I am looking for the best place to be gay, near the ocean, safe from earthquake, energetic, friendly, spiritual, and diverse :P.

Thanks ahead for the advises.

Seattle is not safe from earthquakes.

Otherwise, you can find these things in both places, to varying degrees, but it depends on how you want to live.

Seattle isn't as obviously diverse as NY, but it has its diversity too - the 98118 zip code is purported to be the most racially diverse zip code in the US.

Both are gay friendly.

Seattle is more polite but I don't think it's more friendly - in fact its rather the reverse and I've known a number of people who have left because it's hard to make friends here -- a phenomenon sometimes called The Seattle Chill.

NY is more energetic than Seattle by far.

I do agree with MercuryJones that NYC would be more diverse and might be better in that way.

Sorry, but that's in Seattle too. We even have a sign.

NYC for me, it's the most diverse city in the nation. Moving there next year; got my countdown clock going.

Are you saving your money up? If not start saving now. NYC is a great place but the rent is high. You don't want to move there only to move back to Iowa. Consider living with some roomates or getting a sublet in the outer boroughs to keep your costs down.

Ya me too ^^ I want to know how high the rent is NYC compared to San Francisco and Seattle. I like the west coast more space. NYC seems a little bit.... quite clustered !oops!

NYC is expensive if you insist on living in Manhattan. Commutes are longer for cheaper places, and you should expect to live in less space overall.

On the upside, you don't have to spend as much time IN your living space, because there's plenty to do, and a lot of it is free or very cheap. It has more theatre than any place in the US. And just walking through the city is interesting.

As for climate...well, it's damned damp in Seattle. Nice climate if you like slugs! OTOH I understand it never gets really hot there (in grim contrast to NYC). No one (NO ONE) moves to NYC for the climate.

Actually I think Queens (a borough of NYC) is the most diverse place in the entire world. I bet you could find someone in Queens whose mother is an Inuit and whose father is an Australian Aborigine! (I might be exaggerating a LITTLE.)

NYC also has more gay people than any other city. Everyone from hideous places like Des Moines* runs away either here or San Francisco...and San Francisco is even more expensive to live in.

* I'm teasing.

^ ^ None taken ^ ^. The only things to do around here is jacking off  I plan to visit NYC and San Francisco but I heard people in the Bay Area is very friendly compared to the hustle bustle in NYC. Friendliness is everything to me because I know no ones in any of the places. Bonus to places that have spiritualist church or Wiccan for that matter. :P

NY definitely has the most gay people - but Seattle has the second greatest percentage of LGB people, right after San Francisco.

As far as percentage goes, NY isn't even in the top 10. But NY has about 4 times as many LGB people.

People are freindly in NYC just as people are freindly in San Francisco, Chicago or Boston. New Yorker's will help you out if you need directions. Friendliness comes down to the individual not the city.;)

I think there are a couple of things that contribute to the impression that New Yorkers are unfriendly.

1. The city is filled with beggars and scam artists. You have to get through people's shield for those before they'll talk to you.

2. NYC is so densely populated that it's only possible to live here if you leave each other alone. People generally don't look at each other or notice each other (blatantly), because it's almost impossible to be alone...so we grant each other "virtual aloneness" to compensate. It's a cultural thing, often mistaken for unfriendliness by people from the Midwest, where acknowledging the presence of other people is considered more polite. If you did that in NYC you'd do nothing else!

In my experience NYers are friendly. Seattleites are more polite, but that's all.

Numerous friends from NY and Chicago have left Seattle because they had a hard time making deep friendships here. There's a lot of "sure, let's get together some time" but no follow up. (And yes, even though they were friends of mine I was not a very good friend either.)

Sir Ron votes for NYC.....

It really is the center of the universe.

It's not cheap, and it is crowded, but if they don't have it, you don't need it! :D

I heard Brooklyn is the "hood". Is it true? Where is gayest and most affordable part of town? ^ ^ Thanks for the advises. It really helps.

What does $100,000 a year in NYC mean?

Brooklyn is huge. It has more people than Alaska; by itself it would be the sixth largest city in the US.

Its neighborhoods range from if not the hood at least pretty hood-y to Very Posh. I'm no longer sure where the cheap places are, so I'll let someone else answer that.

It means you're doing OK, unless it's your rent.
