Hey everyone. I'm having a problem with my DVD-RW drive. I'm just wondering if I can get some help from you folks.

So here's my problem. I bought a Maxell DVD+RW to burn some data into. When I tried to burn files into it, my driver won't recognize the blank disc. At first I thought it was just because it was a +RW disc so today I bought a Maxell DVD-RW. However, when I tried to burn some files into it, the driver still won't recognize the disc.

Now, I don't know the reason for this. It says on the little sticker in front of my computer that I have "DVD +/- RW Multi-format Double Layer". I thought that means the drive is capable of reading and writing on DVD +/- RW discs.

I also downloaded DISCinfo to find out for sure if my optical drive can read/write on DVD +/- RW and it said that it can. Here's a picture with all the info DISCinfo provided me:

After that, I downloaded the firmware needed to upgrade the optical drive and after installing it and restarting the computer, it still didn't work.

I was able to burn files on a CD-RW disc before so I guess it's just the DVD +/- RW my drive won't recognize.

So do any of you know what the problem is? Is it the drive itself that has a problem or is it just the Maxell brand doesn't work with my DVD drive?

I really don't know what to do. ](*,) Please help!

If you need information about my computer to help and fix my problem, please feel free to ask.

I have CyberLink DVD Solution that came with the computer when I bought it. I don't really know if it is a software problem since I was able to burn files on both DVD+/-RW blank discs on my sister's computer. However, she has ts-h552B Optical Drive so it's not the same as mine. And she also has Nero. After burning files into the discs, I tried to use it on my computer but it still wouldn't read both discs. That's how I figured my dvd-rw drive won't read blank DVD-RWs.

I'm also afraid to uninstall the driver since I don't know if I'm going to be able to install it again since I don't have a software for it. It came with the computer.

Well I tried to update the driver using firmware. It's really hard to find. After updating, nothing changed at all. So I guess the driver is pretty up to date.

I just finished installing my Nero program and used InfoTool and looked at all the information. Nero tells me that I should be able to read and write on DVD+/-RW discs but it still didn't work. It's just the DVD ReWritables that don't work though. Every other types of discs work fine.

I have only tried the Maxell brand, so maybe that's the problem. But it's seems very unlikely that it is. I'm gonna buy a different brand of DVD RW disc tomorrow and if it still doesn't work then I guess it's the drive that's defective.

I had a problem like this the other day and it was related to the the speed of the disk. I was using a high speed R/W disk in a low speed drive and it wouldn't recognise it. Worth checking anyway.

Ok so I uninstalled the drive and installed it again but nothing happened.

I think I have a high speed drive. The fastest I can burn is 48x and the RW discs I used are 2x and 4x. I don't actually know what I'm supposed to do.

Here are more information I got from DISC Info:

I don't know what else to do.

The DVD Burner is a Samsung regardless of the name it has on the case. They can be a real pain in the arse to use. I am yet to find anyone that is satisfied or managed to have any real success with them.

I have never found a CD or DVD ROM/Burner to read a blank disc either. Use the Software that came with the unit for the best results and check that the data and power cables are plugged tight and correctly. Check the disc after you have burnt it to see if it have work and try to burn you disc at the slowest speed. This will give you a deeper burn and may help making it easier to read.

My burner didnèt come with a software since it came with the computer when I bought it. Thatès why itès so hard for me to fix the damn thing.

Then check the website for the manufacturer and CD/DVD Burning Software. It will probably work best using something like Burn Now that comes with Windows XP I think. And if it doesn't then it would be downloadable from the Net. The program is very basic and wont do anything fancy.

I Also checked the support section and it only had a copy iof the manual and didn't have any software available but the manual said you MUST use only Samsung Software to write with or you may get writing errors. It is probably best that you e-mail samsung to find out what software they recommend you use.

Here's a simple solution i think will work for you.. try a different brand of blank disc. Some drives are just too damned picky.. And this sounds just like the case to me.
