Original X-Men member Iceman comes out as 'full gay'

X-Men's Iceman Comes Out As Gay!!!

He's now the most well known gay superhero. This is so awesome, they've had other gay X-men and super heroes before but they're characters no one (or at least me) cares about. They did a good job at explaining why he's been portrayed as straight until now and a good job working the gay thing in.

It's great that they picked one of the coolest X-men who has been around since the beginning, has some of the best powers, has one of the best personalities, and is arguably the best looking member on the team especially in the movies. This makes the scene with his family in X2 even better. I just hope they don't change his personality to be more stereotypical where he's just portrayed as a regular nice guy with no personality although that's sort of already the movie version of him. He should still be a cocky, mischievous jokester who likes to pull pranks and have fun. Either way, as a long time X-men fan, even if they do change his personality it's better than nothing. The issue comes out tomorrow.

Meh.

Comic book writers and sci-fi writers are goddamn cowards, all of them. They've tackled every human rights issue except gay rights. And now that it is clear that public opinion is finally going our way, they are finally very slowly introducing gay characters.

I'm not impressed at all.

More to the point. Where were the gay characters when I was growing up and hated myself for being gay?

Lead from behind is not at all impressive.

I'm not real impressed. Comic book company's nowadays reboot their universes every other few years trying on the latest shock value fad. Today he's gay. Next he'll be black... or female... then straight again... he'll die, then resurrected... made a villain, a clone, a robot, older, younger... like the Green Lantern of Earth 2, or Batwoman whom they also made gay, Iceman is a "B" list hero who is expendable.

I agree, but, at least kids reading this today have this, and I'd say that's a step in the right direction. :)

And I saw an article that it is not "THE" Iceman - it is an Iceman from an alternate time line.....

At this point they're all pretty much alternate time lines as it's - huge -. I'd disagree that it's the last minority to be represented as a main superhero, though. There's always at least three or four more waiting in the wings. I can think of at least three myself, and only one of those has non-discrimination laws, and of that only in a couple of states.

I dont mind he's gay ;)

Damn..a chunk of my childhood  I used to ran to arcade, few blocks from my home just to see him in action. Now I can see him from youtube all-the-time...

Next..I wish this sexy chrome bodied- "Silver Surfer" also come out as gay

The Fantastic Four were originally gay. Think about it. The leader, Elastic Man. Like he was a giant condom. The middle guy, the Human Torch (the original flamer). Then there was the Thing, a guy who goes rock hard around other guys (enough said there). And the only female of the group.......... (wait for it).......... the Invisible Woman (as if she didn't really matter).

I was lucky because I was growing up when Wiccan and hulking first made their appearance and it was a huge deal to see such positive superheroes who were also gay. It's really changed my life.

I'm sorry you didn't get to have that but at least this generation coming through now won't have to experience that now that they've got iceman as the lgbtiq young hero representing them.

Btw I'm dying to see how Northstar reacts to this

Okay....why the hell isn't it Wolverine? Having him be gay would be such an interesting turn of events.

This kinda proves my point... they never change the REAL characters - just the alternate universe/timeline/clone... versions of the heroes, whom in all likelihood their story arc is going to end in a couple months and they'll never be heard from again. To me it means practically nothing.

When I first read this thread title, I was really hoping it was talking about the actor who played Iceman, and that HE was coming out as gay or something. He has a twin brother... now THERE would be a HOT story. :D

You guys got it wrong, it's not an Iceman from an alternate universe. The storyline is that Hank(Beast) from present day brought the teen versions of the team from the past to help with the problem in the future. The teen Iceman is well aware of all the gay thoughts running around his head and teen Jean being in present time realizes that people in the future seem to not care about who's gay anymore so she confronts teen Iceman about why he catcalls girls and puts on a straight act when he's gay. The older Iceman has been repressing his gay thoughts and living in the closet all these years but now since the younger Iceman is going to go back to his time accepting himself, that will change how future Iceman is. So now in future comics, we can see the adult Iceman as a proud and openly gay man. It's the butterfly effect thing where if you change something in the past, it changes the future.

I don't think this is a short term stunt. It has been long speculated by fans that Iceman is gay and Marvel has been looking to expand its diversity for some time now and having one very well known gay character will do a lot for them. Featuring Northstar in new movies and TV shows won't attract a larger audience because very few people other than a few gay readers care about Northstar. Everybody loves and knows about Iceman. I can see them using gay Iceman in future reboots of movies, video games, and other forms of media. Also Iceman going back in the closet would probably be controversial for them.

The link posted above is missing a very important page where Iceman explains why the adult Iceman has been in the closet and Iceman admitting he's "Full Gay". View the last panel of this link to see it.

He didn't come out. The writers outed him. And I'm not in favor of outing. :)

Lex

This is of course simply just off topic, but I´ve been wondering about you Lex, why you sign you comment with that "Lex"-thing
