I'd say it depends how are the opposites are. A bit differnet is usally fine, but extreme opposites, I don't really think that would lead to a lasting relationship.

As with any generalisation, it's only partly true.

But the other day, I was in hospital for a checkup and saw a tall skinny guy (a stubbly chav type) with a short fat (and not too attractive) woman with no neck.

I'd say that it's true in my case, but everybody's different. I'm attracted to guys who have opposite characteristics to me, it would be wrong to say that the saying "opposites attract" is always true.

Everybody is attracted to something different and for different reasons.

Psychologists say some guys like women who look like their mothers, narcissistic people might like people who look like them etc etc.

Opposites do attract to some extent. I wouldn't want to date someone that is very similar to me. It's boring that way. I also wouldn't want the polar opposite of me either, because then we would have nothing to talk about.

When we see a couple, what we NOTICE are the differences. If they're the same height, or both skinny, or both very happy much of the time, we simply won't notice. But if one is more attractive than the other, we focus entirely on that, and use that as "proof" that, indeed, "opposites attract".

Generally, no. In terms of long-term relationships, the ones that have too many differences working against the relationship, ultimately causing the demise of the relationship. I remember studying this a few years ago, but people tend to go with others who share similar:

1) cultures or subcultures
2) ethnicities
3) political affiliations
4) ethnicities
5) social status
6) class status
7) religions
8) worldviews
9) physical appearance

There were a few others, but I cannot remember them at the moment. Overall, people tend to choose mates, consciously or subconsciously, who are similar to themselves.

So what? What is your point? We can all find opposite characteristics in people who hook up with each other, but the similarities are far more important. These similarities include:

- They usually have the same level of income - few millionaires marry poor people.

- They usually have roughly the same degree of physical attractiveness - few beauty queens date ugly guys, and few pretty boys date ugly girls.

- They usually have the same political orientation - few liberals marry conservatives.

If you can't see that people who date and marry each other have far more similar characteristics than they have differences, then I'm sorry, but I can't help you.

Of course it is true sometimes. I know couples that belong to opposite political parties and both are involved politicalally, and have been married more than 20 years.
