Newt Gingrich promises moon base by the end of his second term

Newt had a good idea

Imagine if someone other than newt had it

A very sad bunch

What's really sad is the Barry Goldwater Republician model is dead. The Republician party as it is now is most certainly not less government but one of religious extremists.

Newt had a good idea

A very sad bunch

Except he didn't.

The moon is an area protected against annexation or unilateral colonization by a single nation. So his idea of turning it into a '51st state' is about as asinine as the rest of his campaign.

Whether it's a good idea is kinda irrelevant: it's impossible to do in 8 years. It took that long to get a man on the moon - how could a whole colony be created in the same timeframe? What would its purpose be? Newt's proposal defies science: how will we fly people to and from the moon? How will we provide them with an ongoing oxygen supply? Where will their longterm energy come from? These are major hurdles today for the International Space Station, which has just a few people on board and is a helluva lot closer.

I love the concept of a moon base, but it would take decades and trillions of dollars to achieve. I think Americans want the roads between towns fixed before they start paving a road to the moon.

There are a lot of things that need fixing...space exploration should be last on the list of things money needs to go to.

I think it's a good idea personally and don't mind that it was Gingrich who said it. That said, I don't think it should be a priority until after we get out of the mess we are in currently.

why wait :(
i wana get off this fked up planet

I think that this is what is so absurdly apparent. Making the moon a US state just exposes the fact that Newt, when you scrape at the surface a bit, is just a ridiculously stupid man who actually can't even be bothered with simple facts as he spins his bizarre fantasies.

It was also a great joke on his audience of no-spend right wing audience members.

In the Republican perfect world, it would have to be private enterprise, not the public purse, that makes the moon colony possible. Does he even have a plan for how the private capital will magically get diverted into his moonscapade? Nope.

And in eight years.

All Noot was doing was pulling a Trump.

Say the most outrageous thing in front of the cameras and everyone will be talking about it.

And the intellectually feeble will somehow think it is not only do-able, but desirable.

So no. Noot didn't have a good idea. He just had an idea. And proved that he just delivers his pot fueled fantasies unfiltered as though they were brilliant and far sighted. When he runs off the rails like this, he begs the question of whether or not he really has all his mental faculties in order, or whether he is truly a delusional sociopath.

Oh I hope he wins the nomination. We need to watch his total melt-down live.

All while his uncomfortable 'supporters' sit there squirming, seeing the GOP's chances in 2012 collapse.

Yes.

His comment was to inject something positive and optimistic amongst all his negativity. Unfortunately for him everyone knows this isn't possible.

The Moon Treaty

^ "The Moon Treaty" !

Damned if you're not right....

I've never head of this, before....

Meanwhile, we can't decide what states Arizona and New Mexico belong to, as South Carolina is still in mourning over the good ol' days of the "whites only" lunch counter, but damned if we haven't redistricted the moon.

I suspect, in what's left of Newt's relatively convincing white toupeed skull that he has a rather White utopia in mind.

(Those undesirables can scrub down the spaceships, don't cha know....)

Well hot damn voters, that bastion of wholesome intelligence Sarah Palin is endorsing Newt Gingrich for President!

Sarah Palin: "Rage against the machine, vote for Newt, annoy a liberal"

The video is priceless.

Fox News hard hitting investigative journalist question:

"How can newt Gingrich distance himself and say that he's not a .... you know...... an insider ..um ..... ah . . ta... when there are those say he's the consummate Washington insider when .... I mean.... he was the Speaker of the house and was in congress for 20 years?"

Palin's response:

"....... (the longest run-on incoherent sentence without taking a breath you've ever heard)...."

(This woman is really on the Fox payroll?!) :help:

This is the first time I've ever visited The Daily Caller. It's no wonder people who read things like this are so misinformed.

I don't need another reason.

Aside from it coming from Gingrich, it's actually an American policy we should be taking. We need to be pursuing space travel. Before we can colonize any planet with a permanent base or settlement, we must accomplish this feat on the moon.

Yes, we must. Though the up-front reason isn't so we can go colonize other things, it's so we can work out the kinks and bugs in space technology. We need that technology for the sake of earth: the acquisition of just the metals we need for our civilization is becoming more difficult and more environmentally damaging as the demand just keeps growing -- but one good asteroid fetched back to earth orbit could end that. NASA demonstrated we can land on an asteroid; now we need to develop what's needed to put humans on one and bring it back -- a very long ride.

Calisto - one of the moons of Jupiter

That's not the same as Calista? Never mind. :(

That's without makeup. :p

I'm betting his motivation is that China quietly announced they mean to get there by 2025 -- Newt probably thinks the U.S. should be there to welcome them.

Maybe we could make it a prison colony.

...but The Boner told us we're broke. :-({|=

This is what doesn't seem to be glaringly obvious to the Noot Poot Chute Nuzzlers;

....the country is broke. His plan is predicated on unlimited trillions being thrown at the program by whom, exactly?

Not the taxpayer. That would be utterly contrary to the idea of reducing government spending.

Through a private IPO?

Think that Branson and Buffet and Gates and Walton are bored with giving investors a return on equity?

Think that the US public are stupid enough to fall for the same stock bubbles that collapsed when railroads and canals were supposed to be built?

And which 'US' company is supposed to take all the risk and do all the co-ordination? General Motors? Chrysler? General Electric? Halliburton?

I would love to have seen the reaction on the faces of his audience when he delivered this ridiculous nonsense. I'll bet there were a lot of donors sitting there with frozen smiles on their faces looking like a deer caught in the headlights just as it realizes it is going to get schmucked.

I mean, really...

Obama can't have Air Force One gassed-up without the right-wingers bemoaning the cost of the fuel. ( They'd prefer he flew coach on Southwest...)

But a moon base populated by thousands is offered up as a campaign promise ?

Newt, the cost of a silver platter to hand your nomination to Romney on would have been far cheaper.

Why it's as if Newt has been doing all of this as some sort of elaborate book tour. Guaranteeing sales and high-priced speaking engagement fees for the rest of his days. Campaigning for profit.

Nah, that couldn't be it, could it ?

He'd sooner fly to the moon than pull some elaborate stunt such as that....

Yeah. What are the chances?

In fact, only a complete fool or a sociopathic egomaniac wouldn't figure out that any of the current Republican contenders are going to get savaged in the 2012 election.

Oh wait. I guess there is a chance that Romney and Noot think they might sit behind the desk in the oval office.

Best line of the Florida Primary comes from Mitt Romney:

If I had a business executive come to me who said he wanted to spend a few hundred billion dollars to put a colony on the moon, I'd say "You're fired!"
