Saturday evening should be fun. With hurricane winds and flooding rain possible I am already tired of winter and it's not even winter yet.

I have one lamp that I can wind up if I lose power, but I am screwed if I can't cook.

Make sure you have a manual can opener, canned milk cereal, and some other random items to carry you until power is restored. Batteries are probably already disappearing from the shelves.

Also, plan for cards or other distractions if unable to have electronic access.

I have no money to buy stuff. I will deal with it as best as I can.

There are trees down, and power out in a few places here in Van. Fifteen year old boy was killed by a falling tree. Died of his injuries in hospital.

Everyone in the affected areas, please be prepared and stay safe and warm. It's supposed to get worse here tomorrow (Saturday) evening. I'm out to get some bread and then will spend the night playing Pirate 101.

Take care.

Stay safe.

Take care of yourselves. I know what you will be going through.

The news yesterday said right now Oregon would be in the middle of it. Right now, not a damn thing. No rain or wind. My brother's family did lose power for a few hours, but that was before it was even suppose to get bad.

How much do weather people make? Can I get in on that?

They have a motive in promising excitement.

Because they know the market is essentially bored, and will respond.

I did witness a 2 x 40 foot strip of metal flashing peel off a nearby building and damage a car. But ultimately, I found last night's rains more thrilling.

It didn't take The Weather Channel long to figure out watching fair weather forecasts was about as galvanizing as watching paint dry.

So, they sexed it up, both literally and figuratively. Sexy women, jazzy graphics, and hype factors like "chill factor" and "heat index" were deployed.

And they added all the disaster coverage they could get.

Oh, and the heroic, handsome, strong young men who brave the beaches and winds to tell us there are storms a-blowin' out there. Right. They manage to take heroism for a cause and subtly inject it onto the screen with heroism to provide entertainment. Do you know how many emails, letters, and tweets they get with old folk worried about Rob or whoever else is out there leaning into the wind at 45 degree angles?

They should just be honest and rebrand it The Worry Channel.

I'd like to see them trying to stand in surf when an actual storm's coming.
If the sea's trashing seawalls, roads, wharves, shore front buildings and boats, I don't think a weather channel raincoat will help.

Thank God my power is on. I have 18 dozen stuffed cabbage in the freezer.
