OMG!

Euell Gibbons became a 70's icon as a leader of the "back to nature" food movement, thanks to the Post Grape Nuts ad campaign beginning in 1973. Euell Gibbons was an instant joke as many of my friends would repeat, "ever eat a pine tree?". Johnny Carson made Euell Gibbons a feature of his opening monologues on The Tonight Show.

In 1975, Euell Gibbons thrilled and delighted as Johnny's guest on the Tonight Show talking about how he survived two weeks on a deserted island just living off the land. It became the basis for his book, "The Beachcomber's Handbook", eating nothing but natural foods. Johnny Carson was wowed by Gibbon's wit, knowledge and humor.

Another Johnny Carson joke that turned into gold was the Tonight Show appearance of Slim Whitman.

Slim came from a long tradition of yodeling cowboys, an American standard that peaked in the 40's and 50's. Slim could yodel with the best of them and kept the singing style alive with his recordings and live appearances. Listen carefully as Slim sings. His style is subtle but effective. This type of singing is not easy to copy and both Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon were impressed by his talent, singing live on a TV show instead of lip-syncing to a record.
