A few months ago, the Mayor of Newark, NJ announced a similar program designed to reward citizens for snitching on gun owners. According to the mayor, "We don't even have to have a conviction," for an informant to get paid a cool $1,000 cash. Rat out your neighbor, get paid. Simple. [MY EMPHASIS]

YES, RAT ON YOUR NEIGHBOR, BECOME A STOOLIE...and get $1,000 cash! I bet that the neighbors are going to be watched for more than just breaking gun laws. But is it ILLEGAL to own a gun in Newark, or what?

This is not the sensible approach to making Newark any safer, not at all, and it tramples civil and human liberties.

Only for illegal guns.

Not sure why it's such a huge issue.

Police offer rewards for tips relating to other illegal activity all the time.

Have you ever been to Newark? I think Corey Booker is spot on!

Interesting.

My gut reaction is that if I were a billionaire, I'd offer to pay legal fees and more to any gun owner willing to wear openly, if they got in trouble. I'd try to get, say, ten thousand well-armed citizens on the streets, weapons plainly in view.

One catch: I'd make it very clear that anyone participating in my program would be subject to the old, old rule in America, that if the police discover a crime, they can "raise the hue and cry, and summon the well-armed citizens" to render assistance. Just for balance, I'd compensate anyone called to assist that way with a thousand dollars.

I know others disagree, but in my book, if you're carrying and someone needs assistance, you'd better respond -- especially if a cop asks for help.

We have something called Crime Stoppers in my city where you can call anonymously and tip off police. It's been around for years and very effective.

But again, this is for ILLEGAL guns.

If someone has lawful possession of a gun or a lawful carry permit, this does not apply to them.

I know. But programs like this make the haters come out and drool. There should be a flip side making clear that there is an individual right to keep and bear arms, reminding people to not just call any time they see a gun.

Oh, yeah -- I'd get Clint Eastwood to do a commercial for my program.
