i'm not sure what to say...if it really is leading to a higher rate of accidents because pedestrians are not paying attention, then i guess something has to be done. but i don't know if this is the best thing to do.

I always pause mine when I am preparing to cross a road, and for safety reasons, keep it at a low volume. Personally, I think if you cross a busy road in your own little world with music blaring, you're a bit of a dipshit and don't have much grounds to complain if you do get hit

If they're that friggin' stupid, maybe they deserve to be injured or killed.
Sort of like culling the herd.

Are they going to make it illegal to listen to the car radio? Think about your shopping list? Stare at the attractive young men waiting at the bus stop? People have to take responsibility for their own actions. You can't legislate everything. I really hate this kind of nanny-state response to every problem.

I agree with unclaimedblessing, we need to cull the herd. I listen to an iPod, but I also look both ways when I cross the street. If I'm too stupid to pay attention, the species is better off without me.

Sadly I am in the real world and over in the uk they do fine you for talking on a cell while driving. In fact they love to do it. It is a source of revenue for the government.

I wonder if there have been any cases of New Yorkers stepping out to be hit by a bus while listening to their wives?

Even if you're from a one horse town, when you move to any major city, you'd have to be brain dead not to notice the scary traffic.
There are aggressive cab drivers, alpha male truck drivers, screaming ambulances, fire trucks and cop cars, there are also lost tourists and regular motorists trying to get from one place to another with minimum harm. Mix in some road rage and it can be quite a debacle.
Now, if someone is more interested in listening to their favorite Britney song for the 148th time and steps out into the bedlam, our collective gene pool is probably better off without them.
The reference to deaf (or blind) people is totally out of line, they're trained from birth to live more carefully or defensively.
