I don't use dating sites, but my pics here are probably 4 years old. I stay in shape, but am almost never that ripped. I think each of us wants to put our best image out. If you're in doubt, just ask. It's a fair question and deserves an honest answer. My advice is completely inexperienced.

If they haven't said anything intriguing in four or five exchanges, feel free to end it. "I'm not really feeling anything with you - sorry about that." Then block if necessary.
You can jump straight to the "I'm not feeling anything with you - sorry about that", and blocking.
It really shouldn't take hours unless you enjoy it.
