not to dampen the mood but movies to cry for

I'm not big on tear jerkers but I very recently saw a REALLY good documentary called Lady Kul El Arab. It was one that just took the wind right out of you.

Yeah, Brokeback Mountain.
East of Eden
Splendor in the Grass
Say Anything
Ghost (I know, I know...)

Schindler’s List immediately comes to mind.

There are movies that don't have sad endings, but still make me tear up. Examples include:
What Dreams May Come
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Big Fish
They're bittersweet, I guess you could say. They all have an element of sadness that runs through them.

There's also this documentary I saw a couple of years back. It's called A Lion in the House (2006.) It's available on Amazon. It's about five kids who have cancer and it follows their lives. It truly is tragic since you actually follow these kids as they die. You see what their families go through and the toll it takes on everyone. In the end I think three of them actually end up dying, and the cameras are there even at the funerals. I'm tearing up just writing about it.
This documentary is DEFINITELY worth watching if you can get your hands on it. The fact that these are children make it all the more sad. For example, if you look at the cover, there's a black boy and his mother. I think it was him who talked about how he goes out and drinks and smokes with his friends to escape from everything: the pain, the drama, the thought of dying. At that age! Why should children have to suffer like this? Can you imagine being that young and going through so much pain and wondering why you have that disease? Or if you have a child, imagine watching them deteriorate before your very eyes. And what can you tell them to console them? I cannot recommend this enough. The loss of innocence is heartbreaking.
