God bless New York! They have such a wonderful hodge podge of people, that a candidate like Mr. McMillan could only come from there. I love the black gloves and that beard looks great. I'd vote for this guy in a second! Take a look and tell me what you think of him.

I thought I was watching a SNL skit. Jesus. I wonder what his position is on gay marriage.

Re: The Rent is Too Damn High Party

I'll combine the threads.

I like his mustache.

Awesome, isn't it?

Frequently parties like that have a position which in this case would boil down to "Who gives a shit? The rent is too damned high!"

Watching him reminded me of a little study of rent dynamics in college, prompted by a statement to Parliament by Winston Churchill to the effect that it had been shown that there was no point in lowering bridge tolls because very quickly rents for those who had to cross that bridge went up by the same amount -- but so did rents for everyone else. The result of the study was that rents bore little relationship to anything but what people could be gotten to pay, and what people could be gotten to pay depended most significantly on whether there was assistance available and in what amounts (in college towns, financial aid counted as assistance), and how much housing was available (usually determined by government, not by actual need).

I loved one landlord there who not just bucked but seriously fucked the basic current: after one year in one of his apartments, if an inspection showed it well cared-for and all your rent had come on time, you got a rent reduction! after two years, and three, and five, the same! And he could do it because, unlike 7/8 of the other apartment complexes around, his land the apartments sat on was long since paid for.

Of course the guy in the vid would have been awesome to have at the city council meeting when they actually took up the issue of forbidding rents "below the prevailing" (and in that college town, there wasn't a Republican on the council!).

Yeah -- the rent is too damned high. And right now, here, the rent is right at about fifty dollars a month less than you could buy the place for -- two years ago.
