package like hitting, sitting down and then go out to play third base. Ike Davis jumped in to the conversation saying David wants to now get his at-bats and get on the field with the guys and getting used to each other.

While I don’t like to write abut injuries there is one thing I wanna mention and that I cause of so many Injuries likely the Mets may have to remove more players from the 40-man roster and expose them to waivers than we thought or would have liked. It should not effect which players make the final spots on the Opening Day roster. Since we still do not know if Scott Hairston or Andres Torres will be ready I am still hoping for Kirk Nieuwenhuis who is still on the 40 man roster to bounce back from that oblique injury. Right now Matt den Dekker who is not on the 40 man roster has the job during spring training, Collins is not saying publically who he prefers to possibly replace Torres on the Opening Day roster, but I happen to know he really likes Matt den Dekker mostly because of his defense but that could be a problem because Matt strikes out he strikes out a lot so he is going to have to improve his approach at the plate the kid has plenty of power but he does over-swing. It will all come out when we see how Hairston and Torres come along over the next few weeks. I did see Scott Hairston swinging a bat the other day he seems to be coming along, I don’t know the guy so I have not spoken with him but some have said he could be ready opening day. Andres Torres however has not improved very much.

I forgot to mention the other day when the Mets played the Astros I ran into Fernando Martinez a kid I got to know pretty well in Brooklyn, he looked great put on a few lbs of muscle and even grew a little beard which looked good on him. He just seemed so much more mature than the last time I saw him. His hope is to just stay healthy something that has avoided him for some time now. He did say that The Astros will option him to the minor leagues and that this will be his last option year. You may recall he was claimed off waivers from the Mets during winter

With just one week to go till opening day the line up is beginning to take shape.
Santana looks like a go and Andres Torres is just about there as well and as of this morning it is looking like the pitching staff will be Johan Santana, Ra Dickey Jon Niese Mike Pelfrey, and Dillon Gee in the rotation.
Tim Byradk is a question mark although it is looking more and more everyday he will be ready, if not Daniel Herrera will fill in temporarily. Then in the pen we will have Miguel Batista (as the long-man), Jon Rauch, Manny Acosta, Bobby Parnell, Frank Francisco and Ramon Ramirez.
The infield will be Ike Davis, Ruben Tejada, Daniel Murphy and David Wright, Catching will be done by Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas, the outfield will be; Jason Bay, Andres Torres and Lucas Duda with Mike Baxter, Ronny Cedeno, Scott Harriston and Justin Turner on the bench.

Remember Chris Young? Well the Mets have signed him to a minor league contact. I liked what Chris brought to the table before he was hurt but he had similar to Santana surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in the pitching shoulder and that kind of surgery takes about a year to recover from and Chris had this procedure done last May so it might be a couple of months before he is truly healthy. According to Young he says he feels great and I see no harm in signing him to a minor-league non-guaranteed deal, Plus Chris can be a very effective pitcher and I would prefer we hang on to him than to have some other team steal him away; we have to think ahead to late August when we may need a guy like Young. Plus think about the possibility of the Mets having a six-man rotation once Young is ready to return to the majors, I think about a six man rotation cause other than Dickey four of our five starters would probably be better off with extra rest between starts, Then there is also the real possibility that the Mets end up trading Pelfrey.

I received great news form Kirk Nieuwenhuis last night he is fully recovered and is going to play in a minor league intrasquad game today, he feels great and is ready to go. I have said over and over again Kirk wil our beat choice in our outfield if we need a replacement outfielder.

Well all good things must come to an end, my dad is leaving today to go back to NY and I will follow on Monday
I wanted to hang back to celebrate Murphy’s 27th birthday which is on Sunday, can’t miss that. :D
It was a great trip catching up with a lot of ole friends and making a bunch of new ones. I especially want to thank Murphy, Ike, Turner and Gee for making us so welcome; those guys are my brothers and I love em to death.
A very special thanks to Kevin Burkhardt, Bill Webb and all the guys at SNY for their hospitality.

My dad has graciously allowed me to take a sabbatical from work this summer so that I can accept a part time position with the Brooklyn Cyclones which will give me great chance to work with all the up and coming future Mets something I have wanted to do. The only sad part is between the Cyclones Mets and Bisons I will not have time to play this year in my summer league on Long Island something I have been doing since high school, I will miss it but the time has come for me to move on from that.

I'll be glad to get this season underway. The spring has been rather boring to me, what with all the minor tweaks/injuries. THe only real positive has been Santana's good work in recovery from his surgery. Hopefully the guys will all report to Citi Field in good health and stay that way for awhile. Will be interesting to see what they can really do, spring gave me NO idea, what with many players missing multiple games/weeks from preparation. Ready for next week. Let's Go Mets!!

The boys will be paying in Jupiter today but I am staying back to watch Johan Santana pitch in a simulated game in Port St. Lucie, it is gonna be his last spring training start and how he does today could or I should say will allow Terry Collins to formally announce that Johan will be the opening day starter and that is huge. I need to see how Johan pitches today, he has been doing really well following that surgery but in his last outing he had trouble getting loose and had soreness in his legs. Not that it was any thing to worry about but still we need to see how he rebounds today. Santana himself the other day said that he was still very much unsure if he would pitch the opener pointing out that there was no indication that he has suffered a setback in his recovery. What is important to remember here is that none of those issues appeared serious enough to jeopardize Santana’s ability to pitch for the Mets in April; the Mets and Santana are just trying to manage his return as cautiously as possible. In he event Santana does not start the season’s first game, he would prolly pitch in the fifth game of the year with Dickey making the opening day start. We will know more at the end of the day today, but you guys can see why I want to stay here and watch him pitch.

Another reason for me to stay in this area is cause I want to go down and visit with Nick Evans tonight. Nick just got word that he is not going to make the Pirates team and will be going to the minors. We had hoped Nick would make the team but once again just as it did so many times when Nick was a Met he has been left out. With the Mets the reason he was shuffled around so much was difficult to understand because for the most part he played very well but with the Pirates the story is different because Nick had a very bad spring so it was not unexpected that he would not make it. Still, since this has happened so many times he of course is very disappointed in himself and I just I did so many times when he was a Met just want to hang and support him as much as I can. It’s what friends do, it’s what I do.

This will be my last post in this thread before starting up the new Mets 2012 thread I will be here just two more days and then head north home to NY to get and await opening day. My dad, uncle and I plan on being at Citi field all day from early morning and into the night so I should have plenty to tell you guys then. I am of course as most Mets fan s excited about the 2012 season; I am always a little lost when there is no baseball.
As to how our team will do I loved what SNY broadcaster said “I think everyone understands that a lot of things have to go right for them to be a postseason team in 2012,” Cohen said. “But there’s plenty of talent in the building, it is a question of depth, it is a question if they can stay healthy and perform at a top level. Certainly, the underlying theme the Mets have had all spring is anything is possible and why not them.” Well said Gary ..|

Finally, Sunday is Daniel Murphy’s birthday, happy birthday to one of the funniest, sweetest and hardest working baseball player I know and all the best for a great 2012 season?

Here is Murph on Thursday modeling his new I like 28 shirt.
