On why the Vatican should be sold

Sounds like a good reason for keeping it. Enchanted places are important to the human spirit.

If it's enchanted, shouldn't it have some faeries?

God.

What a stupid thread.

I suspect that most of the morons who have responded have never been to the Vatican or understand what happens there.

To begin with it is a nation state.

The treasures of the Vatican are not nearly as exceptional or rich as most idiots who post to threads like believe. There is far more of greater value on the walls of the Louvre or the National Gallery.

It fucking slays me when people think that selling a few paintings and some relatively worthless land will eliminate starvation. Or is there a market for priceless treasures like the ceiling of the Vatican?

As if.

Jesus wept.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

The fact that the Vatican is a nation state is one of the problems. Christ was not about creating nation states.

Your position that it's OK for the Vatican to retain its wealth, because it owns less than others, is laughable. The issue is whether the Popes, as the successors to St Peter, should have accumulated any significant worldly riches beyond some basic administrative needs. Hard to think that Christ would think it's OK to live in a palace and not something he ever chose to do.

There seems no reason why the Vatican treasures shouldn't be bequeathed to a charitable organization and maintained separate from the Church's princes and hierarchy. And there seems no reason why the Church's management could not be run in a less ostentatious and more functional way that's more consistent with Christ's own teachings. That's the point.

Oh, and yes, I've been to the Vatican and it's the ultimate celebration of earthy vanities. The Scientology Center a few centuries on.

Firstly the idea of selling the vatican is ludicrous for one thing because who do you think would buy it and what purpose could it be adapted to? Also the need for an alternative "corporate headquarters" for the church would require financing from any such sale, as one of the other posters said.

secondly just how much money do you think would be needed to solve poverty and hunger? The size of the problem is collosal. Be clear selling the vatican and it's art will be just a drop in the ocean. The real answer is to get to the root causes and solve them.

I haven't been to the vatican but I have to many catholic treasures, such as in Malta, and what the people who say these things fail to realise is that pious christians paid for and worked on the building of these monuments often because their love of their God and religion made them want to celebrate it by making it inspirational. These kind of buildings inspire the spiritual and the soul, in their form, space, proportion, and yes material (marble) in a way modern functional buildings don't and never will.

I'm never in favor of purposely increasing entropy.
Not even for the lulz?

Who would buy the Vatican?
*raises his hand*

I would invite all the world's gays and lesbians and we would democratically elect the Drag Queen and King of our new Magical Kingdom. Our palace guards would be dressed in short shorts and know kung fu.

Sell the vatican?? I think that would destroy everything the catholic church stands for. Money, power, worldly possessions and a big balcony.
