After 20 years, travelling to many countries and being used in my work, my Nikon, with the very expensive lenses fell from the car last week and both camera and lens have been declared irreparable.

I see that a replacement Nikon now runs up to about $4000 with the same lenses.

I think my days of taking pics for anything other than archival purposes is now done...to be honest, I was using the camera as a point and click 99% of the time and not even bothering to take it to family or similar occasions anymore. Phones capture the moment just as well.

But I do need a camera other than than the phone (I think). For whatever reason, my laptop and phone don't seem to want to share pics via Bluetooth and sometimes I need more from a camera.

Any recommendations?

My great-great uncle was one of the earliest studio photographers in Ontario and I want to do him okay, if not proud.

If it was 20 years old I assume it was a DSLR and big and bulky. Nikon make excellent mirrorless cameras these days (but yes, they're expensive). If you're shopping for cameras these days you'll find mirrorless cameras are taking over. Advantages: what you see in the viewfinder is what you get. Smaller, lighter. Disadvantages: expensive, can be complicated, more power hungry - you'd go out for a day with at least two batteries.

If you're looking around, smaller options include Olympus / OM System (the OM1 is excellent) which uses a smaller sensor so everything is smaller, including the lenses. Great for travel. Also Fujifilm (the XT4 is excellent) which is a mid size between OM1 and "full frame". An excellent small kit would be the OM1 or OM5, with 12-40 f2.8 pro lens (24-80 equivalent on that sensor size). Check out some options at a camera store.

When I scrolled past this thread, I at first read it as "Oh No, Nixon Dead." I had to go back to make sure of what I read because as I recall, Nixon has been gone for quite a while, and I don't recall anybody being particularly upset over his demise.

Wow, the loss of an old camera is like losing a friend, and the cost of new cameras can bring you to tears.

My Nikon was stolen in Peru. Damn!
Now I use a Canon & my phone camera.
