Forget that it was nominated for a Song of the year Grammy which recognizes the years best song writing;It takes basic common sense to understand the meaningful and powerful message of Umbrella. Then again you dont even know what a metaphor is so its not surpizing you never understood Umbrella lol. You probably thought she was singing about an actual Umbrella

There are metaphors in everything. The usage of metaphors is not: something new/original, something that requires a lot of intelligence, and something that defines good song writing.

I love Rihanna but the truth is her voice used to be very nasal. Its smoother now. She is like a real singer now if that makes any sense.

Song of The Year has absolutely NOTHING to do with popularity. Every year songs are nominated in that category that people never heard of.


Song of the year is a song writers award. It recognizes the years best songs lyrically.

Record of the year rewards the songs impact and success (popularity) and that is why every year Song of the Year nominees and Record of The Year nominees do not match up because Song of the year deals with just lyrical quaility and depth and seriousness, meaningfulness. It rewards the years best written songs and popularity has nothing to do with it.

Record of the year recognizes successful and popular songs.


Last year. Umbrella was the record of the year and Rehab the song of the year. However; they were inlove with Amy Winehouse so they gave her Record of the year too even though it never had half the impact or global success of Umbrella.

Um it's because they're indie. They aren't played on the radio. THEY WILL NEVER GET NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY. Why? Because they don't care about catering to every single person in the United States. Rihanna does.

I like Rihanna and everything, but her new single is kind of lame. It isn't horrible, but it isn't what I was expecting. She is wanting to move on from her last album, which is good, but this [Russian Roulette] isn't a good single. Where does she get off releasing a ballad like this as a lead single? Is she suddenly Celine or Whitney? No. I am not excited for her new album as much as I was before, but I still want to give it a chance
