Eminem, Lady Antebellum Expected to Lead 2011 Grammy Nominations

The nominees for the 53rd annual Grammy Awards won't officially be revealed until Dec. 1. But with the eligibility period having closed on Sept. 30, the contenders are now clear, with early favorites and intriguing storylines already emerging.

According to our survey of record executives and industry observers, the 2011 Grammys will likely field its strongest and most competitive collection of record and song of the year nominees in recent memory. While this may lead to a Grammy night filled with memorable, over-the-top performances, it's bittersweet news for the industry, as it mirrors the shift in the marketplace away from albums and toward the less profitable commodity of singles.

Many experts project Eminem as this year's potential across-the-board winner, as his album sales remained strong in 2010. Here's a preview of possible nominees in the four main categories:

SONG AND RECORD OF THE YEAR

Nearly everyone surveyed agreed this was a superb year for singles, especially for pop. There was also consensus that four songs would face off on Feb. 13, 2011, for song and record of the year: Eminem and Rihanna's collaboration, "Love the Way You Lie"; Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now"; Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind" and Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance." "These are all formidable singles," says Warner Bros. senior VP of digital Jack Isquith, who hailed them as "meaty, impressive, career-defining records."

Other top tracks cited by multiple executives include Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" (eligible for record of the year but not for song), Katy Perry's "California Gurls," Usher's "OMG," Sade's "Soldier of Love," B.o.B's "Airplanes" and Florence & the Machine's "Dog Days Are Over."

Last year, Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" won song of the year while Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" took the record prize.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR

In the album of the year category, Eminem's "Recovery" is the clear favorite in a subpar field. "This is Eminem's year," says Billy Mann, who co-wrote and produced last year's showstopping Pink hit, "Glitter in the Air." "He brought his best game and then some. The public can feel it, and the industry can feel it." To date, "Recovery" has sold 2.7 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Los Angeles Times chief pop critic Ann Powers says Eminem's comeback story, as well as the fact that his album was both commercially successful and critically acclaimed, will resonate with Grammy voters. "He's a major figure in pop history," she says, "and he seems to have really grown into himself."

Another leading contender is the Carole King/James Taylor album "Live at the Troubadour." While live sets traditionally fare poorly with voters (1994's "MTV Unplugged: Tony Bennett" is the last in-concert title to win the category), "I would watch out for that record," Glassnote Records head Daniel Glass says. The album has sold 453,000 copies since its May release.

Other albums cited include Sade's "Soldier of Love," Jay-Z's "The Blueprint 3," Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now," Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs," Usher's "Raymond v. Raymond" and two from recent Grammy winners: Herbie Hancock's "The Imagine Project" and Robert Plant's "Band of Joy."

Powers thinks Sade's album is a strong bet. "It's a gold-plated release," she says. "It sold well [1.3 million copies], it was well-received critically, and she's a classy artist."

Last year, Taylor Swift took home the statue for "Fearless."

BEST NEW ARTIST

Two breakout acts, B.o.B and Mumford & Sons, were mentioned on multiple occasions as strong contenders for best new artist, but most believe it'll be a battle between Drake and Justin Bieber, with Drake taking the award.

Emerging stars Nicki Minaj and Bruno Mars are ineligible for nomination this year, as their album release dates fall outside of the eligibility period (Sept. 1, 2009-Sept. 30, 2010); in Mars' case, by one week. Other possible nominees this year include Florence & the Machine, who got a big boost out of their MTV Video Music Awards appearance, and reality TV superstars Susan Boyle and Adam Lambert.

Despite the success of Swift and the Zac Brown Band at last year's ceremony, many country observers say this year's crop of new artists is unlikely to garner many nods. Luke Bryan and Chris Young were both mentioned as long shots.

Grammy voters didn't suffer from a lack of options when it came to nominees; according to Recording Academy president Neil Portnow, the academy received almost 20,000 submissions this year, a new record.

The nominees will be announced Dec. 1 during the third annual "GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live!!: Countdown to Music's Biggest Night" concert. The ceremony will air on CBS on Feb. 13, 2011.

No nods for Minaj, Mars for new artist Grammy

Would-be shoo-ins won't be on ballot because of eligibility requirement

On Dec. 1, The Recording Academy will announce Grammy nominations including Best New Artist, but some of the most obvious names will be missing.

Nicki Minaj and Janelle Monae, both of whom would seem to be shoo-ins, won’t be on the ballot because neither meets the Recording Academy’s eligibility requirement.

Nicki Minaj isn’t allowed because her debut album, “Pink Friday,” came out after the Sept. 30 cut off. “The current eligibility requirements state that the artist must have released, as a featured performing artist, at least one album but not more than three,” according to the rules. The eligibility period for the upcoming Grammys ran Oct. 1, 2009-Sept. 30, 2010. Similarly, Bruno Mars, who also stood a strong chance, released his debut, “Doo-Wops $ Hooligans” too late.

Monae’s case is a little more complicated. She released an EP that was previously nominated, and, according to a Recording Academy representative, anyone previously nominated for a “body of work” such as an EP or full LP, is not eligible in the new artist category. Both she and Minaj are, of course, eligible in a slew of other categories.

The Recording Academy is always reviewing the eligibility requirements and updating them. For example, after Lady Gaga was ruled ineligible last year because “Just Dance” had been nominated in the dance category, the rules were changed this summer to allow an artist whose single had previously been nominated to still be eligible. The rule changes usually occur too late to help the artist whose circumstances prompt the re-examination, but we give credit to the Recording Academy that it has shown willingness to adopt and change with the times.

One of the most famous changes was to allow artists who had been featured on other acts’ records to be eligible for best new artist. That change came about after Whitney Houston was ruled ineligible for the category because she had duetted with Teddy Pendergrass. In other cases, the Academy has made the rules more restrictive. After Shelby Lynne won best new artist after her eighth album release (or something like that), the three-album limit was imposed. As we move more into the digital era and continue in a singles-driven world, we expect to see more changes. Oh, and if you’ve previously won a Grammy in any category, don’t even try to pretend you’re a new artist.

It’s a very strong field this year with no clear winner. Here’s whom we believe will be the leading nominees (with a few extra acts thrown in to hedge our bets). Five artists will get the nod.

Justin Bieber: He and Drake are the leading contenders here. Bieber may suffer because of his teeny bopper status, just as the Jonas Bros. were locked out a few years ago.

B.O.B.: He’s had such a strong year, but voters may believe that much of his popularity is due to his co-stars, such as Hayley Williams, Bruno Mars or Rivers Cuomo more than due to his talents.

Drake: He’s the male Nicki Minaj in that he’s guested on so many people’s records that by the time his solo debut finally came out (and we’re no including the previous mix tapes), we felt like we already knew him.

Ke$ha: It’s a long shot because the Grammys like to pretend they’re too highbrow to recognize someone as low class as Ke$ha, but you can’t deny the impact she has had over the past year after coming out of nowhere.

Mumford & Sons: A cinch for the alternative voters, although they may not have enough mainstream support to push this British new folk outfit all the way too the top.

Florence & The Machine: She wasn’t even a possibility until she blew everyone away with her performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards in Septmeber. And now she’s a prime contender. Adele was the last female Brit to win this award two years ago.

Other possible contenders: The Avett Bros., Susan Boyle, Adam Lambert, Ryan Bingham, Jason DeRulo, Taio Cruz, Neon Trees, Orianthi, Mike Posner and Grace Potter & The Nocturnals.

Selena Gomez, Stevie Wonder To Appear At Grammy Nominations Concert

The pop stars will announce Grammy nominees on Wednesday night's live CBS special.

LL Cool J will be getting a little help from his friends at the "Grammy Nominations Concert Live" on Wednesday night. CBS has announced that Stevie Wonder and Selena Gomez will be on hand to announce the nominees for the big awards show in 2011.

"Selena Gomez & Stevie Wonder headline the presenters for the GRAMMY NOMINATIONS CONCERT LIVE! hosted by LL COOL J on Dec. 1 at 10PM on CBS," the network tweeted on Monday.

The event also will feature performances by a variety of big-name acts, including Justin Bieber, B.o.B, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry and Miranda Lambert, during the one-hour show that will go down at Club Nokia in Los Angeles. The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards themselves will air live on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 13.

2010 was a Lack-Luster year if you ask me...

The ONLY person I'm interested in seeing Nominated is Kem...Kem's Beautiful CD "Intimacy" should garner nominations across the board but it probably will not...

Kem's Heartfelt Beautiful Ballad "Why would you stay" should get a nod for "Song of the Year"...I LOVE that song..The first time I heard it in my car I had to turn it up...Pop-radio didnt give it the time of day which is sad...

Kem's R&B hit song of 2010 is why GRAMMYS are given...

SexyKevTauren79,

Grrrl you are just too tragic. Still beating that dead horse. Let her rest in peace.

Both Minaj & Mars should have released their debut albums before the deadline if they wanted consideration.

But just like Whitney, Minaj is not worthy of Grammy nominations for releasing such lackluster product.

Janelle Monae might be the only one robbed.

Did Whitney loose the year that Sade won?

Sade just had a #1 album and Top 10 hit and will most likely garner a couple of nominations tonight if there's any justice. She also has an upcoming WORLD tour next year that will surely not be the disaster Whitney's was.
Whitney had mercy sales, not one hit single and NOT one Grammy nomination even after they moved up her release date just to qualify. Looks like no matter how much uncle Clive threatended or paid people off nothing happened.

All in all I'm pretty happy with the nominees

Love seeing Robyn, La Roux, The Band Perry, Lady A, Mumford & Sons and Ray LaMontagne getting recognized!

I'm a bit shocked about Katy Perry's Album of the Year nomination...but I guess it makes sense having 3 #1 singles on it

same here but Katy Perry being nominated for anything is laughable. too many categories to go thru and analyze. tomorrow's another day.

These nominations suck. At least Nicki didn't get anything...but Katy Perry gets a Best Female Vocal performance nod but Leona doesn't?! How dare they!

Why would Leona Lewis get a nomination? did she even have anything out this year?

Nope. His debut album was released after the end of the eligibility period which is one of their new rules for New Artist nominees.
