No, I do not want to see it. Nor do I condone it. I would rather see him rot in jail for the rest of his life.

But, I can understand that the people of Iraq and the region may need to witness the demise of Saddam. What an evil human being.

Although he has been a total barbarian to others in his own life, it feels barbaric to my sensibilities to end his life this way.

Saying that, the planet will probably be better off without him.

If this same question was asked in Iraq today, what would the majority of people say? I think most would want to see it. However I personally would not want to witness his execution.

Actually from the newscasts I saw this morning, Iraqi Shia are satisfied with the verdict while their Sunni are angry.
That's why I thought televisong the execution would inflame some and cause more divisiveness.

because Saddam was a Sunni and he ran an apaarthied government. he supressed the Shia, and as much as I hate the Shia they wont feel safe until all the vestiges of the old regime are gone, including Saddam's very life. the man brought this upon himself.

and the Sunni know that if he goes their hopes of running a minority controlled government will be next to nill and that is not a pleasant thought for the Sunni moderates.

it may be the undoing of modern Iraq, but i have always thought that Iraq needed to be taken apart anyway.

kurdistan, persia and the old southern provinces need to rise again as separate entities or the fighting wont ever end.

Saddam's death is just the next step in that unavoidable eventuality.

lets switch this around....

if an american president gassed new england because they are too liberal (not entirely unbelievable at this point... scary thought) would the people of New England want to see him die?

I don't know if it would be a majority thing, but I tend to think that it would be close.

why the hell not?? nobody should shed tears for sadam but i find it sad that bush is getting away with his war crimes while sadam hangs for them...so really, there is no justice now is there? or there is some justice but not a hell of a lot...

I don't support the death penalty for anyone. I don't understand how a conservative can oppose abortion and then turn around and support killing people in the name of the state. Yeah, I'm a conservative AND a Republican. I know that disqualifies me from having any kind of reasoned discussion with most of you.

However, I so support Saddam Hussein being hanged. It wasn't a US decision, it was by the Iraqis.

More importantly, I'd like to know if any of you are offended by the comparison of President Bush to Saddam Hussein.

It just scares me that some people like James1200 think that the two are equivalent.

500,000 Iraqi's have died since the invasion.

that makes Saddam's death toll seem rather small, especially when you consider that Dubya said he invaded to free the Iraqi people from a murderous regime and bring peace and security to them.

having said that...

theres a big difference from dying at the hands of your enemy and dying at the hands of your leader.

I hate Dubya for his ridiculous wars and I hate him for trying to deprive gays of our civil rights, but he has not turned the guns of the US army on its own population.

I am not offended by the comparison, and I think both men are pretty high on the evil scale, but at the end of the day its still apples and oranges.

Pretty much what I was going to write.

well instead of being offended that i think bush and sadam are the same austin40acres, think for a minute. sadam killed hundreds of thousands of innocent iraqi's...bush killed hundreds of thousands of innocent iraqi's...sadam started an unjustified war against iran that killed millions on both sides...bush started an unjustified war that's killed thousands on both sides...i guess since overall, sadam has killed somewhat MORE inncocent people he's worse in that way hitler was worse than mussolini, so you got me there.

i swear it's the weather in new england that helps us to think clearer than the rest of this country...or maybe it's cause we like book learnin' up here.

Do I want to watch Saddam hang???
No.

Andreus - I can understand and support your position on this issue.
Let the fucker hang.
I hope his death will provide some healing and closure to the families of his victims.

My only concerns:
I do not want to be a witness to his death.
I hope that the inevitable media circus surrounding his execution does not cause my 6 year old niece and my 8 and 10 year old nephews to become witnesses to his death.

No, absolutely not. Hitler, Mussolini, Hussein, Stalin, Lenin, and Bush are ALL morally equivalent.

I don't know what I was thinking.

There's absolutely no difference between killing innocents in order to maintain tyrannical power and causing innocents to be killed in the EFFORT to try to empower people.

While we're at it, we should add Harry Truman to the list of tyrants. Think of how many innocent Japanese he killed at the end of WWII. Don't forget John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson for starting and perpetuating the killing of innocents in Viet Nam.

Let's not forget President Clinton's assault on innocent Serbians from 30,000 feet! Thank heavens he stopped the assault on innocents in Somalia by sacrificing the lives of US service members.

God, why should the United States even exist? The US is just as much a tyrannical murderer of innocents as any other dictator around the world. What was I thinking???

So, you win, I'm an idiot. (Soilwork can insert the appropriate comment here.)

We should NEVER fail to make the moral equivalence between the United States and evil, murderous dictators and their regimes.

Bush the Elder, Clinton, Bush Jr. are all no different than Idi Amin.

We should hate them all and make certain that everyone the world over knows that the United States is evil.

You're absolutely right, James 1200.

I apologize whole-heartedly for being offended by your comments.

i'm gonna ignore your stupid sarcasm and accept your apology and hope you've learned something.

japan attacked us...iraq never did. we attacked a sovergin country and are now forcing democracy down the throats of people who aren't ready for it...i guess you're all for going around and overthrowing any tyrannical dictator? i know it's hard but think austin...sadam was evil yes, like hundreds of others but you know what...he ran a secular state that al qaeda despised as much as they despised us...by overthrowing him, we've allowed something he never did...the invasion of iraq by al qaeda and the expansion of militant islam into yet another middle eastern country...we can't be a moral nation and go around attacking countries because we don't like their governments...well, we can but we'll turn the world into the sort of hell that it's turning into...and cause more terrorism which we're also doing.
