Obama's Awkward Dance On Gay Marriage

Ugh. This again. Do you want a Republican elected into office in 2012? How soon people forget that the gay marriage issue is a large part of what got Bush another four years. Get off Obama's back about gay marriage until that second term is in the bag.

So you'll vote for him on the baseless assumption that he'll do something about gay marriage? What a sheep.
 
Something tells me his position will finally evolve January 20, 2013 . . . or at least sometime after that date. And maybe that's for the best, as long as it means he is still in office January 20, 2013.

As John Kennedy said, the power of the president lies not in constitutional authority, but in having a bully pulpit with which to convince people to do what they should be doing anyway.

GWB used his bully pulpit to convince America that we gays are an abomination unworthy of treatment as human beings. He was astonishingly successful in whipping up hatred and intolerance against us, and in getting such hatred codified into the laws of many states. In using his influence in this way, GWB inflicted substantial harm on America.

As a rather more enlighted individual, Obama owes this nation the benefit of enlightened leadership on gay rights. And that means unqualified support for gay marriage (the only logically defensible position). It is the president's responsibility to help guide this issue to success nationally, just as Governor Cuomo is doing for New York.

Actually, it wouldn't be a vote on the assumption that he'll do something for gay marriage. This president has already done more for gay civil rights (including marriage) than any previous president in history.

As I said above, it is the responsibility of a president to guide the nation to do what is right. That doesn't mean remaining silent until after you're elected and then speaking up. It means helping to convince the nation of where we need to go, and what we must do to get there.

I'd vote for him on the assumption that he's more likely to help us than any of the leading Republican candidates, many of whom are more likely to try and take away our rights.

Is that all you care about? Sounds very selfish. Aren't you more worried about electing someone who could actually fix the economy?
 
I've always thought that he should have garnered support for signing into law a Civil Unions bill or something.

Since, as a politician, he isn't going to go out on a limb with marriage, this could have been a viable option.

Don't know if ANY Republicans would have come on board for that - I suspect not.

Pragmatism and realism will always inform political decisions at the highest level. If it isn't politically expedient or advantageous, I guess nothing gets done.

I'm sure that the calculation in the corridors of power in Washington would have been different if we were a 25% minority instead of a 5% minority (or whatever the ratio is) but regrettably we are a small enough group that we can be 'handled' without concrete action.

Riiight, because an economy that took eight long years to fuck up can be fixed in two and a half right? :rolleyes: It's always easier to cause a problem than it is to correct it.

But really, that's not even what this thread is about. Gay marriage is something that few politicians with such authority will actually fight for, and I think you and I both know that Obama is infinitely more likely to be on our side than a single Republican with any decent chance of victory.
 
I have to agree with him to a certain extent.

I've said it times before: let marriage be the union of men and women under G-d and performed in a church. Remove it from state, federal recognition. If the couple wants government recognition of the marriage, they get a civil union license.

This way, the religious nut-jobs can still have 'the sanctity of marriage' and everyone else who is gay or non-religious can simply get a civil union.

Absolutely! That's been the basis of my point. I really think a big part of the problem is the hang-up so many have on the word 'marriage' when applied to gay couples.

I agree that there is a big hangup with the word "marriage," but I think it is important for gays to insist on obtaining marriage rights.

I have noticed that many people who oppose gay marriage claim also to support gay civil unions. (In fact, that is the president's awkward position). Then, in the next breath, these people will frequently claim "but it's the same thing!"

If it's the same thing, how could you be opposed to the one and support the other?

I think there is a psychological need on the part of some people to believe gays are inferior to straights. And one way to justify that thinking is by making sure gays can never "marry." You know, like they can. Because they're better than us.

I hope Obama doesnt win a second term and we get a republican. I am so SICK of hearing people complain out of ignorance.
 
Some local gay rights politics for you guys:

Here in Nashville, our Metro(city and county combined government for Nashville) council voted on, and passed a bill outlawing employment discrimination based on sexual orentation and also offered protection for the trangendered.

So our wonderful, just elected Republican majority state legistature is a bunch of biggoted assholes. Along with our biggoted douchebag governor. They crafted a law that makes it illegal for local municipalities to pass anti discrimination laws for gays, lesbians, transgendered, etc.

So now our progressive local law has been superceded by the state law. All of this is tied up in a lawsuit of course, costing the taxpayers millions of $$$$. Not sure how this lawsuit will swing, as I am not familiar with the state constitution(the violation of the state constitution is the basis for the lawsuit)



So yeah, go vote Republican and watch our rights get stripped away. The reason Obama hasn't done much on our issue is he doesn't have the necessary political capital right now. He used all of his favors and good will getting healthcare reform passed. Now he has to get relected, and IMO the general public isn't ready to embrace a president who totes gay rights as one of his key policy issues.
