Chapter 31

Mary had done a very good job of seperating the boys toys and creating space in the livingroom. Moving some of the dinigroom chairs into the livingroom everyone had seats except Brian and Ty who sat in the floor with a twin in each of their laps. Mary's boys passed out the gifts. "Now before we start I have to admit that Max and I probably went a little over board this Christmas but each and every one of you deserve even more that what we are giving you. This is Christmas and for me the best Christmas I have had since you two were babies." Carl said pointing to Mary's boys. "We don't want anyone upset thinking that we are giving them too much. We are giving it from our hearts for everything you have done." Max said. "You can keep the Rolls Royce they got you honey." Daryl said to Mary laughing. The twins sat quietly while the gifts were handed out.

First up was Flo. The first gift was a needle point picture of Flo's cafe from the farmer and his wife. Next was a beautiful blouse from Mary and her family. Last but not least was an small box. It was from Carl, Max, Brian, Ty and the boys. In the box were two tickets to Nashville Tennessee with a room for 4 days and three nights plus a day pass to Dolly Wood. Flo was in tears. Ty did not know his name was on the box so he had gotten her a pair of rhinestone studded sunglasses.

Next up was the farmer and his wife. Flo had given the farmer a pair of bright striped suspenders and the wife a set of pot holders. The next two packages had Carl and his new family and Mary and her families names on it. The wife opened her box to find some pictures taken from a magazine. A note on top told her that she was getting the new bathroom she had wanted. The farmer opened his box and pulled out a picture of a large tiller. "Me and Carl got tired of trying to patch up that antique you have so we all chipped in and bought you a new one." Daryl said. For the first time in their lives Mary and Carl saw tears in both the farmer and farmer's wifes eyes.

Mary's boys get new iphones and gift cards for online music. Each one also got a certificate where Carl and Max had deposited a thousand dollars in each ones savings account. The boys were over the top with their new phones. The old flip phones they had were an embarrasment. Mary and Daryl were next. Mary opened the box and pulled out a card. Beneath that was a brochure. "Sis. You and Daryl are so special to all of us. You deserve this so no arguments. Go and have fun. We love you. Carl and Max." the card read. The brochure was for a seven day, six night cruise in Alaska. Mary had talked about taking this cruise ever since the boys were babies.

Next was the twins. They had an abundance of clothes and each one got a toy tractor trailer truck from the farmer and his wife. One had a tractor on it and the other was a grain trailer. Both boys jumped and ran to hug the farmer and his wife. Daryl didn't dare comment when he saw the tears in the farmer's eyes. The last two gifts for them were from Carl and Max. They tore into the boxes. Shawn was the first to jump and scream. He pulled out a pair of cowboy boots that were identical to his Uncle Carl's. Jumping up and down and squeeling Shawn quickly stopped in his tracks. A look of fear was in his eyes as he ran and jumped in Carl's lap. Carl wrapped his arms around Shawn. "Whats wrong...ohh. Uh guys hold up on the gifts a minute. Shawn and I will be right back." Carl said. Shawn was sobbing on Carl's shoulder as he entered the bathroom. Taking a wash cloth and running warm water Carl pulled Shawn's wet jeans off and wiped him down. "Its alright baby. Accidents happen." Carl said. "You not mad ?" Shawn said trying to compose himself. "No baby I am not mad." Carl said and kissed the little boy. "Now lets get you some dry jeans. I want to see if those boots fit you." Carl said. By the time they returned the once sobbing little boy was all smiles. He was in his favorite uncle's arms and he was not mad at him.

Next was Ty. Opening the box he had tears in his eyes. Handing his gift to Brian. Max and Carl had given him trwo open end round trip tickets to Georgia. Included was a check for a thousand dollars for expenses. Next was Brian. Opening his box he had numbered envelopes. The first envelope was a letter from Carl and Max stating that as soon as his divorce was final that the deed to the house he lived in would be signed over to him. Envelope two had a check from Max for ten thousand dollars. Brian just sat back trying to dry his eyes. "You missed one buddy." Carl said. 'This is too much already." Brian said. "Just one more envelope." Max said. Brian opened the envelope and in it was a letter with an offer for him and the boys to move to Wyoming to run the ranch. Brian could not speak. All he could do was look at his two uncles as he handed the letter to Ty. "Enough of that. What does it say ?" Flo said. Ty began to read. "Dear Brian. I hope that you know that your Uncles love you and your sons very deeply. After the first of the year Rexlan ranch will undergo a major expansion. We would like to offer you a position as ranch manager in hopes that you and our precious great nephews will join us here on the ranch and make your lives and your living here. With all the love we have. Uncle Carl and Uncle Max." it read. Ty almost lost Shane out of his lap as he lunged sideways to hug Brian. "Yes he will. Yes, yes he will." Ty said. "Are you sure ?" Max asked. "He's the boss." Brian smiled pointing at Ty.

"Before you two get your gifts we have a special gift for everyone. Everyone's is the same. I hope you like them. " Brian said handing the packages to the teenagers to pass out. Mary opened hers frist and began to gasp and to Ooh and Aah. Max hurt trying not to burst into tears. Carl lost out and had tears running down his cheeks. In each box were four pictures in different frames. One picture was the twins with Santa Claus that Ty had made. The next was a picture of Ty and Brian with Santa. The next picture was of Ty, Brian and the boys with Santa. The last was a framed picture of Carl, Max and the twins with Santa Claus. "This is the best Christmas gift ever." Mary cried. "Baby I didn't know the farmer and his wife would be here. I gave them your copy but I promise I will order your set next week." Ty whispered. "And you wonder why I love you so much." Brian whispered.

Max was next even in protest. The farmer and his wife gave Max and Carl a gift together. Max made Carl open it. There was a large needle point scroll. Giving Max one end and opening it up they read it together. "Rexlan Ranch. All who pass by are welcome to our home. Home is where the heart is." and in the bottom corner it said. Carl and Max Rexlan. "Sorry about that baby." Carl whispered. "Why ? I'm not. It's perfect." Max said gaining a kiss on the cheek from Carl. The next box was from Carl. Opening it up there was a brochure for a smaller cab over tractor with a finishing mower. "Since you insist on cutting the grass I wanted to get you something that didn't bring back bad memories." Carl said. "The next box had a magazine style book. It was a book of house plans. Max pulled it out and looked at Carl. "Baby. I told you that I had always wanted to build a house at the lake. I am going to have the trees cleared to open up the moutain view. Besides now that Brian and the twins are moving here sometime next year we will need a place to live. This house can be for them." Carl said with a worried look. "As long as its small." Max said with a smile. "Thats why you have the house plans book." Carl laughed. "I see now why I got an air conditioned tractor to cut grass now Its going to be a huge yard." Max laughed.

Finally came Carl. First was a large box. He opened it to find a large box marked Dell. "This is a computer system with the cattle, grain and land management program you wanted already loaded." Max said. Carl could only stare at the box. Next he was handed a small box. When he opened it he saw a Wyoming driver's license with Max's picture on it. "Take it out and read it." Max whispered. "Maxwell Steven Rexlan." it stated. "I had Bob change my last name. I hope you don't mind." Max whispered. Carl almost lunged at Max pressing his lips so hard against Max's. "This is the best present I could ever get baby and NO I am thrilled." Carl said. "Thats not all. " Max said handing Carl the next box. "Now when you open this gift I will need to explain part of it later." Max said. Carl was handed a wrapped shirt box. The teenagers got up and began passing out coats. Carl watched wondering what was going on before opening the box. In the box were three dealership drive out tags. "What is this ?" Carl asked. "To the barn everybody." Daryl announced. The twins were wrapped in their new coats and Ty and Brian carried them through the snow. One teenager walked behind the closed partition in the barn. Daryl and the other opened the door as the one inside cranked the truck and turned on the lights.

The doors opened and in front of Carl was the truck that he had seen at the dealership. In front of him was a brand new Ford F450 king ranch, crew cab, dual wheel, four wheel drive diesel truck. He sank to his knees and both twins ran to each side. "Unca Carl got a new BIG twuck." Shane shouted. "Baby." Carl whispered. "Later. But thats not all." Max said. Helping Carl up they walked to the back of the barn where he found two flat bed trailers. One had all of the equipment for fueling tractors and tool boxes to hold spare parts. Carl turned around and hugged Max so tight Max could not breath. "How did you do this ?" Carl asked. "You know I told you right after I got here that I sold some land ?" Max asked. "Yes." Carl said. "Well I sold that land to pay for this truck and these trailers. I ordered all this while we were in Georgia." Max said. "Baby that money was yours. You shouldn't have." Carl said. "Carl Rexlan. Max Rexlan loves you with all his heart and soul. I would sell everyrhing I had if it took it to make you happy. It didn't take all of it either." Max said. "Is it nap time yet ?" Carl whispered. "Down cowboy." Max whispered. "Unca Carl, Unca Carl. Shawn is already in your twuck. We want to ride in your big twuck. "Now you understand why Max demanded that the carport at the house was so big." Daryl said.

The rest of the group walked back to the house as Carl drove slowly with the twins standing in the passenger seat. Carl was still speechless Once Carl pulled the truck into the carport and got out he realized just how big the carport was. "How did you know how big Bro ?" Carl asked. "Mary and I went and saw the truck when it arrived. We opened all the doors and measured to make sure there would be plenty of room." Daryl said. Shane had crawled in the back seat and pressed the electric sliding window and was crawling out into the bed while Shawn stood holding the steering wheel. "Vrroom... Vrroom." he sounded "Alright you two be careful with Uncle Carl's truck." Ty said. The whole group inspected the truck with the farmer and Daryl stuck under the hood admiring the big diesel engine. "It rides like a Mercedes." Daryl said. "Oh so you have already driven it." Carl said. "Hey somebody had to get it from the dealership to my house. And then somebody had to get it here." Daryl laughed. "Alright you two. You still haven't given your gifts to your dad and uncles." Mary said. The boys jumped to the nearest adult.

Once back inside Carl was still almost speechless. His heart was still racing and it had all seemed too much. The first gift was to Uncle Max. Opening it he found a box full of peanut butter cookies. Hugs and little boys kisses were in order. Next was Carl. Opening his he found a box full of chocolate chip cookies. Little boy kisses were on the menu again. An envelope was handed to Brian and one to Ty. Brian opened his and pulled out two pictures. One seemed to be of the mountains and the other was anyone's guess. Once again little boy kisses were in order. Ty looked at his envelope and it said Dad. He handed it to Brian. "No. That one is yours." Mary said. "But...." Ty said. Opening the envelope Ty pulled out a picture. Opening it had a picture of a house. In front of the house it had two large stick figures on each side and two small stick figures in the middle. Ty looked at the group and then at Brian. Under each picture there were names. In the middle had Shane under one and Shawn under the other. Too one side it said Daddy. The other stick figure said Dad. Ty looked towards Mary with a questionable look on his face. Totally confussed one of th teenagers spoke up. "I helped them draw that one. I am the one that wrote the names. When we got to yours I ask if that was Uncle Ty ? They both said no. That was daddy on one side and Uncle Ty was dad now. I asked them two or three times. Shawn fianlly asked me if I didn't hear english." the teen said. "I have heard that before." Carl laughed. Ty's hands were shaking and his face was blank. "You don't like you pikure Dad ?" Shane said. "Oh baby.I love it. Are you sure about this one being dad ?" Ty said with a very shaky voice. "Silly. We have a daddy and if you going to be our other daddy we have to call you dad. Shawn seemed at ease but Shane was still about to cry himself. "Yep that one is yours and this one is Ty's." Max whispered to Carl.

After another round of dessert you could tell the farmer was getting tired. "We have just one more thing. If everyone can listen up for a minute me and wife have to say something before I go home and take my nap." the farmer said. 'Nap." Carl whispered. "Shhh." Max said. "First of all the wife and I want to thank you for inviting us to your home. This is a Christmas that neither of us will ever forget. We have one more wish. We have talked to Mary, Daryl and Flo about this." the farmer said handing Carl and Max an envelope. Carl opened the envelope and pulled out the copy of a will. "When we found out what you two planned to do for Brian and the boys, and now for Ty we wanted to do this for you and them. We don't have any close family. We know that you will care for our farm just like you do yours. When mother and I are both gone we want you two to have our farm and everything thats on it. There is the house that is not much but the barns are stable and it comes with fifteen hundred acres of land. All that we ask is that you remember us and that you help my wife here if something happens to me first. The second piece of paper is a lease for you to use at the farm exchange so that you can start farming my land this season. I am too old for crops. I have a new tiller now to play with and do my little farming." the farmer said. "I don't know what to say." Max said looking at Carl. Carl didn't speak he just walked over and hugged both the farmer and his wife at the same time. "You two have always been family to me." Carl said. "You have to us too son. I just want to see those two cute little ones at my house when they get moved here." the wife said. "Anytime you want them." Brian said from the back ground.

Max was loading the last of the dishes after making the farmer and his wife two large to go plates. Carl was thanking them and wishing them a Merry Christmas as they stood at the door with Flo. "Did you do this ?" Ty whispered to Brian. "No baby. The first I heard about was when you did too. Are you happy about it ? I am thrilled. I couldn't be happier." Brian said. "I am too my love. I can't believe how awesome this Christmas has been. " Ty said. "Well now that I am moving here there will be many more Christmas' like this." Brian siad. "No Christmas could ever top this one." Ty said.

Max had returned to the kitchen. Ty came in and walked up to him and hugged him and began to cry. "Hey, hey. I hope those are happy tears." Max said. "They are but its fear too." Ty said. "Fear ?" Max asked. "When I got off this morning I was hoping to have a great Christmas with the man I love and the two little boys I love dearly. Ten hours later he is moving here to live and the munchkins called me Dad." Ty said. "Its not a dream. I hope that you, Brian and the boys have an amazing life together." Max said. "I promise I will spend every hour of every day making sure they are happy." Ty said. "Its not just up to you buddy. Brian and the boys have to play their part to make you happy too." Max said. "Very well said Uncle Max." Brian said who had been standing behind Ty. Ty turned to look at Brian. "Is this all really true ?" Ty asked. "It is baby. Besides you are Dad now. Too late to back out." Brian said. Ty's hug went from Max to Brian. "Thank you." Brian lipped to Max. Max just lifted his fingers and blew Brian a kiss.

The doorbell rang and the twins raced to the door. Opening it quickly both boys screamed "Unca Joe." Joe and his wife had stopped by on thier way back from her families. The boys were jumping all over Joe and each had an arm pulling him with them to see the toys. Joe was grinning from ear to ear so non of the men tried to calm the boys down. Joe's wife stood with her arm's folded just watching as if she was disgusted. "Can I get you something to drink or eat ?" Max asked. "I don't think so." she barked. "Up to you." Max said and turned and headed back to the kitchen. "I did my part." Max said as he passed Mary. The boys had calmed down and Joe had broken free. "Merry Christmas guys." Joe said speaking to Carl and Max. "Meery Christmas Bro." Carl replied. "And what am I a ghost ?" Mary said as she walked up and hugged Joe. You could hear the sound of disgust from his wife. "And what's her issue today ?" Mary asked. "I bought her a new ring for Christmas and she wont wear it. She says its not big enough." Joe said. "Sorry about that Bro." Carl said. "Oh I am use to it." Joe said. "I'm sorry too." Max said. "Merry Christmas brother in law to be. I am so happy for you two." Joe said. "Here Bro. I didn't buy you a gift. I figured you could use this more." Carl said handing Joe and envelope. He then walked over and handed Joe's wife one which got a small smile from her. "What is this ? A check and cash ?" Joe asked. "Well the check is your christmas gift and the cash is from my husband. He found out that I had made you pay that money back and he threatened to divorce me before he even married me if I didn't give it all back." Carl said putting his arm around Max and pulling him to his side. "I told your little brother that our deal was between me and you and not him. Merry Christmas Joe." Max said. "Oh little Bro. "I am sorry Uncle Carl, sorry Aunt Mary but when she called them leaches I lost it." Ty said. Mary walked over and hugged Ty. "Never appologize for defending the twins or my boys. Back inside the house Ty sat on the loveseat with a whipped look on his face. As everyone entered the room he looked up. "I am sorry for ruining everyone's Christmas. That was not my intension." Carl called out.

It only took about ten minutes to get the livingroom and kitchen into the best order that it could be. "Don't worry about putting the toys in their room. Some will stay in the hosue and they will have to play with some in the barn. We can sort all that later. Plus we need to figure out the favorites when they get back." Max said. We will be back in two, maybe three hours." Carl said standing and taking Max's hand and pulling him to his feet. "You guys start a fire so it will be good and warm by the time the sun goes down. Oh and don't do anything that I had planned to do earlier with my honey while we are gone." Carl laughed.

Once the truck was fired up and backing out. "I thought you wanted a nap." Max said.
