November 1st 2014: The Day I Came Outta The Closet....

I came out to my parents yesterday. It was an nerve-wracking experience, but I feel all the better for it.

Both of my parents were accepting and supportive. My mum was initially a bit shocked, but she was happy for me.

When my dad was told (he was at work when I told my mum), he just shrugged his shoulders and said 'What difference does it make?'

I feel as if a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

To all of my friends on JUB: thank you for supporting me during this trying time in my life. It is genuinely appreciated.

Congratulations on coming out. It is nice that you have understanding parents. For many who come out, the fearful reaction of the parents can be the worst thing. I hope your future remains bright.

I think you will find this experience useful in other aspects of your life too. Coming out to parents is a tough nut to crack, but there will be other instances where you will have to decide when it is prudent to allow that personal knowledge or restrict it according to the situation. We have made great strides towards acceptance, but we still have a long way to go. Some workplaces are still somewhat hostile and it is important to keep in mind that this information about this part of your life is still very personal and there's no requirement that everyone around you has to know.
