Online vocabulary and slang

In fact for me that is an assumption. You are assuming that we, the readers in general, will understand the meanings behind the atrocious English to which we are submitted on Internet. In my case that is not always true.

I am not asking for there to be laws about how people write, they do what they want and if they fail in communicating to me their thoughts well then it is not that serious.

I do wonder sometimes if people are actually trying to communicate or if their only concern is writing what they want to say in the heat of the moment and not caring less if it is understood.

Mobile telephone texting and Internet shorthand combined with an apparent sense of immediacy, has transformed the writing skills of many people, to where so many people write as if they are speaking.

I am very patient with Internet shorthand, in the knowledge that I easily learn the shorthand, and consequently communication becomes that much easier.

^ I DO write as a speak. Then again, I'm the OLDer generation. *said sodden with sarcasam*

Har! Har! Har!

Well, as I've said before, I'm not overly concerned about posting styles per se, as long as I can, more or less, ferret out the gist of meaning I'm pretty much okay.

I can chime with that.

As long as it doesn't take a toll on you. HA!

Hmmmm... isn't "...gist of meaning..." a tad redundant?

Oh well, it's all part of my inimitable posting style. :D

I cannot act as an adjudicator on writing styles.

I take the view that if I have understood the meaning of the message, then it is not for me to sit in judgement on the poor grammar, or inadequate spelling.

I enjoy the variety that different generations, tribes, social groups etc. introduce into my life. I grow in appreciation that life is a jig saw, which in the final analysis creates the finished puzzle. But it takes all shapes, sizes and colours to arrive at the destination.

For the record, I wasn't referring to JUB in particular. Some of you all seem so defensive.
...

I understand that you have had some problems with other Internet users who assume you are pretentious because of the way you type.

I'm sure you realize that assumptions based upon online typing are often far from accurate.

However, your complaint could be seen as loitering around the same pigeonhole.

Most of us are just here (online) to have fun. We may type differently depending upon the subject or forum.

If you're unable to do the same, best wishes anyway.

Then maybe you're not in the target audience the person is aiming at?

Communication works both ways. I speak (or write) to you, and you do or do not understand what I'm saying. If you don't, I've failed.

Presumably when 2 teenagers or 20-somethings talk in text-speak, they understand each other. If they want to communicate with an adult, they have to use a different language. But neither language is a priori "superior" to the other...

KEWL! (typed by a man in his forties who took college keyboarding for accounting- a 4 credit per semester/ two semester course- and made an 'A' in both semesters, get over it)

I was actually speaking of it being used in a dating context--emails I have received, and in profiles of guys who say they want to meet me---you can use it, or any other expression you want. It lets me know I just would not be interested in dating that guy.

It was more of an observation than a complaint but implying that I'm here for different reasons than everyone else here is not only irrelevant but unfair.

Anything that relates to your original post content is relevant.

Starting a thread with "I've noticed a problem" and, "seem to have a limited vocabulary" does not sound to me like someone who is going to participate in slang/fun.

I said most are here to have fun, not everyone.

See, we're not having fun right now. :rotflmao:
