Yah the compliment has more of a resonance if the guy is hot himself but I don't turn down compliments from people I don't find attractive either .

I'm usually complimented on "not looking my age" - and I NEVER get tired of hearing it !!

on the other hand - if you walk up to me and say - hey - you've put on a few pounds haven't you? I'll tell you where to go !!

at the end of the day - it's the sincerity of the compliment that's important -- don't say something you don't mean just because you think the other person will like you more for saying it - you gotta mean it ..

Ok, an honest answer here. I was never 'out' so all the compliments I used to get (haha, used to is the key word here) were from girls or woman... and that always was very embarrassing cause I knew they were coming on to me... I hated it and learned very early on how to deflect them so as to not lead them to believe I was interested in dating them.

When I was in the period of hookuping up with guys, well it was nice to have the guy you were with say you were handsome, cute, whatever...

I spent the first 22 years of my life being very skinny and not too attracive, luckily I sort of grew in to my body.

I hate being complimented on my looks... (aside from the one night guy that I was making love to)... I always felt self concious when people paid me that compliment... the proper thing would have been to just say thank you.

I always changed the subject, still do (though those compliments are becoming more rare as time moves on)..
Didn't matter to me if the girl was beautiful or the guy was handsome... I just don't like to hear stuff like that.

I learned long ago that the best way to deflect a compliment about my looks is to turn the convo back the person making the comment.

Bottom line is I don't like compliments about myself... much rather give them to others... and I don't give false ones either... I've never done that and never will..

When people compliment me on my looks, I can only assume that they're either lying or they need eyeglasses... so they don't mean anything either way.

I like compliments, don't get me wrong, but compliments on my looks, over which I have almost no control, don't really mean anything to me. Compliments on something I do control, a performance or an outfit, or even just my choice in accessories, make me feel all warm and gooey.

However, to return to the original question, I'm more likely to assume that a hot guy is just being charming when he compliments me, and that the homelier chap is more likely to be sincere. The beauty knows that people are watching, and if he's being charming to old toads he looks better; the fellow toad is more likely to have more personal reasons.

Compliment means so much more if it's from someone I'm attracted to yes, and I'm pretty sure that's the case with everyone.

If I get a big compliment from someone who I am just friends with or not interested in, I usually feel a little awkward or unsure how to respond.

There is a lot to be said about a person in how they give/receive compliments. As a Southerner, I try to be as gracious and appreciative as possible and try to find something about them to compliment as well. The absolute worst response you could give when you receive a compliment is "I know" or "Tell me something I don't know...". That completely invalidates any compliment you were just given and you should be hit in the head with a brick. Then go see a counselor for your self-esteem issues you're compensating for. But that's just me...

I get compliments from time to time, especially on something I'm wearing. I try to make it known that I appreciate the compliment and then deflect it off of me by saying something like "Thanks I appreciate it - I'm glad I got my sense of style from my mom or else I'd be wearing camoflauge right now..." Now, that may seem corny and I don't always say stuff like that but a simple "Thanks, I appreciate it" will never do you wrong.

I think it means more when someone who I'm not really attracted to "Guys around my age" compliment me. Well when I mean means more I mean surprises me more and flatters me more.

If an older guy, daddy or bear or something compliments me I think, "OMG I'M SO WORTH OF HIM. HE'S SO HAWT". But if someone who I am not really interested in compliments him I think, "Well wow someone who I am not really attracted to thinks I look good. Maybe I'm not so bad."

But that's just me.

I get complimented from time to time on my looks and never quite know how to take them. Of course I'm happy, but simply believe most folks are being polite. That said, I'm a bit happier if a hot person says I'm attractive...sort of!
