Sorry, I've had no experience whatsoever with the on-line photo-editors. You will get a few dozen possibilities if you google it.

But does it really have to be on-line? Or do you just want something free? It takes a lot of adjusting to learn the interface, but I have come to love GIMP. It is just as powerful as Photoshop. And it is free and open-source.

^That depends. For me, GIMP is much easier, because I learned on GIMP and have NEVER used Photoshop.

But I suspect that if you know Photoshop, relearning everything for GIMP would drive you crazy!

If you're using Windows, I'd suggest the free Paint.Net program. Wiki/pdn site There is also a forum where you can other people's art, photo edits, advice, and faq about techniques used as well as downloadable plugins created by its fans. These are modules that are placed into one of the paint.net subfolders. On start up, it looks through them and then a list of the plugin tools appears via one of the drop down menu options.

If you're going to edit out the background, the best thing to do is use layers. You can save your work in its own proprietary .pdn format to edit later, or save in a range of formats like gif, jpg, png etc.

< my avatar was done in pdn, and the siggy below too, although I animated it later using something else...
