It is possible for men to lactate, we have all the stuff there, but when we do it is usually a sign of some serious pathology (e.g. Cancer).

I don't think we can...at least I don't think I can. I have never gotten anything out of a guy's nipple although I have sucked a lot of them.

No, Males do not have (and do not produce) the hormone that females have that allow for females to secrete milk from their nipples. I learned that fact in my anat class.

Hey Soilwork, what do you mean with that, are you able to lactate?

I mean... "gross."

And no.. being a man, I'm not able to lactate. Just like I can't menstruate but CAN stand up to pee.

Serious pathology, yes, cancer not necessarily.

Some of those 'man boobs' ('gynecomastia') you see on obese guys are just that: functional secretory breasts. The reason: fat cells (adipocytes) contain an enzyme (aromatase) which converts testosterone and other androgens (male sex steroid hormones) into estrogens. The phenomenon is known as 'peripheral estrogens' (as opposed to estrogen of ovarian origin.) Normally, the stem cell line for secretory (ductal) breast tissue remains dormant in men throughout their lives. However, elevated estrogen levels will cause those cells to divide and differentiate into mature, functional breast tissue. Elevated estrogen will also elevate prolactin levels in the pituitary, which is assuming you might be pregnant.

Suffice it to say that neither breast nor pituitary tissue can discriminate between the estrogen source (ovaries vs. fat.)

So the short answer to this question is that the serious underlying pathology seen in a lactating man will be obesity, and likely insulin-resistant diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, etc. And of course once the breast cells start to divide and mature under the influence of peripheral estrogen, the door is open for cancer.

The rise in male breast cancer is tracking the obesity epidemic. Obese men may be at an even higher risk for breast CA than women, because their ductal cells are maturing much later in life, after the stem DNA has been exposed to various somatic insults. This observation is consistent with with the well-documented phenomenon of early pregnancy (before 25) being protective against breast cancer (i.e. cells mature prior to the accumulation of insult)

Lasty, galactorrhea is occasionally seen in men taking anti-psychotic (neuroleptic) drugs, as these inhibit the action of dopamine, which exerts an inhibitory effect on pituitary prolactin. This is especially the case with the older antipsychotics (thorazine, haldol), which are exclusive dopamine antagonists. Dopamine inhibition also accounts for the Parkinsonian ('extrapyramidal') symptoms observed in patients on antipsychotic meds. Also, antipsychotics are not 'weight neutral': they usually cause people to put on quite a bit of fat. This, of course, will increase those peripheral estrogens.

The other thing about obese guys is that some of them actually have cellulite!

Each sex has all the other's hormones. It's only a matter of the extent to which they are present.

Women also have various androgens, and with the withdrawal of estrogen in after menopause, these can be responsible for things like the appearance of facial hair. Also, androgens run the libido in both sexes, and many women who where anorgasmic during their childbearing years suddenly find out what all the shouting was about!

In fertile women testosterone produced by effete (unused) follicles spikes at the time of ovulation. This makes sense evolutionarily: you want to be horny at when your eggs are in the tubes. Rapid withdrawal of estrogen and relative spikes in testosterone also account for the paradoxical libidinousness some women on the rag experience.

Hey Soilwork, what do you mean with that, are you able to lactate?

What can I do when I'd like to lactate, does electro-stimulation help?

You don't want to incur too much nipple trauma, as this will decrease your libido. Your body will read this as suckling, and elevated prolactin will exert an inhibitory effect on follicle pituatary follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and leutenizing hormone (LH) which in men promote the production of sperm and testosterone, respectively.

In women, breast feeding is an imperfect form of birth control.
