Your views about humanity reminded me of someone else's post and my answer is the same...

You're dilemma is a result of the modern emphasis on egalitarian individualism, and respect for equality. You're only disappointed with so much of humanity because you expect them to behave decently. In years past, everyone would have known there were a bunch of assholes out there, and they wouldn't have had some kind of existential fixation on it. We got rid of that distinction because so often hatred was misplaced, and people were frequently misunderstood to be assholes based on some kind of trivial social or cultural difference that proved baseless.

Unfortunately, we've thrown out the baby with the bath water; we've abandoned the essential distinction between "us" and "them" and have lost the ability to say "You're all a bunch of assholes" and then stop worrying about getting them to not be assholes.

I say this time and time again, it's not what a person calls you, it's what you respond to is what really matters. You're not a bundle of sticks, a british schoolboy's helper or a cigarette. That word doesn't even apply to you so why even bother letting those imbeciles win by feeling uncomfortable about going around town from here on out. If you ask me Swiff, you already did the right thing by flipping them off and pretty much ignoring their ignorant comment.

The thing about situations like this is that its not the word, nor the literal meaning its the intent that the words are spoken with and the meaning that the speaker puts into it. Sure faggot doesn't actually apply to any of us BUT people have tagged us with it to portray hatred and when shouted the general message is "We don't like you and wouldn't be apposed to violence against you", thats the scary part really.
