Truly no one is safe in the savage hermit kingdom of North Korea. Long in government, Jang Song-thaek has been suppressed by execution.

Kim Jong Un is third generation ruler in the totalitarian dynasty well known for recklessly destabilizing the balance of powers in Asia and its mercurial attitude towards the US and her allies. Lesser known is the network of prison camps maintained by the regime where thousands of political dissidents and their families have been sentenced for life, the persistent poverty endured by North Koreans, and the deeply cryptic inner workings of the Kim government.

Chances are, either Kim freaked out and pulled the trigger, or Uncle Jang really got to close to the fire.

We don't expect this to happen in the 21st Century.

Beheading political opponents should be a thing of the past. The Kims will go down as sociopaths like Henry VIII and Caligula before them.
 
North Korea isn't in the 21st century.


BTW, I almost referred to Kim as "Caligula Jong Un", but thought it might be a bit much --yet that is what N. Korea reminds me of.

It would be dramatic that's for sure. However, North Koreans do increasingly have access to consumer goods from China including films. They know of the bright flashy opportunistic world on the other side of the border. It wouldn't be totally from the dark ages to modern times. Older North Koreans also remember what it was like to be free, but there is not much time for divided families who remember being together.

It is rumored among defectors that she instigated her own husband's downfall to solidify her nephews reign. I wonder how many people the uncle sent to their death? It's a little hard to feel sympathy when one of the architects of this murderous regime becomes its victim.

What to do with them? Does someone know? German scenario will be impossible. Poor people! There are brainwashed, but they will be not happy, if tommorow the country will unite with South Corea. That's the biggest problem.
 
In North Corea sometimes people are absent for 20 years, and then again become an important member of the government. Certainly not after death, but after 20 years in a camp.
 
I'm more interested, what to do with North Corean people. How to help them to open their mind to the world? It will be traumatic to them. Their own elite like to watch Holywood movies, but the people are isolated from the world. How we can help them? It's a tragedy.
 
There must be a lot of insecurity among top officials now. If the uncle can be dragged out and executed, no one is safe. The countries in the International Criminal Court should indict him for crimes against humanity and offer a huge reward. The US has not joined and probably cannot constitutionally do so but we could suggest it to others.
 
But no one prosecuted General Franco. Maybe it's better to use such way? To give North Corean leaders that they will not be prosecuted and maybe in 2050 2 countries will unite. But the leaders must have guarantee that they will not be prosecuted.
 
In China the communists made reforms, because the knew that no one prosecute them for human rights.
And China now is better than 30 years ago.
To start the process of unification with South Corea, the leaders of North Corea must have quarantees that there will be no tribunal in Haague on them.
