I saw a Seagate brand of 4TB for $119 at walmart, is that good for porn storage? Like, quality, speed, safe for files? Like not damage them in any way?

And would it be compatible to play on a ps3 or ps4 to watch on big screen?

I have a WD 1TB already filled and well, i need more space. Any other suggestions?

In general, people who buy drives a lot for when they build their own systems or swap out those drives for more capacity, or buy external drives for more storage, tend to be either distinctly Seagate or Western Digital brand fans and very loyal buyers to that brand. I'm a Western Digital guy myself and never had a WD problem. You can find a lot of stuff online comparing the brands in general (like this). I know some people were burnt by Seagate's firmware lock-up problem, but realistically that was years ago and models and manufacturing techniques have changed.

Well, why not? 8-) I can't think of a better use for storage than porn! Fill those gigs/teras...

Like, quality, speed, safe for files?

Portables (externals) are often broken up into smaller ones powered entirely by the USB port that size-wise fit more neatly in a hand, vs. typically taller and heavier ones that have an AC power cable in addition to the USB. "Speed" is usually determined by the speed of the drive itself (5400 RPM's as platter spinning speed are most common for externals, 7200 RPM for internals or putting your own internal in an enclosure) and the interface - most external drives today support the USB 3 spec vs. the older and slower USB 2 but this is also determined by what speed your devices you connect it to support - physically they're compatible. In general if you're just depositing a large amount of files there as a data dump drive, even 5400 and USB 2 allow you to play directly from it.

Like not damage them in any way?

Most modern drives are decently reliable, but if you can find out the exact manufacturer's model number of that Seagate 4TB you can Google that for reviews (or Amazon reviews which might give you a sense of peoples' feelings about it and its reliability). I should also point out the general rule that "one copy of anything is not a backup", meaning if you're really attached to content and would find it inconvenient if lost, you should have it backed up on another item/medium - some people buy two drives of the same capacity and designate one for a regular backup. (Fancier external drive solutions employ RAID'ing with mirroring, in which you can recover if one drive dies, which honestly might be overkill for your porn files.)

And would it be compatible to play on a ps3 or ps4 to watch on big screen?

I don't know much about this myself but there are writings online (like here for the PS3 and here for the PS4 you might want to investigate further. Based on those I see the biggest issue being the disk system format of the drive (FAT32, NTFS, exFAT) and potentially the "codecs" or formats used in your clip. You might have more success with a standalone player you connect via HDMI or a desktop/laptop running something like VLCPlayer if it's close enough to your TV.

For models, I am liking this WD MyBook one (their "new", redesigned one) in the 8TB size. It's a bit of an investment but will last you a while for your storage needs.

You might want to "bounce" the files from your 1TB over to your new drive and use the 1TB for other things or "working" or "most viewed" files before you move them off to a 4TB or 8TB external.

Trinket's advice looks good to me. I have at least two backups of my important files, so storage is one of those things I'm willing to invest in. My only hard drive failure involved a Seagate; I usually use WD.

Edit: My Seagate HDD failure was an internal one.

Thank you so much for your help, I might get it today maybe, or take a look at your 8TB WD model, but I think I should be ok with 4TB for now.

By bounce, you mean transfer directly from external HDD to the new? Files should be fine doing that, right? Some movies are so hard to find a working download link. I use ************ mostly, not sure whats best if any.

Thank you again, really appreciate it, happy new year :v

Edit: download site may be banned here, apologies for that.

Yes, that's right - I just mean copying them over to your new drive when you've set it up, then deleting them from your old drive. A "move" operation. The files should be unharmed and just as the originals. You can repurpose the 1TB for other stuff or use it to back up your most essential files.

Good luck in your research and purchase!

Most of the external drives come with their own back up software?

Would you use the software that comes with it? Windows Back Up? Or a third party software?

Seagate is pretty bad as I've had a lot of them fail. Never had a Western Digital fail on me. I am still using my 256GB WD from 2003. That's how good they are.

Seagate bought Maxtor years ago and if you're unlucky, you're getting a "Seagate" from the "Maxtor" production place. A pity, as Seagate used to be high quality. Western Digital on the other hand used to be awful, but now they're pretty decent.

No matter what brand, always buy two hard drives and synchronize their content for backups. Better safe than sorry.
