Olympics 2008

Did I just have a really crappy pre-recorded satellite feed last night, or did the team gymnastics event focus almost solely on Japan and China?

According to the score sheet which popped up every now and again, there were German and French teams competing against the usual suspects - Russia, the Yanks, Romania - but all I got to see over the first three rotations was the new and former champions.

I did catch a snippet of a news update on another channel which showed a Russian and an American doing some awesome tricks on the pommel horse, but the broadcast I was watching ignored all the other teams entirely.

With something as varied as the Olympic Games - so many disciplines - I suppose an actual medal talley is probably the only way to distinguish people.

Either way, nobody can doubt that Phelps is a fantastic athlete. I don't think dubbing him one of the all time greats would be premature at all.

I thought the Opening Ceremony was MIND-BLOWING! I've enjoyed the swimming, diving and gymnastics. GREAT stuff so far.

Actually, I think you'll find you mean Russian hotness Alexei Nemov, gymnast du jour at Atlanta in '96 with a total medal count of 4 golds, 2 silver and 6 bronze in '96 and in Sydney.

I'll forgive you this once, but don't let it happen again! :D

Wasn't he a hottie? Wonder whatever happened to him.

Dara Torres with the Silver. Good job by the 41 year old.

Lolo Jones' stumble on the 9th hurdle was painful! I even spoiled myself and read it in the news in advance, and it still was hard to watch! Hopefully she'll be back in London.

hehe - glad you are feeling so superior greaves.;)

Just goes to show what the Poms can do when they finally get some funding - and actually megabucks compared to Australia.

Good on them - and yes, there is quite a bit of talk about how the funding for Australian Sport needs to get greater emphasis again. I can't vouch for whether it is true, but one report quoted that the UK is spending more on its Paralympic Swim team than Australia has on its Olympic Swim team.

I admit I had a good chuckle at the 'tongue in cheek' report quoted from the SMH in the 2nd of your links - good Aussie humour.:)

I would also remind everyone of the blindingly obvious - for a nation of little over 20million people, Australia has boxed well above its weight for a very long time. In all honesty, a nation with a population the size of the UK should be outmedalling Australia by a very long way.

IIRC, I posted something after the last Olympics (I believe we finished third on the medal table?) and I think the rest of the top 10 countries had a population base at least twice as big as us.

Anyway - all that aside, congrats to the UK on a very much improved performance - good to see at long last!

Nice post Tribi. ..|

The "GB has a population of circa 60 million, whilst Australia has a population of circa 20 million" point is being made by many Aussies responding to GB's success at the Olympics. But:

The 6th largest country in the world is Australia.

The 78th largest country in the world is the UK.

http://www.mongabay.com/igapo/world_statistics_by_area.htm

Why does such a large country such as Australia have such a small population?

And why does New Zealand -74th in the table- have a population of less than 4 million?

Come on greaves - the landmass of the country has very little to do with medal outcomes and sporting achievement, whereas the emphasis on sport within a culture & funding given are clearly important. A larger population base also gives you more potential when combined with the above.

Look at the medal tally for the Chinese, now that the society is becoming more prosperous and they are concentrating more effort in performing well in the sporting arena. With a population base like theirs - and an economy that is booming - I doubt they will be off the top of the medal table any time soon...

Another interesting statistic from today's Olympic medal table is the position of South Africa.

67th on the list with just one medal.

SA is the 24th largest country in the world and has a population of circa 47 million.

It is also well known as a sporting nation. So why such a pathetic Olympic showing?

And Tribi: you didn't address the - admittedly political, rather than sporting - question:

Why is Australia so under-populated?

Congratulations to both Paddy barnes and Darren John Sutherland both of whom represented Ireland in the Boxing and both defeted today in their semi final fights but we took Bronze so I'm not worried. And good luck to Ken egan in his semi final today at 2pm Irish time.

Well - I'm not South African, so I can't claim to be an expert - but - two of the major sports in S.Africa (and ones at which they are at the forefront on the international stage) are Cricket and Rugby. Funnily enough...they don't seem to be Olympic sports...

As for "why is Australia so under-populated?" - Well you could ask the same question about Greenland. It's all about 'usable' land.

You'll find that the vast majority of the Australian population live on the coast - that's because the interior is arid - desert - inhospitable...
