  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

NYC or Seattle? ^^

(but stay clear of Staten Island, the things people say about it are, sadly, true in many cases. I have family there I don't even like being associated with, they're just gross. And you literally live in a dump).

To be fair, they ARE finally closing Fresh Kills. It was only reopened because of 9/11.

And btw, for those of you who don't know, 'closing' means "covering the whole thing with a thick layer of topsoil and planting grass."

they did that in the town where I grew up in north jersey... it actually worked out pretty well, you'd never know the grass hills were covering trash.

There's one in...I think Newark?...where they had to put vents in to release the methane from the garbage decomp slowly (to avoid massive inextinguishable underground fires, generally acknowledged to be a Bad Thing). Since the closed landfill became a public park, they hired an artist to design the vents (as long as there were enough of them, it didn't much matter how they were placed. The artist elected to lay them out as a henge, with the usual solstice and equinox sight lines.

Centuries from now, I can just see it: "Trashhenge...who built it? And WHY?"

Brooklyn is the epicenter of everything awful in the universe.
Not everywhere in Brooklyn is like Bed Stuy..

My old neighborhood in Park Slope has been pretty much surrendered to yuppies..They've done some nice things with it.Some of it I don't get,but what the hell, the torch has been passed to a new group of people to make it their home now..

Wow, you must have had a bad time in Brooklyn. What a lot of nonsense.

There are bits of Brooklyn that are nasty, and bits that are really nice. Like I said, it's big.

there are parts that are fine, I just really really hate hipsters (aka: williamsburg) ;)

I know what you mean. They are a nauseating bunch..

Yeah, you're going all over the map Soulseeker.

The whole west coast has earthquakes. I'd stick with NYC if you've always wanted to live there. Live where you want to live. Not where magazine editors/ real estate brokers say you should.

Chelsea is the "official" gay neighborhood of NYC and East Village is nice also. Manhattan rents though are high below 125th Street. Even Harlem is starting to get expensive. You'll definitely need roomates if you decide to rent in Manhattan, you can thank Sex and the City for making every single woman want to move to Manhattan and driving up rents for the rest of us.:-)

Brooklyn is a great place to live and despite all the hipsters doesn't have Manhattan's price tag (yet). It's a good alternative to Manhattan. Brooklyn Heights is very nice but a bit on the expensive side. I'm looking in Park Slope and Carrol Gardens as they are nice and more affordable area. You can also check out Jersey, NYC's unofficial "6th borough." Namely Jersey City and Hoboken.

You should really have no problem finding like minded gay guys in any of the five boroughs as NYC is a gay "mecca" city. Possible the gay mecca of the nation.

If your income is $100,000 than a single person can live well off of that, even in New York. You should take a look at the City Data and Wired New York forums. Lots of helpful info there.

Good post,about covers everything..

I heard New York is extremely cliquish. Is it true? ^^ How do you fit in NY for an Asian eccentric Pagan?

I don't know where a pagan community is,but if your looking for an Asian neighborhood, try Flushing.(Queens) You'll be up to your ass in Asians out there..

is it just me, or does it seem silly to move to one of the most diverse cities in the world for the purpose of surrounding yourself with people exactly like you?

It's not just you, but I disagree. It's a way to have home turf, to lessen the impact of the culture shock. Then he can venture out into all the diversity, get used to it slowly, and eventually decide whether he wants to stay in the "home" enclave, or move in with the Kazakhstani Lesbian transsexual who does Celtic knotwork batik and her ultrafemme half-African-American-half-Fijian girlfriend the hedge fund manager.

They play croquet in the garden on Sundays, weather permitting.

LoL

I'm considering moving to Portland since it's so much cheaper than DC. I'm a staunch atheist/anti-theist, wear t-shirts with sports logos all the time, insist on drinking stouts, and love eating meat.

Would I get eaten alive there? :c)

atheist will get you an automatic pass, oregon has the least amount of organized religious people in the Union, on the other hand the sports stuff will be frowned upon unless you're into soccer, rugby, or martial arts, plus side beer capital of US, some chicks here will out stout and porter you!!! meat is ok just better be local and tasty!!!

I havent really experienced the "Freeze" but i dont live downtown either. it probably affects women more that have moved here from out of the area.
theres no income tax and many people live north of seattle and commute

dont forget bellevue which is basically a skyscraper suburb of seattle
if i were to describe seattle, its like new england or iceland, without the cold winters

I suggest Atlanta. I recently read it is the "gayest city in the USA according to The Advocate.

The beach is just a few hours away, south to the Gulf or east to the Atlantic ocean. You'll be in the SE, so you'll get more spiritual advice than you really can use, and the people are really friendly. There is a lots of gay entertainment too.

Pagan?!? PAGAN?!? PAGAAAAAN?!?
How dare you consider any other false divinity but the false divinity of:
*The Slovenly Father
*The Secondary Son
*The Splattered Spirit
...
...
True followers of the Slovenly order know no locational constraints, even though Skiddadle, though boring, would less impede your Slovenly energy than the pace of New Yevon. Even though New Yevon is closer to my ministry...
Slovenly even has regular television ministry in Skiddadle.

Music to our ears. Listen and be cleansed.

Mother Slovenly, Forgive me for I have sinned. ^^ But I need opinion from others too. My life doesn't end after the bell of Sloppiness tolled. ^^

Oh yes it does.
Sloppy brought you in...
and he will
Take
you
out.

Be careful Mother Slovenly, I can voodoo the shit out of you ^ ^

Too late I'm countering with the defense spell:
"Who do that voodoo? Woo, woo! Ain't you, boo!"

If it were me, I'd pick Seattle, just 'cause I'm more of a West Coast type of guy. Easygoing, laidback, love the outdoors, would wear Birkenstocks except they're such a pain to wear. Into high tech, intellectualism, the "next big thing".

The downside to Seattle is it's always cool and damp. If you don't move, moss will grow on you. Literally. If you own a house, periodically you'll have to go up on the roof and knock the moss off.

But, it has lots of Pacific Rim influence, very neighborhoody, and very interesting. If I weren't already in love with Colorado, Seattle would be my next choice. :)
