Crossing the icy Delaware River the night before, General George Washington led a surprise attack on Hessian troops - fighting for the British during the American Revolution - encamped in the town of Trenton, New Jersey on the morning of December 26, 1776.
Washington’s army in 1776 was suffering from low morale, having endured several defeats and constant supply issues. With enlistments down and his men losing faith in the cause, Washington hoped a victory would reenergize the army and the Revolution.
Led by Washington himself, the Americans caught the Hessians by surprise and were able to capture Trenton without any combat deaths. Two men died in route due to frost bite conditions. Years later, Emanuel Leutze’s painting, “Washington Crossing the Delaware” dramatically memorialized the stunning American victory at the Battle of Trenton. Though an important moment in the American Revolution, it stands as just one critical achievement in the incredible life of George Washington.
