Official 82nd Annual Academy Awards{Oscars} Thread

Re: Official 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

^^ Mirren is of course always excellent in anything she does, but I don't think she has a chance of winning this time. Mulligan just got an unexpected boost with her BAFTA win (they have a decent track record of matching Oscar wins in this category, and I think about 500 or so of their voters overlap with the Academy) so she may be a dark horse after all, and I think she'd be a decent winner.

Julie and Julia isn't Streep's best performance, but lord knows she's far more deserving than Bullock (who would easily go down as the worst Best Actress winner in my estimation, and yes, I've seen them all). Streep is often at the podium for Globes and SAG so I think a lot of people think she's won a lot already, but she actually hasn't won an Oscar in two decades. And only one of the two Oscars she's won was for Lead Actress. When you think about it, it's kind of inconceivable that our Greatest Living Actress has one Lead Actress Oscar while Hillary Swank has two.

Anyway, I'll take Streep or Mulligan or Mirren or Sidibe or ANYONE over Bullock. :D

Re: Official 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

this is an interesting thread over in the Hot Topics.

Re: Official 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

Hilary Swank having 2 Best Actress Oscars and Streep only having one used to really bother me; but then i realized that it does not mean that Swank is better or more respected, all it means is that the roles she won for were made for her and she was born to play to them as such she was able to nail it. She is smart, she chooses her roles wisely; but the academy is over her now or else they would have nominated her for Amelia.

________________

Well its official it seems Bullock has it in the bag. Even reputable insiders are predicting her win.

I just read 8 "who will win/should win" articles and all of them said Bullock will win; but the interesting thing is that all of them say she doesn't deserve it based on the performance and list other factors for her win.

Five of the articles say Streep should win, while two said Mulligan should win and one said anybody but Bullock should win so as to maintain the dignity of the award.

____________

I took the liberty of writing part of Bullocks acceptance speech,

"Wow you guys actually gave it to me? wait a minute, am i being punked? Ashton where are you? This is so unreal. Meryl i am sorry but if they can give this to me that means they just don't want you to win again, its like anybody but Meryl and by anybody i mean anybody but you. I never really considered myself a serious actress even though winning an Oscar was a dream of mine every since i as a little girl and saw ________ win for _____________. I was like one day that is going to me. I do not want to seem ungrateful because i really appreciate this honor academy; but lets get real, we all know that i am not winning because i gave the best performance of the year. I would like to thank Leigh-Anne Tuohy for ___________ and also ___________, but most importantly___________!

Re: Official 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

Really don't care what wins Best Picture as long as it's not Avatar!

Re: Official 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

who's watching tonight?

home, party, club, bar?

Re: Official 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

Sandra Bullock is one of my favorite human beings. Seriously.

Re: Official 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

So far, this is really falling flat. O.K......Ben Stiller just came on,,,and is quite funny. Though he looks a bit embarrassed. lol.

Re: Official 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

I love how Monique paid tribute to Hattie McDaniel for paving the way.

I don't think there have been any big surprises. Nothing has swept everything. Avatar and Hurt Locker both have a few.
I'm so glad they're doing the personal things again for best actor/actress. I think those are a really nice touch.

Re: Official 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

Monique was full of crap talking about performance over politics when she knows damn well that Tyler Perry but especially Oprah did all the campaigning for her.

And then she thanks BET but not not her director and her cast? Saying "My Precious Family" just does not cut it.

Every other awards show she called them out by name and said something about them but at the biggest night of the year she plugs BET but not the people that helped her mold the performance.

Anything to get her boring ass talk show renewed.

No wonder Samuel L Jackson rolled his eyes after her speech,

That was a pretty satisfying, although predictable Oscars. I'm even OK with Sandra Bullock getting the Julia Roberts vote because her speech was pretty awesome. However, what's up with the crazy purple lady pulling a Kanye on stage?

And I hate that these teeny boppers that are invited to present (Taylor Lautner, Zack Efron, Miley Cyrus). I'm especially annoyed with Lautner. He's had one substantial and successful role in a bad movie and all of a sudden he's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Somebody's bitter. Samuel Jackson was full of shit for making that face. Who Madd? I wasn't shocked when she talked about performance over politics because lets be real, that what many discuss during Oscar season. How many thought that Avatar was going to sweep the Oscars. She been praising the cast and crew behind Precious at every ceremony so cut her some slack :gogirl:

I liked that also, but I thought she would thank Lee Daniels like she did @ the Golden globes. why BET?

She was right about performance over politics.
Sandra Bullock won because she was due etc etc. She gave an excellent performance but not to earn an Oscar for BestActress? Just my opinion.

It was predictable but I've seen worse. Like last year. At least they showed clips from the performances this year.

They had, what, three teens? Can't you give a dog a bone?

I guess I don't mind the teen thing too much, it's just that usually they're so trendy and in 2 or 3 years we may not even remember them. So far none of them really has had more than one claim-to-fame. I think they're going to have to do more than flavor of the month action movies or cheesy teen movies if they want to stick around.

Re: Official 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

Well, there were more than 3 "teens" presenting. I actually like Amanda Seyfried and at least Kristen Stewart was in good movies before (and arguably after) Twilight. OK, I'll throw Efron a bone since he's at least making an attempt at mature roles. I'll even give a pass to Miley since she's appeared at these award shows before and I've gotten used to seeing her at places she doesn't belong.

But Taylor....I'm assuming his role in the upcoming Stretch Armstrong movie isn't going to garner any Oscar buzz. Same goes for his tween-Bourne movie. It just doesn't seem like he has any business at the Oscars, and obviously he's just a ratings ploy. Also, I found it laughable that a clip from New Moon was included in the Horror montage of the show. There's nothing intentionally scary about New Moon!

Re: Official 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nomination Thread

Amanda Seyfried is 24, that's not a teen by any means.

Anyways this was the first Oscars I've watched in full, even more boring than the Grammy's.

I mean I think most of them are just a ratings ploy, and probably more-so the boys than the girls.
Miley has that new drama coming out, we'll see how that pans out.
As awkward as I think she is, IMO K-Stew has the best chance of doing anything serious, maybe just because she seems so anti-teen.
