Attention One of our neighbors painted the foundation of his house teal blue!

The house is light beige siding,with a lovely hunter green door and brass accents.

But the foundation was painted a bright teal blue...

Over here, foundations are underground as well, whether or not there is a basement. The foundations are built upon 'footings' and the house is built upon the foundations. If there is a basement, the foundation above the ground level allows for windows and waterproofing. Very few homes sit at ground level.

I'm pretty sure (hopeful) that she is as horrified as are all of us.

However, it does make for giving good directions.

Yes...I was incorrect in my post. The foundation walls that form a basement would be a better explanation.

red brick is not a good look----my neighbor spent a fortune renovating the inside of his red brick 1965 ranch ----and he had to do something about the outside so he painted it off white---looks 100% better.

I would have painted the foundation too, because I don't like the look of bare concrete....but I would have either matched the siding or the brick color.

Its a very stupid trend to "modernize" that mid century brick ranch around where I live. Example:

Now how is this going to look 5, 10, 15 years from now when painted brick becomes passe and out of fashion???? You can't unpaint brick, if you do this, you are committed to it for the life of the house.

I've also noticed that these painted brick houses are usually flip houses here in Nashville. If you aren't careful, flip houses can be way overpriced and you could be stuck in some negative equity when this real estate market crashes in the next few years.

I come from a place with few brick houses. Don't you find brick just a little monotonous?

Outside of that blue door...I think both of those homes look better . I love brick, and I'm generally against painting it white, but I don't think darkening it is inherently a bad thing. A lot of people are giving their homes similar treatments here in Atlanta.

They mean that you don't perceive the colour green in the same way.

Both of these houses were vastly improved, particularly the first one, not the least because in both examples the non-functional shutters were removed from the ganged windows. The first house is particularly well-done--it now has a harmony that it previously lacked when the individual elements--doors and windows, shutters, wall and trim--were fighting each other for attention. Most importantly, the well-proportioned gabled porch is now legible and assumes a prominence it never had while the brick was dark.

There is a long and estimable tradition of painted brick; I wouldn't worry about it going out of fashion. Regarding the first house, go to Pinterest or Google Images and enter "white-painted brick houses" and you'll find hundreds of handsome examples.

To me painting brick is a breath of fresh air. I watch Flip or Flop and they paint brick as well as replace faulty plumbing and wiring.

Painting brick is optional. Replacing faulty wiring is mandatory. They can get away with patching a leaky pipe or a cracked foundation or a leak in the roof, but they must replace faulty wiring, and it must be inspected before the drywall goes up. This applies to Canada and the US. I don't know about the laws in other countries.

The examples of homes shown here takes extremely dated looking homes and brings them up to date in looks and style.
They are a huge improvement and have real curb appeal. Landscaping goes a long way in doing that, too.
The same goes for the interior of homes. What is more boring that every wall in a home being off white? Add color to rooms and you have changed everything about the house. Of course, if your color choice lean toward pinks or polka dots, you might want
to get professional help....I mean as in a decorator, but the other kind of help might be in order, too.

Hideous.

The bottom house was changed enough with the additional features such as the new front door, porch roof/posts, the new shutters, trimmings around/over the garage door, flower boxes, and the new roofing. Getting rid of the outdated and cheap looking iron features was a good idea, but painting the bricks was foolish.

I'm reminded of the homes of lazy/ignorant people who paint over interior hardwood trim and cabinetry.

Thats exactly what it reminds us of,is an aquarium in some kind of polynesian tiki bar restaurant.
