I'm buying my dad a kindle which means I need to get my mother something separate because she'll just stare at it. She likes unique stuff... last year I got her a big box made in Tuva out of cloves. She also loves crazy stuff like Japanese Paper and hand made things from Java. But I'm at a bit of a loss where to even start.

I mean... I'm giving an advance copy of my coffee table book to Carlo but I dont' think my mother wants to see men fucking in motorcycle gear and motor oil.

Past that.. no, not really.

I once gave her a big pack of porn that i'd worked on and she did like it but it's not really a Christmas gift for a 70 year-old woman from Atlantic Canada.
 
Maybe "stuff" isn't the right approach...

Why not set up both mom AND dad with round trip airfare to San Fran or L.A. and get them a cushy hotel for a few nights ?

They'd never forget it, and assuming that they are both still healthy enough to travel you should do it now before times change....

I know it's a royal pain in the ass, but I flew my dad up to Boston for a few days during his final "good years" and I'm eternally happy that I did...

If not that, how about a cruise ?

They are not going to be around forever, you know....

Oh they've both got a good 30 years left in them. I brought them out to visit last summer for a couple of weeks and they did like it a lot but my mother won't fly so they had to take the train. Which means an extra 10 days for travel and my father is still a conductor so he can't really go away long during the season.

That said... maybe New York city for a weekend... that might be fun.

Well I mean.. I can't paint or draw... just take pictures and video. And the pictures I take... probably not what she'd want, I tend to take rather extreme stuff.

OK, so something I do no matter where I go is I wake up REALLY early, set my camera on a tripod and shoot video of sunrises. I've got HOURS of video of the sun rising and setting over oceans, mountains, deserts... I can master a whole DVD box set of my "Environmental" movies. I bet she'd love those.

Jasun, have you taken any digital still photos that she'd like? You can get them made into a calendar at snapfish.com. It'd be a month-by-month expression of you for her.

Like I said... the kinds of pictures that I take aren't really her thing.

you guys here all know my porn work which is my day job but my personal work is very dark, edgy still photography which tends to be about gear and homoeroticism.. not really what she'd want on her wall.

Although I think it might be fun to do something like that. Maybe I can try to do some "mom friendly" work for next year.

I like the DVD of Sunrises for this year. Or the NYC trip could be cool; I actually thought about that one but then you thought about it so

Very good idea; if you do one dark edgy and gear and erotic; I would think about buying two copies :D I've seen some of your stuff you shared in the past and would bet the farm it would be, urm, SOMETHING.

I did that a few years ago and she did like it.

in the end, I bought a really nice hand-blown glass vase from Brazil from the National Geographic website and I'll send the sunrise DVDs too.
