Not Bad Rhianna...

Re: Rihanna's New Single!

After reading the lyrics and listening a few times, I wonder if this isn't really a song about suicide? Her boyfriend is dead, and now she's going to kill herself?

[Verse 1:]
Take a breath, take it deep
Calm yourself, he says to me
If you play, you play for keeps
Take a gun, and count to three
I’m sweating now, moving slow
No time to think, my turn to go

[Chorus:]
And you can see my heart beating
You can see it through my chest
And I’m terrified but I’m not leaving
Know that I must pass this test
So just pull the trigger

[Verse 2:]
Say a prayer to yourself
He says, close you eyes
Sometimes it helps
And then I get a scary thought
That he’s here means he’s never lost

[Chorus:]
And you can see my heart beating
You can see it through my chest
And I’m terrified but I’m not leaving
Know that I must pass this test
So just pull the trigger

[Verse 3:]
As my life flashes before my eyes
I’m wondering will I ever see another sunrise?
So many won’t get the chance to say goodbye
But it’s too late to pick up the value of my life

[Chorus:]
And you can see my heart beating
You can see it through my chest
And I’m terrified but I’m not leaving
Know that I must pass this test
So just pull the trigger

Throughout the song "he" is the voice of her boyfriend in her mind. "My turn to go", meaning he went before her. She's terrified of dying, but she's "not leaving", she's going to go through with it ("I must pass this test").

In verse 2, "then I get a scary thought, that he's here means he's never lost", she's doubting what she's about to do, because he's really still with her (in spirit).

Verse 3, "so many won't get the chance to say goodbye" (her friends and family to her), "but it's too late to pick up the value of my life", meaning it's a lost cause, she can't fix things.

Re: Rihanna's New Single!

^she wants to die? Mkay.
-----------------------------
My bad.
This
^you do realize that just because a song reaches billboard #1 and stays there for 3 months doesn't by any means make it a good song?

was actually for this:
^^^

Thats the same thing the HATERS like you said about Take A Bow, "oh its so boring," and then it went onto number 1 and stayed in the top 3 on billboard for months. And was also a worldwide smash.

So keep on hating we love it. All your hate makes the song even more successul.

didn't realize there was a 2nd page!

Re: Rihanna's New Single!

who are you to tell people what a "good" song is?

"good" is subjective you are no authority.

Good is whatever people like and is quality to them not "quantity " as someone said which made no sense.

If people didnt think it was a good quality song to them they wouldnt buy the song enabling it to be number 1 and they wouldnt request it on radio either.

A song doesnt magically reach number 1. Airplay and Sales make a song number 1.

Re: Rihanna's New Single!

I just listened again, and I think Metro Lyrics got one part wrong. The line sounds more like "It's too late to think of the value of my life". The meaning still stays the same though.

one word: conformism. The vast majority of people don't go discovering music on their own. They don't develop their own music tastes. They're lazy and they just look on Billboard to tell them what is good. This is commonly refered to as jumping the bandwagon. THAT's the reason why songs get popular.

note how most of the songs that reach reach the Hot 100 are virtually forgotten by the next year.
these songs are regurigated, played on end, and then they disappear.

that's far from a definition of quality if I do say so myself....

Are you totally clueless? I thought you had to be at least 18 to post here?](*,)

Re: Rihanna's New Single!

It's clear that a few of you in this thread failed english/literature class. This is evident since you do not know what a metaphor is.

You are probably the same people that kept saying,"why is she singing about an Umbrella"

Rihanna does not die at the end. The gun shot signals the end of the abusive/tumultuous relationship.

I am sleepy and going to bed now so i cant break down the song line by line for you right now; but ask an educated friend to highlight and interpret the obvious metaphors used in Russian Roulette.

Re: Rihanna's New Single!

Also like the writing or not the metaphor of the song was good, if you got it good on you if you didnt, well i'm sorry you arent the brightest bulb in the box

OMG!

You asked for alternate meanings behind the song and I gave my interpretation. Why does there have to be a metaphor in there? Why do you think it has to be about a relationship ending?

It sounds like you are trying to force the breakup with Chris Brown onto this song. Rihanna didn't write the song, so chances are it's not about her life or from her personal perspective.

IMO, my explanation makes a lot of sense.

I dont thihnk he listened to the lyrics.

Re: Rihanna's New Single!

She became a household name for singing "those songs anyone can sing" the same way Britney became a huge star singing songs anyone can sing. As long as the beat is nice, the lyrics are easy to repeat and the girl that's "singing it" has a two-inch waist, we're in the money.

Maybe that's the true problem I have, it's not with the actual song "Russian Roulette" itself but with Rihanna's less than ordinary voice singing it. I bet a more talented vocalist would have blown this crappy song out of the park and made it sound like a million bucks. But Rih-Rih's a weak vocalist so to pair her up with an equally weak song, the flaws immediately become clear as if they were bathed in Windex. Her "voice" is better pertained to fast club records and anytime she attempts a ballad, she falls flat every single time-vocally and artistically.

Meh, it's been established that none of that matters. So who cares if the new song is garbage; like Lex alluded to, people are buying and listening to this for the Rihanna brand name only. It could have just been a recording of her sitting on the toilet, taking a dump and it'll still shoot to the top ten. My feelings about the song don't even matter. :)

I feel the same about Beyonce and practically any record she has produced without Destiny's Child. Let's face it "Single Ladies" was lyrically garbage like "Umbrella", but people bought into it. It is what it is... :-({|=

Re: Rihanna's New Single!

The thing u describing has nothing to do with Rihanna but society, consumption, and business...

Don't put the blame on the girl, she's working, and making money thats bout it...

(even tho I agree)

Re: Rihanna's New Single!

I have to agree. The song is so-so at best. I'm surprised it's going to be used as her first single. Who knows, maybe it'll grow on me but after hearing it 10x already i'm really dissapointed.

Re: Rihanna's New Single!

Calling Umbella "lyrical garbage" reveals your IQ

Forget that it was nominated for a Song of the year Grammy which recognizes the years best song writing; It takes basic common sense to understand the meaningful and powerful message of Umbrella. Then again you dont even know what a metaphor is so its not surpizing you never understood Umbrella lol. You probably thought she was singing about an actual Umbrella :rotflmao:

Re: Rihanna's New Single!

I love this song.:D I hought I wouldn't like it but when It gets to the chorus, It picks up and I love that part!
