When people said they hate moving, I would always wonder why- now I know. It's a process that is exhausting and expensive.

Being in transition between two homes, lugging luggage up subway stairs, heaving furniture around the room, ordering more furniture, buying things you need (did I mention moving is expensive) and than figuring out how to get things to your new place.

This is my first time moving and living on my own, least to say I was totally unprepared for the time and cost of moving.

At least I finally have my own place one year after moving here.:D

It gets worse over the years.

I went from throwing a few bits of furniture in the back of a pick-up for my first move to requiring a veritable fleet of trucks when we finally emptied out our place in the city and moved full time out to the country.

I'm glad that from here, it will all be dispersed by auction someday.

Yeah. I had friends who would do it every semester (including all three summer sessions). Even though they didn't really have to move the furniture, the actual moving must've been annoying. Packing up everything, unpacking it all, then finally packing it all back. Definitely don't be lazy with the process, lol.

Moving is the worst thing ever...even if the end result is living in a better house, better neighborhood, etc. The thing is, it's always kind of exciting when you first start to pack but by the time you're done, you've thrown away most of the shit you own out of sheer anger and frustration and have vowed to never buy anything again.

I dread my move whenever it happens. Most likely it will take at least three or four more years to accomplish. The amount of stuff that I must get rid of, first, is truly epic. I can't get rid of the stuff carelessly, because that's the difference between basically throwing it away, and very possibly bringing $200K to $300K which would actually be on the low end of the total value (even at wholesale). Trouble is, the better result involves thousands of hours of work.

And, among all the places I'm likely to move, the CLOSEST place is 460 miles from here, so it's going to be a major move.

Congratulations on getting your own place! :=D: :=D: :=D:

Congratulations on your new place! Are you going to take a couple pics so that we can see it? :)

What you are expressing is exactly one of the reasons why I don't know if I will ever move. I was looking at the costs if I were to ever decide to move and I was looking at it costing at least $50,000 after having to pay for the cost of selling the house and moving expenses. That is a lot of money to me. I'm glad that I like where I live. If I were to move, I would probably have to downsize quite a bit.

Packing is always the worst part for me. You have to physically confront every single object you own, decide whether you still need it, organize the boxes so you can unpack easily when you get there, etc.

I actually hired somebody to do the packing a couple moves ago, but it was a disaster, cause he didn't have a clue either.

I'm happy for you and your new place. As someone above said, take pics, Show us before, and after pics.

I guess I am odd, because I love moving. Finding a new apartment, one that once belonged to someone else, and making it your own. (Painting, draperies, etc...) Plus, if you were not too attached to your other furniture/stuff, it is a great chance to throw out old stuff that accumulated (making the move itself MUCH easier) and start acquiring new belongings. I have two pics in my JUB gallery of my apartment that I have now. Most of the stuff I got in the first year or two after I moved in here. Garbage picking. Really! Most of my furniture had former owners, who just did not want it anymore. If I ever have the chance to move, most of it will stay here or get thrown out. No loss. General rule in moving. If it won't fit into your car in two trips, don't bring it over. Most people make moving, more of a hassle than it has to be. :)

I hate moving because I either have to get relatives to help me or pay for people to help out.

My next house move is going to be slightly different though, alot of my furniture is getting past its prime (sofa, bed etc). So I will be getting it collected for donation to those thrift stores.

That will leave a single trailer of heavy furniture to move and 2-3 car trips of personal effects that I can do myself. Then I get to buy new furniture :D OLEH!

I work from home so it is not just household furniture that would need to be moved if I moved. And some of my furniture is huge. Some of it is custom made. And then I have some art work that means a lot to me as well. I would not trust people off the street. I have an armoire upstairs and they had to bring the movers in several times to look at it and see how they were going to get it upstairs. My stairway is wide but it turns and the furniture piece is really big. They ended up getting 3 people, one of the guys was huge (muscle wise). They managed to get it upstairs without damaging anything. They had to be extremely strong, steady and take their time to do it one step at a time with rests in between. I'm concerned that it might not go as well going the other direction. The thing is handmade with mahogany and other really high quality woods. My home is full of furniture and I don't live in a small place. It would probably cost at least $15k just for the moving expenses. The highest costs would be the cost to sell the house.

I am amazed at what professional movers are able to do. I have seen some of the neighbors move everything out in 1 day.
