  • Hi Guest - Did you know?

Nudity

There are furry animals in both hot and cold environments. (The Lion?)

I was merely questioning. To me atheism and the lack of belief in God/Purpose seems to require a stance that morality is soley human construct and yet atheists can still have very strong if unjustifiable notions about human morality.

1. So? I would think different animals evolve differently...

2. Morality IS a human construct, but that doesn't mean anyone is above it just because they say that.

So the real question you wanted to ask, instead of "Why do we wear clothes?," is "If there is no god, what authority over morality is there?"

To answer that, society as a whole is the authority over that.

why would you shoot anyone in the first place?

^actually the answer to the question 'what authority over morality is there?' could also be 'your conscience'..

your conscience is the only thing that can help you if you dont believe in the popular belief that there is some supernatural power [god] which governs us

I agree, walkies, to a point, but your conscience has to get an idea of morality from somewhere...

^thats where punishments come in to picture..if your conscience isnt clear..then fear might deter you from doing something [which according to you may not be wrong [gosh this is so off topic but i wasnt the one asking questions and shaping the conversation]

Yes, but the fear has to come from somewhere.

Morality starts out externally and then moves internally as one ages...

^fear of punishments...fear of dying, getting hurt, spending life time in jail etc..morality plays very less part there

Morality ought to be enforced by the mutual recognition of the fact that each one of us owns himself. All morality (and mental health) can be derived from that.
The basic principle arising from that is in essence the "Golden Rule": treat others after the fashion you'd have them treat you. Another way to put it is "Do no harm", because essentially we all would like to do as we please without anyone harming us, and thus should not harm anyone else. It's a case of "I own myself -- so I can do what I want!", except that everyone else owns himself, so what we do had better not tread on someone else's self-ownership; to do so means we've ceded our rght not to be trodden on, either.

So... nudity? There's no harm at all in public nudity. We're the most prudish society in the history of the world in that respect, but that's out of subjective and religious reasons degraded into custom, not out of reason.

Murder? Well, duh....

Because most people are ugly and we don't want to see them.

Yes.....Thats is Very True, I see people everyday, that i would much rather die than see naked....im very comfortable being naked however.

^So what if you're not in supermodel shape?

People not liking your body is as ridiculously subjective as people not liking your haircut or your t-shirt.

And as with haircuts and t-shirts and everything else, they can go fuck themselves.

Actually being naked here in Toronto at minus 12 has it's advantages.

It's virtually impossible to sit on your balls and wreck yourself and pan-handlers never approach you looking for change or a cigarette...Perhaps because they can see you don't have any??

I think people also miss the concept of living in a city and waking around naked whilst other people are naked, and maybe ill...

and the dirt in the cities, pollution, broken glass etc....

I think it is safe to say that nudity died when cities where born, and with a few exceptions (some Norther European cities) it is still true

Personally, I see clothing as just another arrogant attempt of humanity to distance themselves from animals.

And, since I have to blame something on religion; people were wearing very little clothing back before the middle ages when christianity became the bigoted crap-fest it is now and started telling people how to run their lives.

*goes back to his hot cocoa*

well, i for one look a hell of a lot better with clothes on (though that's not sayin much ;))
