Are you guys really snowed in?

I heard today they've even shut down the airports.

What's going on out there?

Just saw on news, about 2 feet of snow! Airport closed yesterday and today!

My sister and brother-in-law were spending their annivesary in Estes Park, Colorado.

They were supposed to have been back in Texas on Tuesday.

They finally made it to Denver today.

With any luck they'll be back home to spend Christmas with us Christmas Eve night.

I was thinking about the people who are trying to get either in or out to visit family and friends for the holiday. That's gotta suck, not knowing if you're going to be able to keep your travel plans or not.

And expensive too.

That are sleep with thousands of strangers at the Denver Airport hoping that you can catch the next available flight to wherever, in hopes that you can rent a car and just drive home!

It's bad!

It's really strange around here. Everything an hour away from Liberal is closed... the highways and most of the cities. KS has shut down US 70 West beginning in Salina. US 83 North of Garden City is closed. All highways heading to Colorado are shut down with the blocking gates in place. Parts of Oklahoma are the same way.

And here Liberal is with no snow or ice...

Well I hope everybody is doing their best to stay safe. I know I definitely wouldn't want to be out in that mess.

I have about 2 feet of snow in my yard in Denver, took about an hour to dig my car out. Haven't driven yet since not much was open any way, but tomorrow I'm looking forward to getting out of the house. I was lucky to be home and not stranded somewhere, just sitting inside lovin' all the snow.

My back and shoulders ache from shovelling my driveway. There's around 2 to 3 feet of snow (but it seems more due to wind blowing it every which way). I couldn't even get out of the driveway today. Yesterday it was pretty bad (strong winds, very difficult to drive) but today wasn't too bad.

The snowplows haven't gotten to the side roads so that sucks for many of us living in CO. I feel bad for those stranded in the airport and trying to leave/come in to Denver.

This snowstorm isn't nearly as bad as March 2003, now that was HELL! The snow was so heavy and so tall when that happened. The snow this time around was light and powdery, just very strong winds making for really bad driving and flying conditions.

I heard this on the morning news and was wondering how Hotdog1846 was doing. Hope everyone from there is ok and coping. That is alot of snow to get at one time.

Awww ... (*8*) Thanks for thinking of me! You've made my day.

I'm safe and sound ... I left work midday yesterday and took almost 50 minutes to travel the distance that is ordinarily about 20 minutes. Traction wasn't the trouble (I have a 4WD Grand Cherokee) so much as too many cars were on the road for the conditions, and many, once stopped at stoplights, couldn't get started again in the deep snow and started sliding all around. I took a back way for the last half of my drive through untracked side streets, and I had to give the Jeep a lot of throttle -- it has a V8, for heaven's sake -- to get through the deep snow.

I stayed home today and worked from home. Didn't miss a beat as far as work goes. Ain't technology grand?

On the scale of blizzards on the Colorado Front Range, I'd call this one "medium" ... the Blizzard of '82 in Denver, and the Blizzard of '97 in Colorado Springs were more intense. But it's still enough to shut things down.

Major highways are open again, and most arterials in the city are now open and passable although snowpacked. Side streets will take days to clear, but if someone has broken through with a 4WD, it's somewhat doable. The airport will take forever to re-open just because, with such long and wide runways and so much taxiway, they have thousands of acres of pavement to clear before the planes can move, and the wind (now calm) kept blowing the snow back onto the tarmac.

I'd be curious if any JUBbers got stranded at DIA. Hope you're all warm and snug!

We just had a dump of 2 feet of snow in the Copper River Basin area of Alaska and didn't miss much of a beat. Winds reached 40 MPH sustained with gusts to 60 MPH. A few highways were closed for a few hours to clear avalanches, but Anchorage, the valley, the basin, etc. are all functioning and people are traveling.

The city, county, state did not plan well and did not listen to forecasts. This should be changed by the people who live there. Piss poor planning makes for piss poor results. There should be no excuse for the hired government planners.

Anchorage international airport did not close down, hasn't closed down in years. UPS and other freight companies use the airport as one of the nation's largest hubs for distribution and is 4th place worldwide for handling freight.

I can't believe that over 4,000 people are stranded there! At least thats what they said on the news...

I love snow, but over 2 feet might be pushing it.

*sigh* I miss Denver...I need to get back soon! Any JUBers living there, tell the Rockies I said hello!

I've spent part of a winter in Denver - but luckily it wasn't THAT bad. I still have friends there, so I may give them a ring and see how they are going.

I also saw today that London Airport (Heathrow) was in chaos, with many people stuck there because of fog that just wouldn't lift.

It sounds like a lot of people are having a frustrating lead in to Christmas (oh - how I love our weather!) :D

I got an e-mail from a friend in Denver yesterday, it was a picture of a five foot snow drift next to her house. It is taller than her

Here's hoping ALL you guys in the Denver area are well-prepared for the snow-in that's happening to you guys right now.

I know people wish for a White Holiday; but dontcha think this is pushing the enevelope a little??? lol

Hang in there and stay well!(*8*) (*8*)

Ahhh, the "Mile High" city, I have very fond memories of Denver BUT there is no way I would go there in the winter, can't stand snow. Hope you all are doing ok.

A friend that lives in Littleton sent some pics. They live on the second floor of an apartment complex. The drifts are beautiful to look at, but created some interesting problems for them. The drifts covered the stairs at the complex! She had pictures showing management digging everyone out.
