Not Getting Married Today

It's my favorite song from Company (even more than The Ladies Who Lunch.)

I'm blanking on the actress (Beth something) who was in the original Broadway company, (She played the ditsy waitress in the TV version of Alice. [Armstrong?])

She does a much better job than Burnett, as much as I love Carol.

But the best version (in a Sndheim concert at CarnagieHall) was sung by Madelaine Kahn. She sang it faster than anyone else I've heardand yet every word was enunciated and she did it with perfect comedy timing.

Thanks prettyboysing! I thought I had figured out how to do that, but I still have no idea... :-)

Josher, I agree with you -- as much as I idolize Carol Burnett, she purposely slowed the song down and I think it loses a bit of its impact because of it. Madeline Kahn's is my favorite performance of the song, too. And watch her bits of business with the bouquet. Subtle and brilliant. (And it was Beth Howland who played Amy in the original Company, and yes, she was also Vera on the tv show Alice. She did a pretty damn good job of getting those words out quickly, too.) If you haven't heard the recording of this song on the 2006 Broadway revival, I highly recommend it! I'm baffled by the way Heather Laws spits out those words SO fast, yet every word is perfectly clear.

Though she only sang a portion of the song, I also love Alice Ripley's performance during the Kennedy Center Honors' tribute to Elizabeth Taylor from a few years ago. (I searched YouTube for it, but no luck.) She does this great modulation with the last note that I just love!

Okay, I'm now done with my essay on this song. I think. :D

^^Yes, I enjoyed the 2006 revival version too.

It was acted out better in the revival than in the original. The staging was much better. (And I loved the fact she was wearing black.)
