Every time I start to get an exercise routine together I go down with a cold. I'm obviously doing something wrong - does anyone have any suggestions?

I've been vegetarian for 30 years and am not about to switch back to meat, but could there be a connection?

What kind of exercises and where are you exercising?

My schedule means I try to work-out from home, where I have a rowing machine, a swiss ball and some hand weights. I'm really not ovetdoing it, but get sneezy and run down if I get into a decent run of exercising for a week or do.

I do miss running - really kept younger me's weight down. Terrible for my knees, though.

My question was to get at whether you're picking up small colds at a gym or whether you're having an allergic reaction. Gyms are beneficial to overall health but there's also pretty germy places. Lots of guys with less than stellar hygiene and workout equipment that doesn't get cleaned often enough can transmit a lot of colds, flu and other viruses.

If you're working out at home, I'd be more inclined to think that you have a dust mite allergy or that something in your home is triggering an allergy.

Probably the way to know for sure is to exercise away from your home and see if you have the same reaction. If you don't have a reaction, then you're allergic to something in your home.

There is a rare syndrome where exercise can trigger histamine release. But that's very rare.

Thank you, the notion of it being allergy based hadn't occured to me. It possibly doesn't help that I work with the public and every second person I've seen today has had a streaming cold!

I seem to have this problem -- it's associated with the heat generated by the activity. Hot baths do something similar.
