No more Pride in hockey

This really bothers me.

I'm glad Outsports is speaking up.

I'm writing the League, the old-fashioned way, tomorrow.

I've already bought a ticket for the April 6 Pride night at the Nashville Predators. I plan to pile on my rainbow.
 
I find this very disappointing. It had seemed that of the major professional sports leagues, NHL had been the most outwardly LGBTQ+ friendly. Now they appear to be caving in to the latest wave of homophobia whipped up by the politicians. Apparently Pride Nights are still on, at least for now, but I suspect that if you attend, you'd never know it-- you probably won't see rainbow colors anywhere. The young people who would feel supported by seeing a positive affirmation of their identity in sports will probably be the ones who will lose out the most.
 
The message of course...to all the young homo kids out there on the ice is that you'd better stay hidden and invisible because you will be bullied right through your playing career.

And from the teams and players?

What the NHL hasn't figured out somehow is that hockey is a dead sport. The demographic that created it and fed it from the 30's on is literally dying. Around here, you'd have a hell of a time raising enough kids to form a team and the game has been losing viewers every year...and not because of Pride Tape.

This sounds like the NHL's last gasp to hang onto the helmet heads who shot at cans of Blue Light a few months ago.

All it does is make the NHL and pro hockey seem even less relevant to younger people.

I thought the NHL was looking in the future and seeing a new demographic. The hockey fans of 2050 are not the people you see now and the NHL was reaching out to welcome a changing fanbase. The world of sports risk going the way of the dinosaur as the current fans age away.
