I agree, I could have been more blunt in the end.

Was taking into consideration his comfort level and was receptive to the fact he was expecting to keep it very low key, casual and discreet.

I'm pretty sure he was not expecting to have the deep conversation we had about his sexuality. My impression was he wanted it to be subtle and just let it happen naturally without any talk or pretense. Little update:
