I think Santorum will exceed expectations and thus get the most traction out of it, even if he places third. Romney and Gingrich are killing each other's campaigns.

Women loathe Newt - 3 wives - open player - leaving on deathbeds and doctors offices - fat

Just not sure if SC women are as in touch with this feeling as nationally

White Republican Men in South Carolina LOVE an "Angry White Male" Politician...Newt played his cards-right during the debates and throwing in coded-racial comments worked like a charm.....

Joe Wilson had CASH flowing in after he called President Obama a Liar...He will be re-elected every 2yrs because of that....

Here's the "sad-fact"....South Carolina Republicans would rather vote for Newt in hopes that he wins the Nomination so they can watch him put the President in-his-place Vs voting for Mitt who has a better chance @ beating Obama....

That's how the Dirty South works...We're slow on Common-sense and thrive on Anger...

Unsurprisingly (to me), I think Newt has got this one. However, since Mitt is not far behind, South Carolina has clearly progressed in its religious/social tolerance ... just not enough. We'll see in another 4 years if it makes any more strides.

I think Romney will likely take Florida ... definitely New York and California ... but the Bible Belt is going to be a real challenge for him.

With:

1) How the delegates are awarded, in so far is them being spread amongst the winners based on where they place in each contest

2) How close some of these races have been (Iowa), or are becoming (South Carolina)

3) The fact that we may have 3 different primary winners in the first three contests (Santorum, Romney, and Gingrich)

... this is making for a very hotly contested and very interesting primary season.

But I will say that if Newt does win the nomination as a result of "Angry White Southern Men's" support of Newt (which is what I had assumed was going to happen for a while), they will only be shooting themselves in the foot since Romney is far more electable in a General Election matchup with Obama. It would be a shame for the GOP if the emotions of this group cost them the entire Presidential Election ... where as if they just used their brains, they could have a real chance.

There may be some tough lessons learned from all this, when it is said and done, for the Republican voters.

Frankly, Newt played CNN and the news media like a cheap fiddle. And where as he did a magnificent job feigning his "outrage" to CNN for opening with that question concerning his ex-wife's interview with ABC, he actually was praying that they would ask it first.

He played to the emotions of the Angry White Male who is upset at the "Liberal News Media" and caught them hook, line, and sinker by firing back at them. There was no serious outrage on Newt's part. He just capitalized on an opportunity, rehearsed the moment over and over in his head on what to say if they would ask it, and delivered a magnificent performance.

CNN opening about that question was the best present they could have offered Gingrich, and he capitalized brilliantly.

I'm not voting for Romney for a number of reasons. His religion is not even on my list! How ironic.

Well it's official Newt has won.

So this is the first time the first 3 states have gone to different people.

Pretty interesting.

I still maintain that Romney will win ultimately, as he will win most of the big delegate rich states.

A lot of Democrats, especially in the South, still eat at Chick-fil-A.....

A lot of African-Americans eat at Chick-fil-A, esp. in the South. Yes, those African-Americans are probably religious & socially conservative, but they probably voted for Obama in 2008 and they will probably vote for Obama again...

Back to the topic of the thread, I find it interesting that Newt Gingrich won.

The winner of the South Carolina GOP primary has gone on to win the Republican nomination, for over the last 40 years....

So, if history is a guide, Newt Gingrich will end up as the GOP nominee...

Newt won because:

Romney stiffed both debates - looked like a deer in the headlights
Romney is NOT a conservative
Newt in both debates referenced local/regional interests - as he knows the area
Romney got caught up in income/tax issues

and the kicker was Newt's ass whipping of John King opening the debate the other night

not too surprising... with the exception of, like, last week, Romney's always been polling 2nd or 3rd in SC.

but it would have been nice for the primaries to be over. I'm sick and tired of having to look at Newt and Santorum on tv.
