Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Anybody know of any good internet communities or websites that deal with OCD? Like an online support group or something?

Thanks in advance! :D

I hope you're able to find what you're looking for Henry...I would even try entering the words or phrase into a serach engine...Don't we all have some sort of "disorder"? Most people don't even realize it..

Hoang Anh is a good example of someone who has overcome this condition.

Doesn't anyone know of Hoang Anh's inspiring recovery ? She is now a pilot !

I think that getting into therapy is a better idea from my personal experience. I noticed that myself and other people on these OCD sites end up feeding off one another to ask for reassurance on a constant basis that their fears are irrational. It really sets off a vicious cycle. I think you'd be better off talking to a Psychiatrist and a Social Worker instead from my personal experience dealing with the disease.

I can think of two people who haven't chimed in who have mentioned in other places that they deal with OCD issues. I think HT44 has a good point that actually working with professionals is "above and beyond" interwebs-based-support groups. The right psychiatrist might be able to help you find the right meds, and the right psychologist/social worker might help you work through some of your compulsion/rituals.

I don't envy you at all. Best wishes.

I'm 19 and have had OCD all my life. It significantly worsended around the age of 14.

What pisses me off more than anything is the assumptions people make of the disorder. I think its fair to say most people in the dark about OCD presume its to do with a neurotic person and their "quirk" regarding cleanliness and order (the state of my bedroom defies this stereotype alone.)

Always comforting to read of other people going through the same thing. If you need to chat, feel free to PM me. :-)

Tygre what did you mean when you said, "I don't envy you at all."

Hey, I'm sorry it's taken me this long to reply to this. I didn't realize I had a direct reply.

I'm pretty sure that what I was thinking at the time was, I just don't envy anyone who either has to do the work etc. to "work through" or around or whatever, OCD. It's a big serious deal. But I thought your words about getting professionally qualified assistance beyond "peer support" was spot-on.

Hope you're well!

Hmm, I'm not sure how I feel about the "regular therapy" comment.

Is "regular therapy" not counselling? I've had CBT and found it very useful in combatting my OCD. I was showering 3 hours per day but now only take around 20 minutes.

One therapist of mine said some doctors believe patients should undergo psychotherapy in order to "find out WHY" but she personally felt it useless (no surprises there, she chose to train in CBT.) She has a point though, OCD therapy is about getting rid of the damage it has upon your life and others.

And sometimes, there isnt a reason WHY. I've had OCD all my life and can't pin point any particular stressor that caused it. Sure, I can ponder but will it get me anywhere? I dont know...

Just throwing the idea out there I guess!
