Nichelle Nichols, dead at age 89

Just heard the news that Nichelle Nichols died today.
She was living with her son in New Mexico, but was recently hospitalized.
It was reported Nichelle died of natural causes.

As Lt. Uhura, Nichelle Nichols is immortal.

She was truly a beautiful woman.

I had a chance to meet Nichelle Nichols at a Sci-Fi and comic convention in the late 1980's. . .a very gracious lady

So glad that I was there to share her magic.

She will be missed.

Like most of the Star Trek cast, she became locked into an image that limited her options professionally. That really was true of most of the TV stars who made their name on some breakout show, like Mayberry RFD.

Her role was essentially administrative assistant/switchboard operator, updated to the future, so not very futuristic.

I love that she stayed after MLK's appeal to her, even though I think it may have been the wrong decision for her career. The civil rights era demanded too much of many of its icons, but I hope today has seen their sacrifices pay off in the opportunities others enjoy.

Sadly, the fantasy that Star Trek created was set in the mid-21st century according to fandom sites. We are only 40 years from that date, and we are not even able to travel easily to our own satellite moon, much less across our solar system or own galaxy. The Artemis mission will in hindsight be comparable to one of the early polar expeditions, with much hype but signifying very little.

Would that we could travel that way, but it is likely 1,000 years off, not decades.

Still, thanks for the dream.
